What's next for DOGE after Elon Musk's departure? 'Only just begun'
Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk bid farewell to the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in a Wednesday night X post, ending his tenure as the face of the agency as it shifts to a new phase in President Donald Trump's second term. "As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending," Musk said on X. "The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government." Musk has been the public face of DOGE since Trump signed an executive order establishing the office on Jan. 20. DOGE has since ripped through federal government agencies in a quest to identify and end government overspending, corruption and fraud. After Musk's departure, a senior White House official told Fox News Digital that DOGE will operate as it has always operated and that the agency is "part of the DNA of this federal government." Obama-nominated Judge Allows Lawsuit Targeting Musk's Role With Doge To Proceed, Drops Claims Against Trump The official added that DOGE now operates in "nearly every federal government agency department" with the "sole job" of cutting waste, fraud and abuse with the goal of efficiency. In a post on X, White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller said, "The work DOGE has done to eliminate government waste and corruption — the rot embedded deep within Washington — is among the most valuable services ever rendered to government. And the work has only just begun." While Musk has been the public face of DOGE for months, he was not an employee of the United States DOGE Service and did not report to the acting DOGE administrator, Amy Gleason, according to a court filing in March that shed additional light on the internal workings of the office. The group itself will be dissolved on July 4, 2026, according to Trump's executive order. Musk's tenure with DOGE resulted in an estimated $175 billion in savings through a combination of asset sales, contract cancellations, fraud payment deletion and other cost-cutting measures, according to the agency's website, which was last updated on May 26. The savings amount to $1,086.96 per taxpayer, according to the website. Amid Musk's work with DOGE, Democrats and activists have staged protests against the tech billionaire and his companies, including working to tank Tesla stocks. Obama-nominated judge allows lawsuit targeting Musk's role with DOGE to proceed, drops claims against Trump
An Obama-appointed federal judge has largely rejected the Trump administration's request for the dismissal of a DOGE-related legal challenge, though she did dismiss President Donald Trump as a defendant, while otherwise allowing the wranglings to proceed. "Defendants seek to dismiss President Trump as a defendant because the court may not enjoin the President in the performance of his official duties," a memorandum opinion notes, adding, "The court agrees." The memorandum opinion and order are signed by Judge Tanya S. Chutkan of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. "This Court should restore constitutional order and, consistent with the Appointments Clause, enjoin Mr. Musk from issuing orders to any person in the Executive Branch outside of DOGE and otherwise engaging in the actions of an officer of the United States, and declare that his actions to date are ultra vires and of no legal effect," the complaint filed in February declared. "The federal bureaucracy situation is much worse than I realized," he noted on Tuesday, according to the Washington Post. Attorney General Pam Bondi warned illegal immigrant criminals to start packing their bags after the Supreme Court cleared the way for the Trump administration to resume deportation flights under the Alien and Enemies Act after an Obama-nominated judge tried to block it – handing a major boost to the president's crackdown on illegal immigration. "Americans are safer [because of this ruling], and domestic terrorists, foreign terrorists, you'd better look out because we're coming after you. I'd start self-deporting if I were you, because we are going to find you," she told "Fox & Friends" on Tuesday. Justices on the high court ruled 5-4 to grant the Trump administration's request to vacate a lower court's ruling barring the use of the Alien Enemies Act, a 1798 wartime immigration law, to immediately deport Venezuelan nationals – including alleged members of the Tren de Aragua gang. These terrorists… they are alien enemies to our country, and we will continue to deport them. We are going to keep America safe, and a liberal district judge is not going to stop us." The Obama-nominated judge has also been presiding over a lawsuit challenging Trump's invocation of the Alien Enemies act for authority to deport Venezuelan members of Tren de Aragua, which the U.S. has designated as a foreign terrorist organization. "How disgraceful is it that 'Judge' James Boasberg has just been given a fourth 'Trump Case,' something which is, statistically, IMPOSSIBLE. There is no way for a Republican, especially a TRUMP REPUBLICAN, to win before him. He is Highly Conflicted, not only in his hatred of me — Massive Trump Derangement Syndrome! — but also, because of disqualifying family conflicts," Trump asserted in a post.
