Omoda 3 Unveiled

WE just witnessed the global unveiling of the Omoda 3, a sporty-looking compact crossover that will be positioned below the Omoda 5 and Omoda 7. Depending on the market, the crossover may also be called the Omoda C3, similar to how the Omoda 5 and 7 are referred to as the C5 and C7, respectively. As you can see from its striking and angular design, the Omoda 3 is clearly aimed at younger buyers, as stated by brand director Roy Xie. In fact, the car was designed by a team of designers with an average age of just 28 years. The design of the Omoda 3 draws inspiration from starships, which explains the sharp creases and angular lines. Some members of the Malaysian media pointed out that the Omoda 3 has certain design cues reminiscent of the Lamborghini Urus, but this writer personally feels it looks more like a sharper Yaris Cross—the world's best-selling model in its segment, particularly from the angular wheel arches. At the front, the Omoda 3 features bold 'OMODA' lettering and slim daytime running lights positioned above a large, gaping section that houses the grille and main headlights. Air intakes are located on either side, adding to its aggressive appearance. Moving to the side, the Omoda 3 sports flush door handles, angular wheel arches, and 19-inch wheels. The pillars and roof are blacked out, giving the car a stylish dual-tone body colour scheme. At the rear, the inverted L-shaped taillights are connected by a light bar on the tailgate, both showcasing a lightning-style effect. The starship theme continues inside, where the Omoda 3 features a 'Starship Cockpit' architecture and ambient lighting that stretches across the dashboard. A few sporty and youthful touches include the fighter jet-inspired push-start button, where you lift a red cover before pressing it. There's also an 'e-sports ecosystem,' which Omoda describes as a 'best-in-class gaming cockpit.' We're not entirely sure what that entails yet, but we're excited to experience and test it out once the car arrives in Malaysia. As for the powertrain, Omoda did not disclose full details during the unveiling. However, we suspect the Omoda 3 will be offered with combustion engine options (petrol and hybrid) as well as a fully electric variant. We will provide updates once more information is available. Following its global launch in October 2025, the Omoda 3 will be introduced in various markets. Do you think this youthful compact crossover will make its way to Malaysia?

Omoda is adding another compact SUV to its line-up

Following on from the recent Omoda 7 news story, the Chinese car maker is also about to unveil a smaller crossover. It will take aim at MG4 and Kia EV3. It was previewed recently in Wuhu, China. Known as Omoda 3, it will officially launch in October and go on sale next year as an EV, a plug-in hybrid or ICE power vehicle. Designed like a compacted Urus, the 4420mm Omoda 3 features angular styling and a sharknose grille. That makes it similar in size to Omoda 5 which will grow in its next generation. Omoda 3 rides on the same T1X platform as the 5, 7 and 9 large SUV. Also sharing the platform are the Jaecoo SUVs, including the 7 compact and new smaller Jaecoo 5. Chery, the company's owner, is aiming for Omoda products to appeal more to younger customers. Omoda 3 features futuristic dashboard digital graphics, a 'starship' noise option and the ability to sync a Nintendo Switch console with the large, portrait touchscreen. Omoda also promises an 'official racing pack' and body wraps. Omoda and Jaecoo are making waves in many parts of the world. In the UK for the first quarter, they outsold Fiat, Citroen, Jeep and Lexus. That happened despite there being only two models on the market to date. More models are coming from the company, with three Chery Tiggo SUVs inbound.

