Adorable Corgi on euthanasia list desperate for second chance after owner dies

Rufus, a 10-year-old Corgi, was taken in by Oakwood Dog Rescue after his owner was hospitalised and was put on an euthanasia list as there was no one to take him in He is mourning the loss of his owner and desperately needs a new home to shower him with love. Rufus, a 10 year old Corgi, was taken in by Oakwood Dog Rescue in Hull after his elderly owner was hospitalised and tragically didn't make it out. ‌ The woman, in her 70s, had been Rufus's companion since he was a pup, considering him her best friend. A statement from the rescue centre reads: "We don't normally advertise dogs that are not already in our care however, this handsome boy is Rufus, he is 10 years old and we need to advertise him asap as we don't believe that he is going to cope very well in a kennel environment. ‌ "He was very much loved and well cared for but unfortunately, the lady recently went into hospital and very sadly didn't make it out. ‌ "There was no one in place to take Rufus in the event of his mum no longer being around to care for him." The charity highlights that it's not unusual for pets to face dire circumstances when their owners pass away before them, as not everyone has a family member who can take them in. The statement continues: "Unfortunately, the reality is that we hear the same story on a weekly basis and many of these dogs lose their life because there is no one available to take them in. ‌ "Rufus almost had the same ending as he was booked in for euthanasia before we offered him a safe space with us." Rufus requires a peaceful home as he has only ever lived with one person and wouldn't be comfortable in a bustling family household. ‌ "We could look at rehoming him with older, sensible children 14+ based on the right match," the statement adds. "No dogs - although Rufus is none reactive on lead walks, he prefers not to be in the company of other dogs. No cats." Rufus, who is available for adoption for £50, is fully vaccinated and will be neutered before adoption. ‌ Commenting on his rehoming post on Facebook, one user said: "I didn't realise they still put dogs to sleep." Another user added: "I would offer him a home in a heartbeat if it would be considered to live with other dogs. I'm also a behaviourist." A third user said: "Could you maybe contact the Corgi's breeders they could help or Corgi breed rescue often have waiting lists for people wanting an older dog." If you're interested in rehoming Rufus, complete an application form or email adoptions@oakwooddogrescue. with any enquiries.

Dog so scared of humans he freezes up – but he just needs chance at happiness

Poor Prince is so scared of humans he freezes up when somebody comes close to him - but all he needs is the right person to teach him love and kindness Prince, a one year old mix-breed, is so terrified of humans that he freezes up when someone approaches him, after being born into a world of horror in a Romanian kill shelter. 'Kill shelters' refer to shelters where animals, particularly stray dogs, are euthanized after a certain period of time - as short as two weeks - if they are not adopted or rescued. ‌ "Timid soul" Prince was "shut down and just too scared to do anything" until the poor pup was taken in by Oakwood Dog Rescue in Hull, where rescuers stepped in to give him a second chance at life. ‌ A statement from the rescue centre reads: "If the shelter volunteers needed to do anything with him, they said he'd just completely freeze, let them do what they needed, and then run off back to a cold corner of the concrete pen he was living in, and try and make himself small and invisible." While Prince isn't quite ready to accept strokes yet, he is starting to learn not every human is a threat and is close to accepting a gentle touch from someone he trusts. The statement continues: "Without another dog around, Prince turns into a quivering wreck. Prince must be rehomed with at least one other dog already in the home for confidence. "Although Prince can not cope without another dog, he can be surprisingly gobby when he first meets them. Once he knows he is safe though and that they want to be his friend, he falls in love with them and they absolutely light up his life." The adorable pooch is able to live alongside sensible children over 12 years old. He lacks any previous training and requires a dedicated owner to teach him the basic commands. ‌ Although unaccustomed to a lead and lacking experience living indoors, the rescue centre is confident that he will swiftly adjust to home life. On Facebook, touching comments have been made regarding his rehoming posts, with one user saying: "Bless his hairy little socks." ‌ Emotions continued to run high as another remarked: "Millions of hugs, sweetheart." A sentiment echoed by another, who added: "Bless him, hope he finds his forever home." Oakwood Dog Rescue, established in 2009, dedicates itself to placing ex-street dogs from both the UK and abroad into loving homes. With a philosophy aimed at creating perfect lifelong matches rather than quick adoptions, the organisation asserts: "We do not operate on finding homes as fast as possible, instead we match our dogs to the best homes we can to ensure they stay in the home they have found." For those interested in giving Prince or other animals at Oakwood Dog Rescue a new start in life, enquiries should be directed to their team via the website
