New Northampton Odeon opens at the site of closed Cineworld

A new cinema has opened at the site of a former Cineworld which closed earlier this Odeon Luxe will operate from Sixfields Leisure in Weedon Road, chain's previous site in the county, located in Kettering, Northamptonshire, closed in January and is set to be Jenkins, Odeon's commercial director in the UK and Ireland, said: "We were really happy to take on this project, we saw an opportunity here." The Cineworld closure on 19 January was part of a wider shake-up within the Cineworld group, which saw six locations shut as landlords opted to reclaim properties during the company's restructuring process.A petition to keep the Cineworld open attracted more than 800 signatures, with locals describing the closure as "another important staple of our town being taken away".A separate petition to save the Odeon in Kettering gathered more than 2,000 signatures, but the site was approved for demolition by North Northamptonshire Council. Ms Jenkins said the closure of the Kettering Odeon was a mutual decision between the chain and the landlord, adding the company was "really sad to let to community down there".She added: "But this opportunity came up and there is, from the location point, some cross over there, so it a was really good solution for us with the unfortunate closure of Kettering." Brit Voller, the new cinema's manager, said: "It's been a journey getting it all ready, but seeing now we can't wait to guest through the doors." 'Good for all cinemas' Wendy Goldie the manager of the Arc Cinema in Daventry, 11 miles (18km) away, welcomed the Odeon reopening the Sixfields said: "It's great to see investment in good quality cinema facilities – it benefits the community that lives nearby, and encourages cinemagoing generally which is good for all cinemas."Last year with announcement of several cinema closures there was concern about the industry but Ms Goldie said the Arc had a "extremely loyal" customers."Our amazing staff really look after them and build relationships with them [and] we do engage with the needs of the community," she said. Rylan Clark kept Doctor Who Interstellar Song Contest casting secret for a year

The episode is due to air on May 17, the same night that the Eurovision Song Contest Final is due to take place in Basel, Switzerland. Rylan Clark and Sabine (Julie Dray) in Doctor Who's Eurovision-themed episode (BBC Studios/Bad Wolf/James Pardon) Describing himself as a 'massive Whovian', Clark said: 'It was so hard to keep the secret, and I've been sat on it for a year. 'I told a few key people who had to know but we've really kept it super private. 'I played myself but also added a bit of Caesar (Flickerman) from the Hunger Games for good measure.' Caesar refers to the character from the Hunger Games franchise, played by Stanley Tucci, who is an eccentric presenter who interviews the tributes and commentates on the Games which see children fight in an arena to their death. According to Clark the episode is 'out of this world', with lots of twists while paying close attention to the details of the actual song contest it is based on. He added: 'People can expect to see everything they love about Doctor Who. 'Also, from working on actual Eurovision itself, there were so many similarities – the attention to detail was amazing. 'Expect the unexpected – it's probably the most twisty one of the whole season.' Juno Dawson attending the premiere of Doctor Who season two at the Odeon Luxe West End, Leicester Square, London (Ian West/PA) Ncuti Gatwa, known for his breakout role as Eric Effiong in the hit Netflix series Sex Education, plays this season's Doctor alongside Varada Sethu who plays the Companion, Belinda Chandra. Juno Dawson, a writer on the series, said she was approached by producer Russell T Davies to help write the episode. She said: 'In 2022, Russell asked how I would feel about doing Die Hard meets Eurovision. I couldn't turn that down. 'Russell initially pitched the bare bones concept of Eurovision meets Die Hard, which were two things I knew really well. 'Then, I went away and pitched a plot, and it hasn't really changed all that much. 'Obviously, there was a lot of discussion between myself, the producers and Russell. 'But it's still those two things. What would happen if an enemy faction planned an attack on the Eurovision Song Contest in space?' Speaking about the episode, Dawson, whose books include This Book Is Gay and Her Majesty's Royal Coven, described it as a 'disaster movie' while keeping to the camp nature the Eurovision Song Contest is known for. She added: 'It's like a disaster movie. I think people are certainly going to expect it to be … let's just say camp. I mean of course it is, it's the Interstellar Song Contest. 'But also, it's action-packed. It doesn't let up for a second. It's a really high-octane episode. 'In places it's quite harrowing. 'I think the best science fiction and fantasy should always have something to say about the world. 'While being an absolute romp on a space station, these are characters caught in an extraordinary situation that I hope people will feel on an emotional level as well.' The episode comes as the all-female trio Remember Monday are set to represent the UK in Switzerland with their song What The Hell Just Happened? Clark will present live commentary on BBC One for the Eurovision semi-finals on May 13 and May 15 as well as the final on May 17 for BBC Radio 2 alongside presenter Scott Mills.

Scots film fanatic honoured at London ceremony for being the biggest spender on Odeon movie snacks

A Scots film fanatic was honoured at a glittering ceremony in London for being one of the UK's highest spenders on movie snacks. Devoted cinema-goer Martin Durning, 31, was presented with a Movie Munchies Award at the inaugural Odeon Extras awards in London last night. Taking place at the Odeon Luxe in Leicester Square, the awards were hosted by comedian Luke Hamnett and recognised seven winners for their passion for film and loyalty to their local Odeon cinema. Martin, a retail assistant from East Kilbride, is a regular visitor to the Odeon East Kilbride and Glasgow Springfield Quay and now has the title of one of the highest spenders in the whole of the UK on movie snacks. Attending the awards with his 13-year-old nephew, Oscar, who regularly accompanies Martin to the cinema, he said: 'I go to cinema at least once a week – sometimes twice. It's probably my favourite thing to do. I often take my nephews and I always treat them to snacks. "Our favourites are the chicken strips, a hot dog, mozzarella sticks and the potato tots and the nacho cheese dip is a must. My nephews also love an ice cream and a pick 'n' mix. Controversially, I'm not a fan of popcorn! 'I think having movie snacks makes it an extra special experience and enjoying them on the reclining seats makes it the perfect evening out. 'The last film I went to see was Warfare just last week – it was really brilliant. I also enjoy seeing the older classic films which Odeon often screen and I really love a lot of the kids films too which is why it's such great fun taking my nephews. Next on my list is definitely Sinners.' After being presented with his award by comedian Luke Hamnett, Martin and his fellow award winners were treated to an exclusive showing of the 80s classic, ET. Luke Hamnett said: 'Going to the cinema is absolutely one of my favourite things to do so it's been such a pleasure to meet so many film fanatics. I've loved hearing all about their favourite movies and cinema stories – I might even have been inspired with a few sketch ideas.' Suzie Welch, Odeon managing director UK&I, commented: 'Martin is one of seven winners celebrated at our Odeon Extras Awards on Wednesday. We are so incredibly grateful to all our loyal members, many of whom have been with us for years, for helping us build a vibrant community of passionate film fans. We were delighted to be able to recognise them and hear about their most memorable cinema experiences.' The Odeon Extras Awards is part of the launch campaign for OdeonExtras, a new free loyalty scheme, and the first of its kind in the UK cinema market, that rewards members with points for every pound spent. Points can be used for free tickets and put towards Odeon's food and drink treats. Members will also be entitled to a free large popcorn on their birthday.