Omoda 7 PHEV another crossover with huge weekend range

The new mid-size Omoda 7 SUV is yet another PHEV to take on the likes of Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Haval H6 GT and Leapmotor C10. Known as Omoda 7 SHS (Super Hybrid System), it goes on sale in the West midyear, ready to take on a host of medium SUV best sellers. The 4.6m Omoda 7 will sit above the Omoda 5, launching with a highly complex grille pattern. Outside that is a set of slimline peepers. Flush door handles and a gently sloping roofline give the family car an athletic profile. Inside is a 15.6-inch central touchscreen that can slide across the dashboard so the front passenger can get a better view. A more sensible alternative to a rotating screen perhaps? Omoda says its '12+2-speaker' sound system offers almost infinite tuning possibilities. It evidently results in a concert hall-like listening experience. Active noise cancellation is included in the set-up. Powering the Omoda 7 is the plug-in hybrid powertrain (Super Hybrid System) that debuted in the Jaecoo 7 SUV. The 18.3kWh lithium-ion battery pack can never run out of power, maximising pure-electric driving capabilities. Acting as a generator is a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine. Overall range on a tank of gas and a full battery is a claimed 1200km. Combined power output for the PHEV set-up is a claimed 250kW. The engine is good for 105kW and 215Nm while the electric motor is up for 150kW an 310Nm. With its moderately sized battery pack, electric range is around 90km (WLTP). Expect the Omoda 7 SHS to undercut its popular rivals on price. If it lands here (and we have asked the question) it will slot in locally beneath its close relative, Jaecoo SHS, which costs $49,990. Overseas, Omoda is also about to release a small crossover known as C3.

New Chinese car brands unveil models including cheaper version of Range Rover Evoque

New Chinese car brands Omoda and Jaecoo – part of China's Chery automotive group – have unveiled a new model each at the Shanghai Motor Show, just a year after their launch in the UK. Jaecoo, the more premium of the two brands, has unveiled the new Jaecoo 5 – a battery electric vehicle that will also be available as a petrol model. The Jaecoo 5 looks like a scaled down version of the Jaecoo 7, a car with a striking resemblance to the Range Rover Velar. So it's no surprise that the car looks very much like the Velar's smaller sibling, the Range Rover Evoque. While the look of the Jaecoo 5 might be like an Evoque, the price won't be – we'd expect it to be around the £35,000 mark. That puts it slightly above the price of the Omoda 5, with which the new Jaecoo shares its tech. That tech sharing means we can expect a 61kWh battery and a range of around 250 miles, making it competitive against some similarly priced rivals, although behind the likes of the new Skoda Elroq and newly crowned World Car of the Year, the Kia EV3. As with the Omoda 5, the Jaecoo 5 is also expected to be available with a 1.6-litre petrol engine with a hybrid also possible in due course. Our guess is that the petrol Jaecoo will cost around £27,450 – putting it between the Omoda 5 petrol and cheapest Jaecoo 7 model. Although the styling of the Jaecoo 5 is very similar to the Jaecoo 7, the front end is slightly more aerodynamic making it look even more like a Range Rover. Inside, the look is very generic with a portrait-orientated touchscreen sat above twin wireless charging pads on the centre console. A second digital display sits in front of the driver. Following a very similar theme, the new Omoda 7 is bigger than the Omoda 5 and shares its tech with the Jaecoo 7. That means a plug-in hybrid system that Omoda calls intelligent super-hybrid technology with a small battery and 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine for a claimed total range of 745 miles on a full tank and full charge. Design-wise, the Omoda 7 looks very much like a slightly stretched version of the Omoda 5, but with additional LED lighting at the front, a more pronounced kick up of the window line towards the back at the side, and a longer rear overhang for a bigger boot. We'd expect the Omoda 7 to be priced just below the Jaecoo 7 that comes with the SHS (Super-Hybrid System) so a starting price of around £32,500. Both the new Jaecoo 5 and Omoda 7 will be in showrooms in August, but they'll be beaten by a new flagship Omoda model that wasn't at the Shanghai Motor Show. The Omoda 9 is already shown on Omoda's website with a starting price of £44,990 for a model that also uses the SHS plug-in hybrid system. Little else is known about the new car other than the price, its claim of 93 miles of EV range, its massive 660-litre boot capacity, 4.7 metre length and 700 mile-plus total range. It can be ordered now in a choice of five colours and is set to arrive before the other newcomers in June of this year.
