Viktor Gyokeres issues early demand to Arsenal captain - 'The only thing I need'

Viktor Gyokeres has flown out to Asia to link up with his new Arsenal team-mates and their £63.7million signing has already made it clear what he'll demand from them New Arsenal signing Viktor Gyokeres wants one thing from captain Martin Odegaard: assists. Gyokeres, 27, finally completed his £63.7million move to the Emirates on Saturday, putting pen to paper on a five-year contract. ‌ The Swede's arrival ends Arsenal's long search for a striker and boss Mikel Arteta hopes that he'll be the missing piece of their jigsaw. Gyokeres scored 97 goals in just 101 games for Sporting Lisbon, making him one of the most prolific marksmen in Europe. ‌ But the former Coventry City talisman will need service and wants Odegaard to provide it. In a video posted on Arsenal's social media channels, Gyokeres can be seen reading out a letter from the Gunners skipper. ‌ "If there's anything you need or any way I can help, just give me a shout," part of Odegaard's message read. "Some assists, please, would be nice," Gyokeres interjected. The 27-year-old then continued reading, saying: "Looking forward to working together and sharing success in the season ahead. All the best, Martin." Gyokeres then said: "Very nice. The only thing I need is some assists." The Sweden international met Odegaard for the first time on Sunday, as he arrived in Singapore to watch Arsenal beat Newcastle 3-2. Odegaard scored the winning goal, converting an 84th-miniute penalty. Next up for the Gunners is a clash with bitter north London rivals Tottenham on Thursday in Hong Kong. Gyokeres could make his debut in the 'friendly' but his lack of match fitness may well delay his first outing in an Arsenal shirt. Is Viktor Gyokeres the answer to Arsenal's problems? Have your say in the comments section. ‌ Arteta didn't rule out the possibility of Gyokeres featuring, though, saying: "Well I think he hasn't had a single training session with the team since the last game with Sporting when they became champions. "So we will assess him tomorrow, he's done all the medicals, everything is looking good but to get him up to speed with the right levels of fitness I think is very important. So we're not going to stop him, we want him with us as quick as possible but we'll have to assess and the medical team will do that." If he does appear, Gyokeres will don the No.14 shirt famously worn by Gunners legend Thierry Henry. His competitive debut is likely to be against Manchester United - who were also interested in signing him - on Sunday, August 16, the opening weekend of the 2025-26 Premier League season. Martin Odegaard's Penalty Helps Arsenal Pip Newcastle United 3-2 In Friendly

Last Updated: Martin Odegaard's late penalty, won by Max Dowman, secured a 3-2 victory for Arsenal over Newcastle in a pre-season friendly in Singapore. Martin Odegaard scored a late penalty, won by Max Dowman, to secure a 3-2 victory over Newcastle in an intense pre-season friendly in Singapore on Sunday. Two quick goals in the first half initially turned the game in Arsenal's favour after Anthony Elanga gave Newcastle an early lead with a fortunate goal that bobbled beyond David Raya. Kai Havertz played a crucial role in both of Arsenal's goals. He set up Mikel Merino with a neat lay-off inside the area, before delivering a dangerous cross that Newcastle defender Alex Murphy inadvertently crashed into his own net. Newcastle equalised through a Jacob Murphy drive in the second half, but Odegaard scored from 12 yards late on to secure another pre-season win. How Arsenal Beat Newcastle United? The excitement was palpable even before the match began, as new signing Viktor Gyokeres was introduced to the overwhelmingly supportive Arsenal crowd, who vastly outnumbered the Newcastle fans. Despite the fervent support for Arsenal, Newcastle struck first. Sandro Tonali delivered a ball into the box that found Anthony Elanga, whose mishit shot wrong-footed David Raya, giving Newcastle a 1-0 lead within the first five minutes. Arsenal responded with urgency. Havertz narrowly missed with a header, Trossard's shot was blocked, and Saka's runs on the right wing caused the Newcastle defence problems. Ben White then fired over the bar from a promising position, and Raya made an important save from Bruno Guimaraes before White cleared the rebound. Following the water break, Mikel Merino equalised with a well-executed one-two involving Havertz, finishing calmly into the bottom corner. Within a minute, Arsenal took the lead as Havertz's dangerous cross forced an own goal from Alex Murphy. Arteta introduced Odegaard after the break, and soon after, Kiwior replaced Calafiori. Newcastle responded with an equaliser through Jacob Murphy, whose low shot found the back of the net through a crowd of players. Max Dowman's introduction proved to be decisive. He immediately tested both Newcastle keepers with his sharp runs and close-range efforts. Eventually, Joelinton fouled him in the box, and Odegaard confidently converted the resulting penalty. What's Next For Arsenal? The final game of Arsenal's Asia Tour is on Thursday against Tottenham Hotspur in Hong Kong's Kai Tak Stadium. The first-ever North London derby to be played outside of the UK will bring the curtain down on Arsenal's pre-season tour. view comments First Published: July 27, 2025, 20:40 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Will Arsenal's transfer pursuit of Eberechi Eze spell the end for Gunners star?

