Sonic boom shakes Southern California as SpaceX aircraft returns to Earth

Most of Southern California felt the shaking from a brief sonic boom created by a SpaceX aircraft as it reentered Earth's atmosphere on Saturday night. "Dragon is on track to reenter Earth's atmosphere and splash down off the southern coast of California near Oceanside at ~10:44 p.m. PT," said a post on X from SpaceX. The company said that the aircraft would "announce its arrival" with a brief sonic boom before landing in the Pacific Ocean. Dragon officially landed in the water at approximately 10:45 p.m, another X post said. According to SpaceX, Dragon is a spacecraft that can take both humans and cargo to space. "It is the only spacecraft currently flying that is capable of returning significant amounts of cargo to Earth, and is the first private spacecraft to take humans to the space station," according to the website. This is a developing story. Check back for details.

Oceanside City Council votes to grant community appeal, Eddie Jones warehouse project will not move forward

OCEANSIDE, Calif. — Oceanside City Council approved the community's appeal of a controversial warehouse project in a 3-to-2 vote. After nearly three years of debate, the Eddie Jones Warehouse project will not be able to move forward. 'We have been fighting this for 32 months,' said Gene O'Neal. 'We've gathered almost 6,000 signatures, we rallied, we've done everything,' said Ken McCallick. In February, the planning commission unanimously approved the manufacturing and distribution facility that would include four buildings totaling nearly 500-thousand square feet off Benet Road near Highway 76. The commission reduced the number of truck bays to 34, from the 114 originally planned. On Wednesday night, the community was ready to appeal that decision at city council. 'We are concerned that that's still too many. That zoning is no more than six heavy trucks on the premises at one time,' said Carol McConnell. Developer RPG had applied for a conditional use permit to allow for larger use of the 32-acre site and made significant changes to the project. 'We reduced the truck bays by 70%, reduced the square footage of the building, the original design was for one primary structure. It's now been reconfigured into four structures for multi-tenant use, not Amazon as some have feared,' explained Arlene Tendick, community engagement director for RPG. Before council made it's decision, they heard hours of public comment and presentations largely echoing the consistent concerns of traffic and pollution. While some supported the project, as it promised to bring in an estimated 510 permanent jobs and roughly 1,400 temporary construction jobs. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
