Trinetra Haldar Exclusive: "Someone Told Me They Don't See Me As A Woman, But A Transwoman. So..."
Trinetra Haldar rose to fame with her acting debut in the Amazon Prime Original Made In Heaven Season 2 (2023). She is one of India's first transwomen to digitally document her medico-socio-legal transition from male to female. After two years of her debut, she is back on OTT with her new show Kankhajura. The show drops on SonyLIV today. In an exclusive interview with NDTV, Trinetra talks about how life has been after Made In Heaven 2, her thoughts on actors undergoing surgeries, and her "life has come full circle" moment with Roshan Mathew. In the series Kankhajura, Trinetra Haldar plays a transwoman, Aimee. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sony LIV (@sonylivindia) We ask if all the roles she has been offered so far are that of a transwoman, or have other roles too come her way. Trinetra says, "I am not committed to playing only trans characters on screen. I am an actor. I want to tell stories. Period." Talking about the process of getting diverse roles, Trinetra tells NDTV, "I am not successful enough to be offered parts readily. I have given auditions so far. But I take my auditions very seriously. I am very proud to say that people in the industry are opening up to the idea of casting more trans people. Honestly, characters are beyond genders. We are not mere males and females. The joy of being an actor lies in telling stories; stories about rich and layered lives." Trinetra is ready to take up roles beyond trans characters. Does the industry show the same zeal? The actor lets us in on the most awkward comment she has received on that front. "A person recently said, 'I don't see you as a woman, but as a trans woman. I feel you'll only play trans parts in your entire life," says Trinetra, without revealing whether the person is a director, actor or producer. Trinetra's Transition vs Actors' Cosmetic Surgeries In 2024, when there was a strong buzz over Rajkummar Rao's facial transformation, Trinetra shared a post on Instagram. An excerpt from the post read, "An actor was recently trolled into sheepishly admitting he had chin filler, and a topper was trolled for (not doing anything about) her facial hair in the face of obvious academic merit. Screwed if you do, screwed if you don't, clearly. There is only this one body, this one life. If there is gender dysphoria, it has to be dealt with." We ask what her thoughts are on actors like Khushi Kapoor or Shruti Haasan, who have openly talked about their cosmetic surgeries. "I can't speak for other people. For me, as a transwoman, the journey is very unique. Everything I have undergone in my personal medical journey has been related to my transition," says Trinetra. "I haven't done anything just because a casting director asked me to do it. I have never taken any step in my personal life or transition for this career. It, my transition journey, was always for my self. "My transition was to align my gender identity with my body. Because, unfortunately, I was not blessed with womanhood when I was born. I had to create it from the scratch. "I feel it's people's choice if they want to talk about their transformations or not. I have always been transparent about my journey," sums up Trinetra. Trinetra's Moment With Roshan Mathew In the series Kankhajura, Trinetra plays Roshan Mathew's love interest. Trinetra, who's a great admirer of Roshan's work, right from her medicine days, tells NDTV, "I watched his film Moothon (2020) when I was studying medicine. My Made In Heaven co-stars Shashank Arora and Sobhita Dhulipala were also a part of that film. So, it's like a life-has-come-full-circle moment for me. In that film, Roshan plays a queer character. He said so much through his eyes. He brings a lot of energy to the sets." Trinetra also shared a funny Instagram reel recently, where she is seen learning Malayalam from Roshan. "I love to learn language. So, I kept on asking him what this word would be called in Malayalam," smiles Trinetra. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Trinetra Haldar Gummaraju (@trinetra) Trinetra's new show, Kankhajura, is directed by Chandan Arora and produced by Ajay Rai. It also stars Roshan Mathew, Mohit Raina and Sarah Jane Dias in lead roles. The series is an official adaptation of the Israeli series, Magpie.

