Randomized Shows Her Heels To Molly Pitcher Rivals

Randomized Shows Her Heels To Molly Pitcher Rivals originally appeared on Paulick Report. Klaravich Stables' multiple graded stakes winner Randomized got the jump on her five filly and mare rivals out of the starting gate and was never headed en route to a three-length victory in Saturday's Grade 3, $500,000 Molly Pitcher, one of five graded stakes on Haskell Day at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J. Ridden by Flavien Prat for Chad Brown, a combination that won the 2022 Molly Pitcher with Search Results, Randomized covered 1 1/16 miles on a fast track in 1:42.75. The 5-year-old mare by Nyquist out of French Passport, by Elusive Quality, set all the fractions, going :23.97 for the opening quarter mile, :47.25 for the half, 1:10;98 for six furlongs and 1:36.15 for the mile. The victory was the third of the card for Brown and second for Prat. The pair came back in the next race, the G2 United Nations, to win with another Klaravich Stables runner, Redistricting. Randomized paid $6 to win. Majestic Oops finished second, a nose ahead of Candied in third, with Dorth Vader fourth, Occult fifth, and Chilled sixth. Leslie's Rose, who was entered in and won Friday's G2 Shuvee at Saratoga, was scratched, as were Regaled and Power Squeeze. Randomized, breaking from the three post, got the early advantage over Dorth Vader, who broke to her outside under John Velazquez. Dorth Vader, coming off a win in the G1 Ogden Phipps at Saratoga, was lapped on Randomized around the turn and in the run down the backstretch, but when the field rounded the final turn and straightened away into the stretch, Randomized put her away and raced off to the victory. 'She's a mare that always is forwardly placed," said Prat. "She jumped well out of the gate and got herself in the lead and took it from there. She felt very good.' Bred in Kentucky by Cove Springs, Randomized was purchased for $420,000 from Four Star Sales at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. She won the G1 Alabama and G2 Beldame before finishing second to Idiomatic in the G1 Distaff as a 3-year-old in 2023, then added the G1 Ogden Phipps last year at 4. She came into the Molly Pitcher off a fifth-place finish over a sloppy racetrack in this year's Phipps, her second start of the year after a close third in the G1 La Troienne, beaten three-quarters of a length, May 2 at Churchill her win in the Molly Pitcher, Randomized has six wins from 13 career starts. Journalism wins the $1 million Haskell Stakes to earn trip to Breeders' Cup

Journalism proved again what a great competitor and super horse he is, rallying from next to last on the backstretch to win the $1 million Haskell Stakes on Saturday at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J. The stretch run was vintage but Journalism's start in the 1 1/8-mile race was poor as the 3-year-old broke seventh in the eight-horse field. He seemed to struggle, taking a fair amount of kickback from the somewhat muddy track. But around the far turn he moved to the outside and started to pick off horses, almost coming even with Gosger and Goal Oriented, who were side-by-side on the rail, at the top of the stretch. He still looked beaten mid-stretch but with about a furlong to go he got real interested, running in about four path, well clear of the other horses. Then his stride got more powerful and he breezed to a half-length win. It was his sixth win in nine lifetime races. Read more: D. Wayne Lukas, Hall of Fame trainer who shaped horse racing, dies 'I don't think he broke as well as we would have liked [Saturday],' said Michael McCarthy, Journalism's trainer. 