Chery brand to launch in the UK this summer

China-based Chery International (Chery) has confirmed that it will be entering the UK new car market under its own brand this summer. Chery UK will initially launch with two SUVs, both 'optimised for the local market in specification and pricing'. They will be on sale in the coming months through a UK-wide dealer network, the company said. Chery already sells cars in the UK under the OMODA and JAECOO brands. By June [2025], the two marques had achieved a combined market share of 2%. UK CEO Gary Lan, who leads both OMODA&JAECOO UK and now Chery UK, commented: 'Chery's introduction to the UK market this summer not only shows Chery's commitment to growth, but also reflects our confidence in the UK automotive sector, and the appeal of our vehicles to local buyers. Expect the same innovation, style, technology focus, and exceptional value.' Chery UK Country Director, Farrell Hsu, said: 'The Chery brand is recognised globally as a trusted choice for families, fleets, and anyone who values cabin space, long range, and quality at a cost-effective price. We've been working behind the scenes, learning from our experience with other Chery International-derived brands in the UK, and have taken this time to refine and refresh our approach to this important market. We look forward to sharing more details on Chery's UK introduction soon.' Chery said the UK go-to-market strategy features 'UK-optimised Chery models and combines traditional franchise dealerships with a strong emphasis on warranty and aftermarket care. Many of these dealerships already represent OMODA&JAECOO in the UK.' The first model from Chery UK will be unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed later this week in the First Glance paddock. "Chery brand to launch in the UK this summer" was originally created and published by Just Auto, a GlobalData owned brand. Video: What you missed at the Durban July — Ezokhetho's chicken-feet chic, luxury cars and Mzansi celebs

As the horses thundered down the track at the Hollywoodbets Durban July, it wasn't just the race that had hearts racing; it was the fashion. This year, Johannesburg-based label Ezokhetho, helmed by the visionary Mpumi Dhlamini, reminded the country why local fashion deserves a place on the global stage. Drawing deep inspiration from the golden age of Sophiatown, Ezokhetho's pieces told stories far beyond fabric. With bold prints, structured silhouettes, and the now-iconic chicken feet motif, the label turned heads and sparked conversations. 'You are your billboard,' says Mpumi. 'Your clothing speaks before you do.' Reimagining Sophiatown Founded in 2017 and headquartered in Victoria Yards, Ezokhetho was born from a desire to honour the spirit of Sophiatown, an era where fashion was a form of protest, and style was a stand. Dhlamini's label revives that spirit for a new generation of wearers who see clothes not just as garments but as vessels of meaning. 'The table' is Ezokhetho's philosophy: a place where everyone is invited to be seen, heard, and styled. It's fashion with a cause, authentic, confrontational, and unapologetically South African. This year's theme, 'Marvelling at the Marvels of Mzansi,' dovetails perfectly with Ezokhetho's ethos. Mpumi's tips for race-day dressing or any other fashion-focused event are not just about standing out, but standing firm in your identity: Prints as memory: From classic florals to striking geometrics, Ezokhetho's prints archive lived experiences. Silhouettes with purpose: Think strong tailoring and deliberate shapes that speak of dignity and presence. Symbols that spark dialogue: The chicken feet motif, a uniquely local and nostalgic reference, appears on everything from streetwear to formal wear. Ageless style: 'Style has no expiry date,' says Mpumi. Whether worn by a Gen Z trendsetter or a stylish elder, Ezokhetho pieces radiate a timeless edge. A legacy on the runway More than just a fashion house, Ezokhetho utilises its runway moments to highlight pressing social issues, such as gender-based violence, poverty, and inequality. Garments feature handwritten notes, illustrations, and messages that demand attention. 'We're not just here for applause,' says Dhlamini. 'We want people to reflect.' Wear the story For Mpumi Dhlamini, fashion is not just about the fit or the flair; it's about the feeling. 'Dress up, yes. But ask yourself, what story are you telling?' Mpumi asks.

Attendees from all walks of life arrived dressed in their finest, setting the tone for a day packed with glamour. Celebrities reigned supreme on the grounds, showcasing a breathtaking array of haute couture that left onlookers in awe. Bright colours, intricate designs and striking accessories were the order of the day, with many men and women turning the racecourse into a catwalk of elegance and style. Celebrities like Carol Ofori, Jessica Nkosi and Boity Thulo came prepared for this prestigious event. Ofori, who was dressed by Sibu Msimang, noted: " The Proteas have just won a test championship, so we are celebrating the marvels that are The Proteas. They have made history, so why not?" When asked what the HDJ means to her, she said: "It's a fun day, socialising, eating, drinking day and seeing people I haven't seen in a very long time. And betting on some horses and making some money." The radio personality said she was excited to see Somizi, noting: "I saw Somgaga arriving in a gorgeous dress. I believe there is a performance later on. I'm looking forward to that." Jessica Nkosi at the Hollywoodbets Champions Suite. Her outfit is inspired by our national flower, the protea. Image: Supplied When it came to fashion, Nkosi didn't miss a beat in sticking to the theme. As a "Marvel of Mzansi", her dress was inspired by South Africa's national flower, the Protea. As a Hollywoodbets influencer, she said the HDJ is a beautiful space with different people with different interests come together. 'If you love fashion, you can come. If you love sports you can come. If you love horses, music and food, you can come,' she said. She noted that what made this year's event different was an increase in interest and excitement in the event. Thulo, also inspired by the Protea flower, revealed that when it comes to the HDJ, comfort is a priority for her. Wearing a glittering short dress by Otiz Seflo, she noted: "When you come to the Durban July, there is a lot of walking around so for me comfort comes first. I want to be able to move comfortably. And also, it's a long evening so you don't want to be feeling overwhelmed." The HDJ has become synonymous with flamboyant fashion, but this year it elevated the bar even higher. Notably, the marquee setups added a chic layer to the event, with beautifully designed spaces that provided a refuge from the sun. Guests mingled in lavish settings adorned with floral displays and comfortable seating, indulging in gourmet catering as they prepared for the thrilling races. Mduduzi Mkhize, the project coordinator of the Executive Concerts Marquee, a marquee that's making its debut this year, said: "We felt like we needed to also showcase another side of what Durban is. "The city is vast, and it's different. We wanted to bring in a little bit of culture and bring in a little Zulu-ness and a little bit of sassiness. We wanted to show people how luxury and culture can mix." As the horses thundered down the track, the cheers from the crowd echoed throughout the racecourse. The day featured not only thrilling races but also live entertainment that kept the spirit high. With music pumping and laughter ringing out, attendees were drawn into a festive atmosphere that celebrated both the sport and the social fabric of Mzansi. In essence, this year's event reaffirmed its status as a pinnacle event in the South African calendar, blending the thrill of horse racing with the flair of fashion. It is an experience that celebrates community, sport and style in equal measure, leaving a lasting impression that attendees will carry into the years to come.
