Jalen Brunson has 'the most confidence' at Knicks' ability to make a title run next season
On Saturday, the Indian Pacers picked up the Game 6 win in the Eastern Conference Finals, finishing off the New York Knicks' season and dashing any hopes of winning its first championship in 50 years. But despite the loss, Knicks guard Jalen Brunson feels strongly that this group can take it all the way next year. Postgame, Brunson was asked if he believed that this Knicks team could make a championship run next season. In his response, the guard was incredibly clear about his faith in the team. Advertisement "The most confidence. Overconfident. Seriously," he said. "There's not an ounce of any type of doubt that I'm not confident with this group." Brunson gave it everything he got, averaging 33 points and 33:50 minutes per game throughout the series against the Pacers. Throughout the playoffs as a whole, Brunson averaged 30.1 points, 3.5 rebounds, seven assists and 37:59 minutes per game. But the ECF loss was, on the whole, a disappointing ending for a Knicks team that had so much potential. New York made a number of key offseason moves to build a strong contender heading into the 2024-25 season. The team re-signed starting forward OG Anunoby, the second most expensive player on the team, to a new 5-year, $212.5 million extension in July. In September, the Knicks sent Julius Randle, a three-time All-Star, to the Minnesota Timberwolves, receiving veteran center Karl-Anthony Towns in return as part of a three-team trade. Advertisement While neither the Pacers or the Thunder had to pay the luxury tax this season, the Knicks did put a lot of money on the line. New York had the fourth-highest payroll in the league with $188,877,651, going more than $18 million over the tax threshhold. Towns was the most expensive player on the team, earning $49.2 million this season; Anunoby was the second most expensive, earning $36.6 million this year. Along with Mikal Bridges, the team's four star starters all had good seasons: Brunson lead the team, averaging 26 points per game, while Towns averaged a double-double. Anunoby and Bridges both averaged double-digit points, while putting up more than 36 minutes per game. Advertisement The Knicks finished third in the East with a 51-31 record, and got well-fought series wins over the Detroit Pistons and Boston Celtics in the postseason before falling to the Pacers. But in the end, it wasn't enough. New York will once again be watching the NBA Finals from home. Still, though, if you take Brunson's word for it: There's always next year.

OG Anunoby led the scoring with 24 points on 55.6% shooting, and Karl-Anthony Towns added 22 points and 14 rebounds. While both showed up offensively, their combined efforts weren't enough to close the gap, especially with the team struggling from deep, shooting just 28.1% from three. Jalen Brunson added only 19. Landry Shamet gave the bench a spark, knocking down four threes for 12 points. But beyond him, New York got little production from its second unit. The Knicks shot well overall at 47.7% from the field but left points on the line, hitting only 65.4% of their free throws. Costly turnovers, 17 total, and poor ball security made it tough to stay in the game. Knicks offseason outlook: New York's top-heavy roster could really use some support
It took the Knicks less than a year to acquire OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns. The mission was clear: Put significant talent around the scoring proficiency and playmaking acumen of point guard Jalen Brunson. Advertisement For the most part, it's worked. They wouldn't have made the Eastern Conference finals if it hadn't. Yet, in the process of gathering this All-Star team of starters, the Knicks relinquished depth — virtually all of it. That lack of depth ultimately put them at a disadvantage against the Pacers, who kept throwing bodies at the stretched-out Knicks and wore them down in six games. In the middle of it all stands Tom Thibodeau, the highly competent yet superbly stubborn head coach who played all of his starters more than 35 minutes per game in the regular season. (Before you ask, no he did not scale down those minutes in the playoffs. To the surprise of absolutely no one, he went in the opposite direction.) Advertisement As New York now heads into the offseason, it at least has its ducks in a row in regard to its collective talent level. The Knicks' best players are in place, and they are dangerous when applied accurately. What the organization needs now is a heightened focus on the bench and to identify role players who can help the starters get more