'As soon as they got to the backside, he started engaging a little bit, but not quite like we've seen in previous races. It took him a little while to get to the front. I'm not sure if that was by design from [jockey] Umberto [Rispoli], but with a target in front of him. He's just a different horse. Journalism, who went off at 2-5, paid $2.80 to win. Gosger was second followed by Goal Oriented, Bracket Buster, Burnham Square, National Law, Kentucky Outlaw and Wildncrazynight. The win gave Journalism a free, expenses paid trip to the Breeders' Cup on Nov. 1 at Del Mar. The Haskell is part of the win-and-in program that helps to get the best horses to the Breeders' Cup. The big question is where will Journalism run next. Given that he is based in Southern California, it wouldn't be surprising to see him in the Pacific Classic on Aug. 30 at Del Mar. It would be a good prep for the Breeders' Cup Classic for a couple reasons. It would be his first race against older horses (defined as horses 4 and older) and also that the Breeders' Cup is at Del Mar. Journalism broke his maiden at Del Mar on Nov. 17. It would also mean little travel, a big plus considering Journalism has not run in Southern California since April 5 when he won the Santa Anita Derby. Saturday was his sixth race in five months and in five different states. Another option, and likely the one favored by most fans, could be the Travers Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 23 for a potential rematch with Kentucky Derby and Belmont winner Sovereignty. The Journalism-Sovereignty rivalry has been the best the sport has seen in a few years. Sovereignty has won both of their meetings, the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, while Journalism won the Preakness, a race that Sovereignty skipped because of the two weeks of spacing between the first and second legs of the Triple Crown. Journalism was the only horse to run in all three Triple Crown races. Trainer McCarthy played his cards close when asked after the race what was up next for Journalism. Read more: Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty wins the Belmont Stakes, beating Journalism again 'Judging by the amount of mud on him, a pretty hot bath, a nice hot bubble bath and we'll get him back to the barn,' McCarthy said. 'We'll enjoy this tonight and kind of think about what we're going to do from here.' Journalism was an $825,000 purchase by Eclipse Thoroughbreds, which includes Don Alberto Corp. as an investor. He was sired by Curlin with Mopotism as the mare. The daughter of Uncle Mo was euthanized on July 15 after complications from colic, a gastrointestinal issue. Mopotism, who ran in Southern California for trainer Doug O'Neill, was 11 when she died. Christine Bossinakis Wins Monmouth's Bill Handleman Award originally appeared on Paulick Report. Christina Bossinakis, senior editor for the Thoroughbred Daily News and a prominent TV racing personality, has been named the winner of the 2025 Bill Handleman Award for outstanding coverage of last year's NYRA Bets Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J. First presented in 2012, the Handleman Award honors distinguished media coverage of the $1 million, Grade 1 NYRA Bets Haskell Stakes, Monmouth Park's showcase race. It is presented annually prior to the Haskell. The award honors the late Bill Handleman, one of New Jersey's top sportswriters for nearly three decades for the Asbury Park Press. Handleman, a fixture at Monmouth Park and a passionate chronicler of the sport, died in June of 2010 at the age of 62. She co-authored the book 'Sermon on the Mount' with the late Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas. 'This means a lot. I've always had a soft spot for Monmouth Park from working there with TVG,' Bossinakis said. 'I have spent a lot of time with the people at Monmouth Park, so it makes it a special honor for me. 'It's nice to feel rewarded when you put your heart and soul into something you love, so I am very appreciative.' Monmouth Park general manager John Heims called Bossinakis 'the consummate professional.' 'Her knowledge of Thoroughbred racing, both historical and current, never fails to impress,' said Heims. 'In addition to her excellent coverage of last year's Haskell on the Thoroughbred Daily News site, she has excelled in a variety of roles in the racing industry.' The first recipient of the Handleman Award was Tom Luicci of The Star-Ledger, followed by Steve Edelson of The Asbury Park Press in 2013, Dave Johnson of Sirius XM in 2014, Ed McNamara of Newsday in 2015, Bob Ehalt of and Bloodhorse in 2016, Tom Cassidy of in 2017, Jim Dunleavy of Daily Racing Form in 2018, Mike Farrell of The Associated Press in 2019, Steve Byk of At the Races With Steve Byk in 2020, Matt Shifman of Horse Racing Nation in 2021, John Brennan of in 2022, announcer/TV racing analyst Larry Collmus in 2023 and videographer Carlos Morales of Agentes 305 last year.
