Former Iowa baseball star Cade Obermueller among ESPN staff's favorite MLB draft picks

Iowa baseball is starting to build a nice MLB pitcher pipeline as of late. In recent years, names like Brody Brecht and Adam Mazur have heard their names called on draft night, with the latter making his MLB debut earlier this season. And the Hawkeyes were able to add another pitcher to the big league ranks when Cade Obermueller was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2nd round of the 2025 MLB draft. Obermueller is seen as a quick riser through the minor league systems and many figure he could debut sooner rather than later. That thought process had a lot of scouts and executives excited over his potential and lead to him being drafted pretty early in this years draft. And the selection of Obermueller earned high praise from one veteran ESPN writer. Phillies named big winners after Obermueller selection ESPN MLB writer Kiley McDaniel released his favorite picks of the first day of the MLB draft on Monday morning and the Phillies were mentioned after their selections of Obermueller and Arkansas pitcher Gage Wood. The Phillies' next pick, Cade Obermueller, is another possible starter who also could move quickly as a lefty turning 22 later this month with two knockout pitches in his fastball/slider combo. Odds are good that at least one of them can provide big league value in the next 12 months if Philly wants to utilize them that way. -McDaniel. Obermueller is more than deserving of the praise after a stellar career at Iowa. Across three seasons with the Hawkeyes, Obermueller started 30 games and pitched 165 innings. He had a 3.60 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and an astounding 226 strikeouts. Last season for the Hawks, Obermueller started 15 games, going 5-3 with a 3.02 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 117 strikeouts in 83.1 innings. He was named an All-Big Ten first team selection following his 2025 season. Obermueller was previously drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 19th round of the 2024 MLB draft, but chose to return to school to improve his stock. And that decision payed major dividends. He now joins an organization that knows how to develop pitching, with names like Ranger Suarez, Aaron Nola, Cristopher Sanchez and Mick Abel all having success in their system. And now Obermueller will get the chance to add to the Hawkeye pitching tree, which continues to blossom under Rick Heller. Iowa Baseball's Cade Obermueller Named To Big Ten All-Tournament Team

Iowa Baseball's Cade Obermueller Named To Big Ten All-Tournament Team While Iowa baseball (33-22-1, 21-9 Big Ten) ended the once-promising season on a sour note with a 9-3 loss against UCLA (42-16, 22-8) in the Big Ten Tournament semifinal on Saturday from Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Neb., the Hawkeyes did receive some excellent individual news on Sunday evening as junior starting pitcher Cade Obermueller was named to the 2025 Big Ten All-Tournament Team. Obermueller earned the honor by showcasing his supreme skillset during the Hawkeyes' 4-3 pool-play win over Rutgers on May 21, which would be his only start in the conference tournament. During the performance, the Iowa City, Iowa, native threw seven shutout innings, allowing four hits and one base-on-balls with 10 strikeouts. For the 2024 19th round selection by the Texas Rangers, it is his first Big Ten All-Tournament Team honor and Iowa's first player to earn this distinction since the Hawkeyes had pitcher Ty Langenberg, shortstop Michael Seegers, and outfielders Kyle Huckstorf and Sam Peterson do so in 2023. Obermueller would end his tremendous junior campaign with a 5-3 record and a 3.02 ERA, along with 117 (12.64 strikeouts per nine innings) strikeouts in 15 appearances. During those 15 starts, he surrendered 62 hits (6.7 hits per nine innings), 36 runs (28 earned), five home runs, 32 base-on-balls, and one wild pitch. While nothing has been revealed just yet regarding Obermueller's intentions to return to Iowa for his senior season in 2026 or join the Rangers' organization, the Hawkeyes will certainly be prepared for either scenario as they piece together what went wrong over their final three weeks of the 2025 season. Iowa baseball earns eight All-Big Ten honors

Iowa baseball earns eight All-Big Ten honors With the Big Ten Baseball Tournament underway from Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Neb., the conference announced its numerous regular-season honors Tuesday morning, for which eight Iowa baseball (32-20-1, 21-9 Big Ten) players earned recognition. Although the Hawkeyes faltered mightily down the stretch, which ultimately cost the program a chance at the conference regular-season crown and top overall seed in the postseason tournament, there is still lots to celebrate regarding Iowa's performance throughout their 21-9 record within the Big Ten. Beginning with the strength of the Hawkeyes team, junior starting pitchers Cade Obermueller and Aaron Savary were both named to the All-Big Ten First Team. At the same time, redshirt senior Reece Beuter was placed on the All-Big Ten Second Team. Obermueller earned first-team All-Big Ten honors after going 4-3 with a 3.30 ERA in 14 regular-season starts, where he posted four quality starts and struck out 107 batters over 76.1 innings. His 107 punchouts lead the Big Ten and rank fourth in program history in a single season. Savary earned his recognition after going 7-1, including 5-0 in conference play, with a 3.74 ERA in 14 regular-season starts. The right-hander recorded a team-high six quality starts and struck out 81 batters in 77 innings. Beuter earned second-team honors following a 6-0 record and ranking fourth in the conference with a 3.14 ERA in 13 regular-season starts. He held opponents to a .196 batting average and fanned 66 over 63 innings on the hill. The conference's recognition of the Hawkeyes' pitching makes Iowa the only school to have all three weekend starters named to the All-Big Ten lists. Joining Savary and Obermueller in the First Team class is redshirt sophomore Reese Moore, who finished with a batting average of .319, .454 on-base percentage, and .577 slugging percentage at the plate to go along with a team-leading nine home runs, two triples, and 45 RBIs. During conference play, Moore hit a batting average of .305 with nine doubles, six home runs, and 26 RBIs. Accompanying Beuter on the Second Team list is graduate student Daniel Rogers, who finished with a batting average of .262, .405 on-base percentage, and .470 slugging percentage with 11 doubles, seven home runs, and 41 RBIs in 47 regular-season starts in his lone season in Iowa City. Senior Ben Wilmes was the lone Hawkeye to earn Third Team honors as the Johnston, Iowa, native slashed a batting average of .313, .402 on-base percentage, and .513 slugging percentage to accompany seven home runs, 16 doubles, one triple, and a career-high 41 RBIs. Redshirt freshman Jaixon Frost was named to the All-Freshman Team after he finished with a batting average of .316, .407 on-base percentage, and .500 slugging percentage with 23 RBIs, 12 extra base hits, and three home runs in 37 regular-season appearances. The Kellerton, Iowa, native also hit .309 in Big Ten play with 15 RBIs, six doubles, and two home runs. Rounding out the eight Hawkeyes honored is redshirt freshman Max Burt, who was selected as Iowa's Big Ten Sportsmanship recipient. The distinction is presented to student-athletes who display sportsmanship and ethical behavior, are in good academic standing, and demonstrate good citizenship outside of athletics. Iowa's seven All-Big Ten selections give head coach Rick Heller 47 selections in his 12 seasons in Iowa City. Heller has coached at least one first-team All-Big Ten selection in 10 of his 11 seasons when awards were handed out (there were no honors in 2020 due to the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic). The third-seeded Hawkeyes' first game of the 2025 Big Ten Baseball Tournament will be tomorrow vs. No. 10 seed Rutgers (28-27, 15-15) at 6 p.m. CT from Charles Schwab Field. The entire tournament will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network. All of Iowa's games can also be heard through the Hawkeyes Radio Network alongside play-by-play voice John Leo and color analyst John Evans.