rest and perhaps elevate them to a higher level in pursuit of a title. Knicks guard Jalen Brunson shoots over Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton during the first half of Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals in Indianapolis on Saturday, May 31, 2025. (AP Photo/Michael Conroy) (ASSOCIATED PRESS) 2024-25 finish Record: 51-31, third in the Eastern Conference. Lost to the Indiana Pacers in six games in the East finals. Highlight of the season The nine-game winning streak in December, when the Knicks played like a well-oiled machine. Some will argue they beat up on bad teams, but that's what they were supposed to do, and during that stretch it seemed near impossible for them to play down to the level of competition. Players signed for next season Karl-Anthony Towns OG Anunoby Jalen Brunson Mikal Bridges Josh Hart Mitchell Robinson Miles McBride Tyler Kolek Pacome Dadiet Key free agents Precious Achiuwa (UFA) Landry Shamet (UFA) Projected salary $194,354,847 Draft picks No. 50 Advertisement Draft focus: Look, at No. 50 it's hard to find someone to crack the rotation. But it's not impossible. If the Knicks target the best defender left on the board, that player stands a reasonable chance of endearing himself to Thibodeau, potentially leading to minutes. Due to New York's expensive roster, it doesn't have a lot of leeway financially. It could use the tax MLE, but that would hard-cap it, possibly preventing the Knicks from making additional moves. Needs and goals Obviously, the Knicks are looking to build on this season. They've fully embraced a win-now approach, and that's not changing anytime soon. If they succeed in adding some quality depth, they could be a powerhouse next season.

Nesmith continues to show up
Indiana takes a 3-1 series lead against New York behind a triple-double from Haliburton Getty Images Getty Images Aaron Nesmith played on a bad ankle, and Pacers outscored Knicks by 20 points in his 32:26 of on-court time. On the flip side, the Knicks were outscored by 20 points in Mitchell Robinson's 18:50. Getty Images A few key statistical categories were telling of tonight's outcome. Indiana outscored the Knicks on the fast break (22-9), in bench scoring (36-21), and points off turnovers (20-9). New York also had 17 turnovers compared to just 11 for Indiana and the Pacers had 29 assists compared to the Knicks 17. Getty Images Karl-Anthony Towns was assertive on the offensive end. He dominated his matchup with Myles Turner and finished with 24 points and 12 rebounds. But the Knicks' defense continued to struggle with Towns in the game, and it resulted in a 130-point offensive performance led by one of the most impressive triple-doubles in NBA playoff history courtesy of Tyrese Haliburton. Now, Towns' first season in New York is on the verge of ending in Game 5 at Madison Square Garden. Imagn Images While it wasn't OG Anunoby's most efficient game shooting the basketball, he still put together a strong performance despite the Knicks' loss in Game 4. He scored 22 points on 7-16 shooting, including going just 1-7 from deep. Anunoby got to the line nine times, making seven, while adding two blocks and three steals. Imagn Images After scoring 11 points total in an overall struggle during the first three games of this series, Bennedict Mathurin stepped up for Indiana in Game 4. He scored 20 points in 12 minutes off the bench, shooting 5-8 from the field and getting to the foul line 11 times, where he made 10 free throws. Getty Images Coming into today, we weren't sure Aaron Nesmith would play tonight after suffering an ankle sprain during the Knicks' comeback late in Game 3. But the stalwart Pacers forward not only started, he was a game-high +20 in 32 minutes of a game Indiana won by nine. Though Jalen Brunson still had 31 points, most of those came with Nesmith — his primary defender — either switched off him or out of the game entirely. Nesmith also scored 16 points, most of any Pacers starter not named Tyrese Haliburton or Pascal Siakam, to help secure the crucial Game 4 win. Getty Images After being moved to the bench prior to Game 3, Josh Hart still somehow played 35:59 minutes tonight in the Knicks loss. He scored 12 points on 3-5 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds but also fouled out in the fourth quarter and had five turnovers. Getty Images Limit Tyrese Haliburton's performance to "only" a 30-point triple-double with zero turnovers — and it's only been done once before in NBA history, regular or postseason (Baron Davis in 2002). Whittle it down further to a 30-point, 10-assist game with zero turnovers, and it