QOC president meets Japan's ambassador to Qatar

DOHA: President of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani has met with Ambassador of Japan to the State of Qatar HE Naoto Hisajima. The meeting reviewed the strong sporting ties between the two countries and explored ways to further develop and strengthen cooperation in the coming period. Discussions also touched on topics of mutual interest, including preparations for the upcoming World Athletics Championships-Tokyo 2025 and the 20th Asian Games- Nagoya 2026. It also discussed the promising opportunities for exchanging expertise between the two nations in the fields of sports administration and the organization of major events, building on the extensive experience both sides possess in this domain. Sheikh Joaan reaffirmed the QOC's commitment to expanding international cooperation and knowledge exchange with friendly countries. He noted that the Qatari-Japanese partnership serves as a promising model for synergy in advancing the aspirations of the Olympic Movement and promoting sustainability and innovation in the sports sector at both regional and international levels. The meeting was attended by Secretary General of the QOC Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain.

QOC Secretary-General meets with Oman NOC Secretary-General

Jassim bin Rashid Al-Buenain, Secretary General of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC), on Wednesday met with Abdullah bin Muhammad Bamkhallaf, Secretary-General of the Oman Olympic Committee and President of the Oman Table Tennis Association, who is currently visiting Doha. During the meeting, the two sides reviewed bilateral cooperation between the Qatari and Omani Olympic Committees and explored ways to enhance it in the coming period, in a manner that supports the progress of joint GCC sports initiatives and promotes the exchange of expertise in sports administration and development programs. The two parties emphasized the importance of continued cooperation among GCC Olympic Committees to further support athletes and strengthen the institutional foundations of sport in the region, in alignment with the aspirations of the Olympic Movement. The Omani official praised Qatar's outstanding organizational success in hosting the ITTF World Table Tennis Championships – Doha 2025, stating that this achievement reflects Qatar's leading position on the global sports map and its ability to deliver a comprehensive model for hosting major international events.

DOHA: President of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) and Senior Vice President of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani has met with the President of the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee (KSOC) Ryu Seung-min, on the sidelines of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) meetings currently being held in Doha. The meeting discussed ways to enhance cooperation between the sports institutions of Qatar and the Republic of Korea, with a focus on developing the Olympic Movement, planning for a sports legacy, and expanding areas of strategic cooperation in summer and winter sports. Secretary-General of QOC Jassim Rashid Al Buainain attended the meeting.

Pak sports community mourns Asif Azeem

Pakistan sports community lost one of the most sincere and genuine of its members, Asif Azeem in the wee hours of Friday, May 23 in Karachi. The 53-year-old President of President Softball Federation of Pakistan left behind his wife, three sons, and a daughter among the bereaved. The Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) released a statement of condolence as well, acknowledging the positive impact that Azeem made on sports, athletes, and institutional levels during his career as a media director and softball official throughout his professional life. "Mr. Arif Saeed, President, POA, and the entire Olympic Family of Pakistan are deeply grieved by the demise of Mr. Asif Azeem, President Softball Federation of Pakistan," The POA statement read. "He will always be remembered for his outstanding contribution to the sports of Softball in Pakistan and International level as well as for the Olympic Movement in Pakistan. The President POA and all the Olympic Family of Pakistan express their grief and sorrow to the bereaved family." Azeem was also serving as the Director of Media Sports DMC South of Karachi. "He was very hard-working," Azeem's long-time friend and the Sports Editor of The Express Tribune Rishad Mahmood added. "He played a key role in popularising the softball game when it was introduced in Pakistan. He was also the media director of POA, and he has worked closely with Special Olympics Pakistan for several years as a media attaché at international and local events. He was also the media person for the Pakistan Blind cricket team. He was one of the few genuine people with a clean character that one could find in not only the field of sports but in any field. He will be missed greatly."
