Former Oregon QB Turning Heads During NFL OTAs
Former Oregon QB Turning Heads During NFL OTAs originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Fans of the Oregon Ducks are likely clamoring for more after enjoying one of the best seasons in the history of the football program. They navigated the regular season, going undefeated through their first year in the Big Ten Conference after moving from the Pac-12. Advertisement The Ducks continued to impress after defeating the Penn State Nittany Lions in the Big Ten Championship game. Their dominance landed them the No. 1 overall pick in the College Football Playoff. However, the extra time off may have been detrimental, as they went from December 7, until New Year's Day without a game after four months playing essentially every week and fell to the Ohio State Buckeyes, who were coming off a win over Tennessee. Former Oregon QB turning heads in NFL OTAs Dillon Gabriel was the leader of the high-flying Oregon offense and was eventually selected in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. However, a different former Ducks quarterback has been turning heads in NFL OTAs. Advertisement According to FOX 8 New Orleans' Sean Fazende, Saints quarterback Tyler Shough has made an impression. "Shough looks very comfortable with vertical routes & out-breaking patterns," Fazende said on "His best throw may have been an incompletion where he rolled to his left and threw off platform to the sideline. Right now, not quite as comfortable in intermediate middle of field." Shough spent three seasons with the Ducks. In his first two, he was backing up Justin Herbert before being handed the reins. He eventually transferred to Texas Tech and then Louisville before the Saints took him in the second round. After Derek Carr's sudden retirement, Shough is now a candidate to win the starting job with Spencer Rattler. Advertisement It remains to be seen what kind of chance Shough truly has to win the starting job, but after watching Rattler in parts of last season, the Saints could decide to give him a chance. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 1, 2025, where it first appeared.

Steelers Rookie Jack Sawyer Already Drawing Rave Reviews
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Pittsburgh Steelers put together a very interesting draft. While they didn't take a quarterback as early as expected, waiting until the sixth round to bring in Will Howard, they made other big-time moves before that selection. One of the more intriguing additions was former Ohio State standout pass rusher Jack Sawyer. Sawyer, who was one of the heroes of the College Football Playoff for the Buckeyes, will now look to help T.J. Watt with pressure off of the edge. So far, he is making a major impression on the Steelers and his new teammates. Read more: Peyton Manning Doesn't Hold Back About Aaron Rodgers Amid Steelers Rumors Alex Highsmith, Pittsburgh's veteran linebacker, spoke out with major praise for Sawyer. He likes what he's seeing from the rookie defender. "He's gonna be a dog for us," Highsmith said. "He's got his right head on his shoulders and he works hard. Like I said, he's got the right mindset. It's been cool being able to interact with him and help him out. I came in as a rookie, and T.J. [Watt] and Bud [Dupree] helped me out a lot, as well. That's one thing I want to be able to pour into the new guys that are coming in." Two things can be taken from that quote. Number one, Sawyer could provide an instant impact for the Steelers. Secondly, Highsmith has become a major leader for the defense and will be very helpful for young players. Of course, the rumors surrounding Pittsburgh on the offensive side of the football have not died down. Aaron Rodgers still has yet to sign a contract and the quarterback situation is a complete question mark. Read more: Steelers Given Shocking Suggestion at QB and It's Not Aaron Rodgers Even with Rodgers onboard, the Steelers would need a great defense to compete in the AFC. They seem to have put that defense together well. During his college career at Ohio State, Sawyer played in four seasons and 54 total games. He racked up 144 total tackles to go along with 23 sacks, six forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, two defensive touchdowns, one interception, and 11 defended passes. There is no question that Sawyer has the talent to become a special player at the NFL level. Already, he's starting to show that potential and his teammates are clearly taking notice. Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes made an improbable run to a national championship win last season. It was a magical season that fans will never forget in Columbus. After losing the final game of the regular season at home to the arch-rival Michigan Wolverines, fans were done with Ohio State. Day was facing an immense amount of hateful comments and calls for him to be fired. That did not get him or the team down. Instead, the Buckeyes pulled closer together through the outside noise and prepared for the College Football Playoff. They were able to defeat Tennessee, Oregon, Texas, and finally Notre Dame to pull off the championship win. Read more: Texas QB Arch Manning Receives Head-Turning 2026 NFL Draft Prediction Day has not seemed terribly interested in coaching at the NFL level. However, there is always a chance that he could be intrigued by the right offer. Now, after a new suggestion from Connor Orr of Sports Illustrated, Day's name is being linked to the NFL once again. Orr believes that Day is included in a group of college coaches whom professional teams could try to convince to come to the NFL. Orr has predicted that at least two of the following college coaches will receive aggressive interest from NFL teams for head coaching opportunities. "Texas's Steve Sarkisian, Notre Dame's Marcus Freeman, Ohio State's Ryan Day, Iowa State's Matt Campbell, Colorado's Deion Sanders, David Shaw and USC's Lincoln Riley are among the names to watch," Orr wrote. "It's important to note that the odious Urban Meyer regime in Jacksonville is now far in the distance, Jim Harbaugh is successful and Chip Kelly is getting another run as a play-caller at the NFL level, which is a sign that attitudes are again shifting." He has compiled a 70-10 career record and now has the national championship win in 2024 on his resume. His previous and current players have gushed about how he handles himself and how he coaches. That will add to potential NFL interest. While it would be surprising to see Day leave his job with the Buckeyes, it's something to keep an eye on as jobs start opening up. Texas Colleges Could Soon Pay Athletes for First Time
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A bill making its way through the Texas legislature could see the state's colleges pay their student athletes for the first time. The Texas state senate unanimously passed a bill on Tuesday that would allow universities to enter into name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals directly with their athletes, either as compensation for team-sanctioned events in which they participate or as an incentive for enrollment. This differs from previous NIL legislation, which allowed deals to be struck between intercollegiate athletes and outside parties such as advertisers. Why It Matters Compensating student athletes has remained a contentious issue given the popularity and profitability of college sports in the United States, with many arguing the athletes themselves should be entitled to a share of the revenue they generate. Supporters of the current bill argue that this will also give colleges extra leverage to ensure talent is not lost to other states. Opponents, however, maintain that providing students with compensation beyond scholarships could undermine educational integrity and the longstanding amateurism model of collegiate sports. With one of the largest student athlete populations in the country, behind only California, the landmark Texas bill could see more states following suit. What To Know The NIL compensation bill passed through the Texas House in April and the Senate Education Committee earlier this month. Representative Carl Tepper, who drafted House Bill 126, told lawmakers during one debate: "We will be killing college football in Texas if we do not pass this bill." According to the amended bill, which passed in the Senate on Tuesday, student athletes will still be barred from receiving compensation for the endorsement of alcohol, tobacco and nicotine products, as well as steroids, gambling, firearms or any "sexually oriented business." Steve Limentani/The legislation follows several high-profile challenges to the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) rules regarding student athlete compensation. This includes the imminent settlement in House v. NCAA, a class-action lawsuit filed by several college athletes against the Association and its five largest conferences. The parties agreed to pay just under $2.8 billion in back damages to student-athletes who competed between 2016 and 2024 but were denied NIL benefits during their college attendance. The settlement still awaits final approval from United States District Judge Claudia Wilken. Senator Brandon Creighton, who sponsored the latest bill in the Texas Senate, cited the NCAA settlement as a motivation, saying: "We have to continue to work – especially with settlements like this – to bring any common sense and consistency possible to what has been considered the Wild West for name, image, and likeness and paying college athletes." What People Are Saying Texas state Representative Mitch Little, during a debate in April: "The university enters into an NIL contract with a student athlete [and] says: 'We're going to pay you $4 million to come and play college football here.' And then they get on campus, and the university decides 'you stink. We're not going to pay you the rest of this NIL contract.' What am I supposed to tell that student athlete?" What Happens Next The Texas compensation bill now awaits the signature of Governor Greg Abbott and could take effect as soon as September 1, according to The Texas Tribune.