Arsenal's summer transfer business is not done yet with Eze Eberechi still firmly on the club's radar. Talks to bring the Crystal Palace star across the capital to north London have slowed somewhat in recent weeks with focus on getting a deal for Viktor Gyokeres over the line and tying Ethan Nwaneri down to a new long-term contract. Even with the signing of Noni Madueke, there is a need for another creative spark in Mikel Arteta side. Martin Odegaard, so often Arsenal's chief creator, endured a difficult 2024-25 campaign after returning from the ankle injury that sidelined him for three months. The club captain's waning influence was an unavoidable factor in another failed title bid and heightened the need for another option if Arsenal are to go toe-to-toe with Liverpool next season. Eze is coming off an outstanding season in south east London and with a World Cup year ahead of him, faces a huge decision on his club future. Arsenal could be his next destination. Rather than a replacement for Odegaard, Eze could be the perfect alternative. There was fair and legitimate concern for Odegaard last season. Far too often, his performances did not pass the eye test and his numbers compared to the 2023-24 season illustrate concerns that only grew as last season wore on. Eze on the other hand enjoyed his best season to date with Palace. His haul of 14 goals and 11 assists in all competitions represented a better return than any Arsenal player in those departments, eclipsing Kai Havertz's haul of nine goals and Bukayo Saka's 10 assists. Eze created 57 chances for his Palace teammates last season, more than Kevin de Bruyne, Luis Diaz, Anthony Gordon and Matheus Cunha among others. Despite his indifferent form however, only seven players created more chanced than Odegaard (57) last season with the skipper also top of Arsenal's charts for that metric, clear of Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka. While it was a huge drop off from the 102 he created in the 2023-24 season, it is still good enough for a top eight spot across the Premier League. Odegaard has so often been one of Arsenal's cleanest strikers of the ball. While he did rediscover his range against Southampton on the final day of the season, he was too often guilty of passing up the opportunity to test the goalkeeper whether it be from distance or inside the box. A tally of 49 shots with 17 on target (a conversation rate on 6.12 per cent) tells its own story. It is not something that fazes Eze. Only five players attempted more shots on goal than the 26-year-old (101) during the 2024-25 campaign. Whether it can be attributed to Arteta's tactical instructions, Arsenal rank low for shots on goal across the board with Eze's 29 efforts on target last season a better return than anyone in the red half of north London. Eze also ranks high for combined shots and chances created last term with only Bruno Fernandes, Mohamed Salah, Cole Palmer, Bukayo Saka and Erling Haaland averaging higher per 90 than Eze's 5.6. His wonderful long-range strikes against Fulham and Aston Villa in the FA Cup demonstrated his willingness to test the goalkeeper from range – with his winning goal in the final against Manchester City showing how dangerous he is breaking into the box. While Eze's arrival would ease the creative burden on Odegaard and add much-needed goals to the Arsenal midfield, there is another reason why Arteta holds him in such high regard. With so much of Arsenal's game built on structure and discipline, Eze offers somewhat of a release, a flamboyant outlet who brings something different from recent midfielders brought to the club in Mikel Merino and Martin Zubimendi. Eze also measures high in the defensive metrics that will be most pleasing to the Arsenal boss. The Palace star was successful in 157 ground duels last season, comfortably more than any one in the Arsenal squad. More Trending His possession won stats are also impressive with his tally of 146 only bettered by William Saliba and Declan Rice. While one of the most eye-catching players in the top flight, Eze is not afraid to get his hands dirty. Arsenal have strengthened across the board this summer with Kepa Arrizabalaga, Mikkel Damsgaard, Martin Zubimendi and Noni Madueke in place. Valencia centre-half Cristhian Mosquera is also on the way while a deal for Viktor Gyokeres appears to be within touching distance. Arsenal know what they have to do to sign Eze – Palace have stood firm on their £68million release clause and any deal will hinge on the Gunners coughing up that cash.
