The ultimate Aussie winter getaway: Visit Shoalhaven for stargazing, treetop dining and swimming with whales

Winter is one of the best times of the year for a cosy getaway. If an overseas holiday isn't in the budget but you're craving a relaxing weekend escape, you're not alone — hundreds of Aussies are heading to the Shoalhaven coast for the ultimate winter retreat. Tucked away in the South Coast region of NSW, Shoalhaven is a 2-hour drive south of the bustling city of Sydney. Featuring 50 towns and villages, bordered by the mountains, coastal plains and 100 magnificent beaches, the Shoalhaven reigon has plenty to see and do. Whether you're travelling with friends or family, there's so many things to pencil into your itinerary. Best Picks lifestyle reporter Olivia Scott was lucky enough to spend a weekend away at the best-kept destination, and says it's like being transported to a bayside oasis. Here's everything she got up to during her weekend away. We started our weekend with stargazing in Jervis Bay on the Friday night followed by a hearty pub meal at Bud's Tavern which is a cosy 80's style bar. Hot tip: if you're a fan of mussels, definitely order them from this homey spot. We then went home to our gorgeous boutique accommodation, Bay and Bush in Jervis Bay which is a series of cottages nestled amongst Australian nature, were you can spot kangaroos roaming during sunrise. The rooms are comfortable, cosy and most importantly, have excellent heating for chilly winter days. The next morning we woke bright and early for a swimming with whales adventure booked through Dive Jervis Bay, a bucket-list activity that gets you up close with seals and whales. If you're not an intrepid traveller, you might want to swap snorkelling for visit to Silos Estate, an award-winning winery situated 30 minutes out of Jervis Bay in Berry and offers tastings and cheeseboards as well as special events. For those who love pasta as much as me, be sure to visit Pasta Buoy in Huskisson. They make all their fresh pasta in house and it is honestly one of the best dishes I've ever had. Another highlight of the trip was our incredible dinner at The Gunyah Restaurant at Paperbark Camp, a fine dining experience set up high in the treetops. The set menu was delicious and featured local Australian produce, meat and seafood. Sunday morning, we set out to Berry and had hot doughnuts and coffee before going to visit the Berry Tea Shop and The Treat Factory. Almost all their candies and jams are made in-store, it felt like stepping back in time to an old-fashioned lolly shop. My favourite thing about a weekend in Shoalhaven is that it's for all ages and stages of life. There's something for everyone, whether you're a family with kids, a couple, a group of friends or setting out on a solo adventure, this south coast spot does not disappoint. Where to Stay in Shoalhaven Bay and Bush Jervis Bay Where to Eat in Shoalhaven Pasta Buoy — for a casual pasta lunch. — a fine dining meal. Salty Joe's — the best coffee and fresh muffins. Blak Cede Cafe — for a delicious, authentic breakfast (keep in mind it's closed on a Sunday). Bud's Tavern — for a hearty pub meal. What to Do in Shoalhaven Jervis Bay Stargazing Swim with Whales Silos Estate Tara Distillery Flamin Galah Brewery Jervis Bay Brewery Co.