Actor Yogendra Tiku appeals for slashing movie theatre ticket prices
By Palash Srivastava New Delhi [India], May 30 (ANI): Veteran actor Yogendra Tiku, known for his suppporting roles in movies like 'Neerja', 'Fan', Queen' and 'Dabangg 2' has urged the government to reduce the theatre ticket prices so that more cinemagoers can watch in theatres. Actor Yogendra Tiku will be next seen in the film 'His Story of Itihaas' which features the battle of a Physics teacher against the inaccuracies present in the history textbooks. On the sidelines of preview of the film in the national capital on Tuesday, veteran actor Tiku shared his views on the ongoing debate between OTT and theatrical films releases in India. The actor believes that theatres are responsible for the film business in India but OTT has helped in producing more opportunities for the younger generation of actors. Speaking to ANI, the actor said, 'Certainly if there is a film business, then it is because of theatres. There is no doubt about it. OTT has its own charm. The biggest advantage of that is that there are a lot of artists who don't get a place because there is a set trend of the film industry that this should be like this, this face should be like this, this should be like this, this much following should be there. There are a lot of things set there which are not on OTT. So many people, many children get a chance to work on OTT.' The actor urged the Indian government to reduce tickets prices and make other facilities 'affordable' in the theatres so that the general audience can visit the film theatres in large numbers. 'I would say that these film theatres, they should not die. The public should come. But, the tickets have become so expensive, so the government should also do something. The food items, they should also do something. So, it should be so affordable that a normal person can come with his family and watch. Otherwise, slowly the film industry will end, the theatres will end, then it will become difficult,' said Tiku. The 'Neerja' actor also predicts that Bollywood would be going through a big change soon which will consists of good stories, script, talent and music. He also criticised the trend of producing 'remix' versions of songs in Bollywood. 'I feel that very soon, a change will come in Bollywood. This is what I feel, my personal feeling. A very good change is going to come, where they will again start focussing on good stories, good script, good talent, and good music. Because, music is also getting lost, slowly. Every other day, a new remix comes. Every other day, something happens. So, I don't want that either. I feel that a change will come very soon in Bollywood,' said Yogendra Tiku. Actress Akanksha Pandey, who is set to debut in the lead role in the film shared her affinity for taking challenges and reading books to distract herself from social media. On being asked about her inspiration for choosing such a challenging script for her debut movie, the actress said, 'I think, challenging topics excite me. And, I couldn't get a more challenging topic. So, I think, when I heard about this, I felt, that there are very few people who are ready to do this.' The actress also shared her love for books. 'Whenever I feel that there is a lot of social media, because of, like, we are actors, we have to use it. So, I take the support of books, and I get detoxed.' The director of 'His Story of Itihaas', Manpreet Singh Dhami, shared his views on the standards of Hollywood and Bollywood films. He believes that India has a potential to outscore Hollywood if the directors receives support from the film industry. The director said, 'To be honest, Hollywood is not that special anymore. I think their stories have been stale. Very few movies come from there. You see, and it's mathematical. We have a diverse culture, matematically, a lot of amount of stories can emerge from here. It is just that a system of support is created for a good movie then it will happen. You see, our movies, I am not saying because I am an Indian, will be better than Hollywood. And some movies like Malayalam and South Asian movies. Good movies It's not like that. It's just that there is no support. Sometimes, a good director is left behind without support. I was just lucky that I had the courage to do it. But there is no shortage of talent. And Hollywood is not that good anymore. Yes, they were a benchmark at one point of time. I don't think so anymore.' 'His Story of Itihaas' has released in the theatres today. Directed by Manpreet Singh Dhami, the film stars Subodh Bhave, Akanksha Pandey and Yogendra Tiku in the lead roles. The trailer of the film highlights cinematic inquiry into how deeply textbooks and taught narratives influence generations. The story follows Namit, a mild-mannered physics teacher whose life takes an unexpected turn when he stumbles upon blatant inaccuracies and ideological biases in his young daughter's history textbook. What begins as a concerned father's frustration soon transforms into an obsession with truth, sending him on a risky journey through India's bureaucratic maze, academic gatekeeping, and political interference, according to a press note shared by the makers. Saiyaara teaser: Newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda star in a signature Mohit Suri violent love story. Watch
Yash Raj Films have just released Saiyaara teaser that introduces two newcomers to the industry and the audiences. Although Aneet Padda has already featured in the OTT film Salaam Venky, it will be Ahaan Panday's first visit to the big dance. Nephew of industry veteran Chunky Panday and brother of the new generation star Ananya Panday, the newcomer will be aiming to hit the ground running and build upon his family's position in Bollywood. The film has been directed by Mohit Suri, and while the first look can be deceiving, it has the same vibe as one of his earlier films, Aashiqui 2. The teaser opens up with piano playing in the background and Padda's character reciting a poem, definitely not something new for a Yash Raj Studios film. We get a glimpse into the lives and personalities of our main characters, as Ahaan rides through the city on a bike while smoking a cigarette, and Padda just seems to be in awe of him in other frames. Our male protagonist is introduced with shirtless scenes and intense guitar playing. ALSO READ: Ananya Panday's cousin Ahaan was transported to hospital in a thermocol box after being born 42 days premature: 'It's a filmy story' Padda continues her recitation in the background, as several continuous shots give a sneak peek into what the entire movie is going to be about: music, riding a bike, a dollop of violence and a pinch of actual story. What's concerning is that a film, which seems to have music in an integral position, has almost 8 people working on the album, which opens up a very real possibility of 'too many chefs'. The teaser ends with a shot of Padda's character screaming. Ahaan's sister Ananya seems to have found a sense of direction in the industry, choosing smart roles for herself and delivering on them. Even she took her time to settle in, and her debut in Student of the Year 2 was definitely not the best start. She has since done roles in films like Kho Gaye Hum Kahan (2023) and Kesari Chapter 2 (2025), for which she received appreciation. Backed by Aditya Chopra and Akshaye Widhani, the film is set to release on July 18.
