Match delayed as England cricketers ride lime bikes to the stadium in London traffic chaos
The final One Day International between England and the West Indies got off to a late start after traffic congestion in London caused chaos to the teams' travel plans. Both sides got stuck on their team buses en route to The Oval in south London on Tuesday, with England's players deciding to get off and ride bikes to the ground instead. Traffic-light failures in the Vauxhall area of London, about 15 minutes from The Oval, were reportedly to blame for the chaos. While they arrived in enough time to conduct a thorough pre-match warm-up under a grey sky, the West Indies players stayed on their bus and arrived at around 12:40 p.m. local time — 10 minutes after the scheduled time for the toss. 'We probably should have walked,' West Indies captain Shai Hope said, laughing. Uncertainty permeated the ground as England players quite laughably warmed up with no opposition in sight for some time, like a scene out of a junior cricket match. 'The toss has been delayed because, basically, we don't have two teams, would you believe it,' Ian Ward explained pre-game. 'We have an England cricket team — we do not have a West Indies cricket team. The traffic in and around The Oval ... all around, is absolutely gridlock.' West Indies stayed overnight at a hotel some five kilometres from The Oval, Britain's PA news agency reported. The toss was delayed by 40 minutes and was won by England, who chose to bowl first in an attempt to take advantage of overcast conditions. The ECB released a statement while waiting for the West Indies to arrive. 'Due to a delayed arrival of one of the playing teams, who are stuck in heavy traffic north of the river, the scheduled start of play will be delayed,' the statement read. 'Once all members of the playing teams arrive, the match officials will co-ordinate updated timings and discuss any impact on the schedule of play.' The match started 30 minutes late. England had already clinched the three-match series after wins in Birmingham and Cardiff.

With the West Indies team stuck on their bus, England's players were seen riding electrically-assisted Lime Bikes well ahead of the scheduled 1300 start time to the amusement of fans waiting to get in. They were warming up on the outfield when the delay was announced to the crowd on a murky day in the capital. "Due to a delayed arrival of one of the playing teams, who are stuck in heavy traffic north of the river, the scheduled start of play will be delayed," an England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) statement said. "Once all members of the playing teams arrive, the match officials will coordinate updated timings and discuss any impact on the schedule of play." Play eventually began at 1330 with England looking to wrap up a 3-0 series win after victories at Edgbaston and Cardiff. Traffic light failures and road closures near Vauxhall Bridge had caused the chaos, with England captain Harry Brook saying they had decided to take matters into their own hands. "We were on the bus for a while, then we all decided to get off and get some Lime bikes in," captain Harry Brook said after winning the toss and opting to bowl. "We were in a little bit earlier than the West Indies boys, but we're here now and ready to go." The West Indies team were staying at nearby Chelsea Harbour, around three miles away. "We probably should have walked," captain Shai Hope said. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Watch: England cricketers arrive at the Oval on Lime bikes
England's cricketers abandoned the team bus and travelled to the Oval by Lime bikes for their One-Day International against West Indies to avoid grid-locked London traffic. The team were travelling from their hotel on Kensington High Street to Kennington, a journey of about four miles, but heavy traffic caused by traffic-light failures in Vauxhall and the closure of Lambeth Bridge meant they chose to alight the bus and seek alternative transport. 'We were on the bus for a while, then we all decided to get off and get some Lime bikes in,' said the captain, Harry Brook. His team, approaching from Vauxhall, cruised round the Harleyford Road in convoy, past confused spectators. England's peloton arrived at the ground in good time, but the match was delayed because the West Indies team bus got caught up in road closures coming from their hotel in Chelsea. 'We probably should have walked,' joked their captain, Shai Hope, after they arrived at 12.40, 20 minutes before the match was due to start. What should have been a 15-minute journey took the better part of two hours. Eventually, the toss was held at 1.10, and the match started 30 minutes late at 1.30pm. The weather was a little mizzly as the game began, meaning there could have been a delayed start anyway. The Trinidadian commentator Ian Bishop said he had walked to the ground after sitting in a stationary cab. England's cricketers have sought interesting transport options in the past. While on tour in New Zealand in December, they used e-scooters to travel from their hotel to the picturesque Hagley Oval in Christchurch. England, who have an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series after a Joe Root masterclass in Cardiff, won the toss and opted to bowl first. After the ODIs are complete, the two teams will play three T20 internationals.

Cricket-Pakistan to play in Colombo when India hosts women's World Cup
FILE PHOTO: Cricket - Women's First One Day International - England v Pakistan - County Ground, Derby, Britain - May 23, 2024 Pakistan's Najiha Alvi reacts with teammates at the end of England's innings Action Images via Reuters/Ed Sykes/File Photo (Reuters) -Pakistan will play all their women's 50-over World Cup matches in Sri Lanka's capital Colombo when India hosts this year's tournament, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Monday. Politically-estranged India and Pakistan, who have not played a bilateral series since 2013, will play their matches in neutral venues when either country hosts an ICC event, the sport's global governing body announced in December. "The venues for the knockouts are dependent on Pakistan qualifying as two alternative venues have been identified for one semi-final and the final," the ICC said. "Colombo will be the venue for the first semi-final and the final only if Pakistan qualify for those stages." Bengaluru, where the tournament will start with India playing in the opening match, will host the final on November 2 if Pakistan are knocked out earlier in the tournament, the ICC added. Bengaluru will also stage the second semi-final on October 30, a day after the first semi-final in Colombo or Guwahati. Visakhapatnam and Indore are the two other host cities for the eight-team tournament. India played all their matches in Dubai when Pakistan hosted the men's Champions Trophy this year, including the final which they won. Both the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Pakistan Super League were suspended last month amid clashes between the two countries following an attack targeting tourists that killed 26 people in Kashmir in April. Matches resumed after a ceasefire was announced. The neutral venue arrangement between the countries will also be in place for the men's T20 World Cup in 2026, which India will co-host with Sri Lanka, and the women's T20 World Cup in 2028 in Pakistan.