had only been done five times before tonight in NBA history. Jalen Brunson got off to a hot start for the Knicks, scoring 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting in the first half. From that point on, he attempted just 10 more shots, finishing with 31 points on 9-of-19 shooting. In the fourth quarter, Brunson uncharacteristically attempted just three shots and his lone make came in the final moments when this game was already decided. Brunson's counting stats at the end of this series will likely look gaudy but it's fair to say this has not been his best series. Games of 30+ points, 15+ assists, ZERO turnovers in the NBA regular season and postseason... Tyrese Haliburton: 3 (including tonight, first ever in NBA postseason history) Everyone else since 2020: 2 (James Harden, Nikola Jokić) Everyone before Tyrese Haliburton: 3 (LeBron James, Chris Paul, John Stockton) Getty Images It'll be overshadowed, and rightfully so, by Tyrese Haliburton's spectacular 32-point triple-double. But Pascal Siakam also torched the Knicks once again in this series, to the tune of 30 points including an efficient 3-for-4 mark from 3-point range. It's worth noting that this is the same Pascal Siakam who was a very effective No. 2 to Kawhi Leonard on the 2019 Raptors team that won the NBA Finals and that, by Draymond Green's own admission a few days ago, dominated a still-in-his-prime Green in that series. Siakam is averaging 26.0 points per game in this series. Getty Images Regardless of the outcomes of both conference finals, Game 1 of the NBA Finals is on June 5th by the way so set your calendars accordingly. Imagn Images Tyrese Haliburton clearly loves taking the mantle from Reggie Miller as the maize-and-blue clad villain at Madison Square Garden, and he's excited about the chance to eliminate the Knicks on their home court in Thursday's Game 5. "It's gonna be a lot of fun," Haliburton told TNT. "It's a tough environment to play in. So we gotta be ready." Before Eastern Conference Finals: Pacers had two games all year where they had 2 players drop 30+ points in the same game (one of them against the KNICKS in November) Now, it's happened in two games of this Eastern Conference finals: Game 1: Haliburton/Nesmith Haliburton/Nesmith Game 4: Haliburton/Siakam Tyrese Haliburton's incredible stat line, because it bears repeating... 32 points, 12 rebounds and 15 assists. Oh, and four steals as well. "Just trying to be aggressive," Haliburton told TNT. "Trying to respond, I felt like I let the team down in Game 3 so it was important to come out here and just make plays. Guys just put me in position to make plays, and man, it's a big win for us." Did John Haliburton's return to Gainbridge Fieldhouse have anything to do with his son's performance? "Hell yeah," Tyrese said. "I'm glad pops is in the building, man. Makes it that much more sweet. Had a little bit to do with it." Imagn Images If Oklahoma City vs. Indiana doesn't get you excited, you should pick a different sport to watch. They've been the two best teams in this postseason. It's the best offense in the playoffs vs. the best defense in the playoffs. We just saw back-to-back legacy games from two rising stars in these NBA playoffs. Last night, it was Shai Gilgeous-Alexander going for 40 to lead Oklahoma City to a road win. Tonight, it's Tyrese Haliburton becoming the third player ever to score at least 30 points, grab at least 10 rebounds and notch at least 15 assists. I can understand if 'Oklahoma City vs. Indiana' as an NBA Finals matchup — if we get it — doesn't get you excited. But 'SGA vs. Tyrese?' That excites me. GO FURTHER How Tyrese Haliburton rediscovered his basketball joy: 'I was struggling to look at myself' Imagn Images If the Pacers make the Finals, and they are favorites to do now that they have a 3-1 lead in this series, the Tyrese Haliburton trade truly goes down as one of the most consequential trades in recent NBA history. Finals teams in the last 25 years that have acquired their best player by trade: 2002-03 Nets (Jason Kidd), 2008/10 Celtics (Kevin Garnett) 2019 Raptors (Kawhi Leonard) These have also led to a title run: 2021 Suns (Chris Paul), 2015-18 Cavaliers (Kevin Love), and the 2004-05 Pistons (Richard Hamilton, Ben Wallace and Rasheed Wallace). No, we're not counting sign-and-trades. Of course, we might soon add the Thunder (Shai Gilgeous-Alexander) to this list, too. This is the first time in New York Knicks franchise history that they have lost multiple games in the same postseason despite scoring at least 120 points. It's happened twice in these Eastern Conference finals against the Indiana Pacers.
