Impaired driving in Muskoka nearly doubled this spring: OPP

Bracebridge OPP are reporting that they charged three more allegedly impaired drivers to close out May, bringing their month's total to almost double their amount of May 2024. The first incident, according to the detachment, was on Friday at around 9 p.m., when officers responded to a disturbance call on Ann Street in Bracebridge. Police say their investigation led to the arrest of a 43-year-old Bracebridge man. He was charged with impaired operation, impaired operation with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding 80 milligrams per 100 millilitres (over 80), and operation while prohibited. Bracebridge OPP report that the second incident happened nearly two hours later at around 10:40 p.m., when officers received a call about concerning driving on Highway 11 north in Gravenhurst. Police say the officers located and stopped the suspect vehicle near Cedar Lane in Bracebridge. The driver, a 66-year-old Huntsville woman, was charged with impaired operation and over 80. The busy overnight continued, as Bracebridge OPP say the third incident happened Saturday at around 12:20 a.m. in the Port Carling area of Muskoka Lakes Township. Police say a patrolling officer on Muskoka Road 118 stopped a vehicle that was driving in a concerning manner. The driver, a 43-year-old Oakville man, was charged with impaired operation and over 80. All three accused drivers are scheduled for court dates in Bracebridge this summer to answer to their charges. According to Bracebridge OPP, their officers charged a total of 20 allegedly impaired drivers in May. 'Impaired driving continues to be a significant factor impacting the safety of Muskoka roads,' repeated a Bracebridge OPP media officer in a news release. 'If you are concerned that someone is driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, please call 911 to notify police.'

SIU investigating alleged assault in Orillia

(File) A man is facing a slew of charges after an alleged assault incident in Orillia Saturday that is being investigated by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU). According to Orillia OPP, officers responded to the Colborne Street East area after receiving reports of assault and property damage. The officers arrested a suspect at the scene and charged him with common nuisance – endanger life, six counts of mischief, public intoxication and failing to leave premises when directed. Police say he was brought back to the Orillia OPP detachment where he was lodged in cells and held for a bail hearing, adding that he was later hospitalized for an injury. The SIU invoked their mandate to investigate after being notified by provincial police.

Locals help police stop two allegedly impaired drivers in Muskoka
Provincial police report that two allegedly impaired drivers were arrested and charged in the Bracebridge area over the past week thanks to tips from the public. According to Bracebridge OPP, the first incident happened last Friday at around 3 p.m., when officers received concerning reports from a southbound driver on Highway 11 about the behaviour of another vehicle. Police say officers later caught the suspect vehicle and arrested the driver. The 34-year-old Barrie woman was charged with operation while impaired, operation with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding 80 milligrams per 100 millilitres (over 80), and operation while prohibited. The next day at around 7 p.m., Bracebridge OPP reports that they received another complaint from a Highway 11 driver, this time, one who was heading north. Police say officers found and stopped a suspect vehicle shortly thereafter while it was travelling south on Highway 11. The driver, a 38-year-old Bracebridge woman, was arrested and charged with operation while impaired, over 80, and dangerous driving. Both accused drivers are scheduled for Bracebridge court dates in June to answer to their charges. Pedestrian seriously injured in cottage country collision
Provincial police are investigating what they are deeming a 'serious' crash in Fenelon Falls Friday morning between a vehicle and a pedestrian. According to City of Kawartha Lakes OPP, emergency crews responded to the incident at around 10:30 a.m. on Lindsay Street near Green Road. Police say a vehicle that was travelling north on Lindsay Street struck a pedestrian while they were crossing the street, later confirming that the pedestrian suffered serious injuries. The area was closed to allow for investigators to work on the scene. Police are asking anyone with additional footage or information that may assist the ongoing investigation to contact City of Kawartha Lakes OPP.
