Android Circuit: Samsung Confirms New Foldables, Xiaomi's Strong Growth, OnePlus' Alert Sldier Decision
Taking a look back at this week's news and headlines across the Android world, including Galaxy S25 Edge secrets, Samsung confirms new folding phones, the Pixel 10 Pro's hidden strength, Google Photos' new AI tools, OnePlus' Alert Slider decision, Xiaomi's strong growth, and Gemma 3n is here. Android Circuit is here to remind you of a few of the many discussions around Android in the last seven days. You can also read my weekly digest of Apple news here on Forbes. With Samsung's fashionably thin Galaxy S25 Edge now on sale, the South Korean company continues to market the design and the innovation packed into the 5.8mm deep housing. You have new Gorilla Glass, a two-layer camera housing, a 'hole structure' in the vapor chamber, and more. But it's how they all fit together that is key. "Samsung had to develop a new mounting system for the internal structure of the phone, allowing it to place components with 0.1mm precision. It went through multiple prototypes until the design was just right." (GSM Arena). The Galaxy S25 Edge was the fourth handset shown during January's Galaxy Unpacked event. With its release this week, the decks are cleared for the summer unpacked event, typically reserved for the foldable Z Flip and Z Fold smartphones. Samsung has teased the Flip 7 and Fold 7 this week as part of the One UI 8 beta program: "In its announcement of the One UI 8 beta program, Samsung has confirmed that its 'newest foldables' will be launching 'this Summer.' The aligns with prior rumors of an early July launch date, and is the first time the company has confirmed this expected launch window. Samsung adds that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 will be the first devices to include the stable One UI 8 update, meaning they'll also likely be among the first, if not the first, devices to run Android 16 out of the box." (9to5Google). When they launch later this year, Google will push the new software and capabilities of the Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro smartphones. However, one of the key changes may not be promoted as heavily as the new AI tools announced at the I/O Developer Conference. That change is switching to TSMC for the fabrication of the Tensor Mobile chip for the next three to five years: "The Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro smartphones will be the first to use Tensor chipsets manufactured by TSMC. The Pixel 6 through Pixel 9 families—all designed by Google—were manufactured by Samsung. Many will be on the lookout for unexpected issues when the chipset is rolled out at scale. It's worth noting that TSM will switch the Tensor over to its own 3nm process, which will, by its nature, offer more performance with less demand on battery life." (Forbes). An update to Google Photos is starting to roll out. Over the next month, the updated app should be available for all. It focuses primarily on editing photos and—perhaps unsurprisingly given Google's push into mobile AI—leans heavily into the creative assistance offered by AI: "With this update, Google Photos is expanding the availability of AI-powered automatic framing and text-to-image Reimagine features that debuted on the Pixel 9. The Auto Frame tool, located in the top left of the redesigned editor, suggests different compositions that crop or widen images, using generative AI to fill in any blank spaces. " (The Verge). Since the launch of the OnePlus One, the marquee feature has been (with few exceptions) the physical alert slider, allowing you to turn the ringer on, off or vibrate only by touch alone. As part of a push towards recognising AI in the modern smartphone, OnePlus has announced that the Plus Key will replace the alert slider: '…the Plus Key is a customizable button programmable for various actions like switching sound profiles, launching the camera, initiating translation, or starting recordings. Crucially, the Plus Key also activates AI Plus Mind, a new feature designed to quickly save, catalog, and recall key information found on the screen. This capability marks a major step towards delivering truly personalized AI." (OnePlus). Xiaomi has reported strong Q1 2025 figures, with the company showing a 47 percent year year-on-year growth across the board. The smartphone division has seen significant success as well, as it maintains a global third place with a market share of 14.1 percent: "Xiaomi's smartphone business saw solid growth, with revenue reaching RMB50.6 billion, up 8.9 percent year-over-year, and a gross profit margin of 12.4 percent. The average selling price of smartphones rose 5.8 percent to RMB1,211, setting a new record. Xiaomi shipped 41.8 million smartphones globally, up 3.0 percent, marking the seventh consecutive quarter of growth." (Telecom Lead). Google continues to push ahead with its mobile AI tools. Following a reveal at Google I/O, the latest version of Gemma—an LLM that can run locally on your phone with no external resources required—can be previewed inside Google's AI Edge Gallery: "Gemma 3n can handle audio, text, images, and videos, according to Google. Models efficient enough to run offline and without the need for computing in the cloud have gained steam in the AI community in recent years. Not only are they cheaper to use than large models, but they preserve privacy by eliminating the need to transfer data to a remote data center." (TechCrunch). OnePlus 13s India Launch Price Tipped Once Again: What You Might Have To Pay
Last Updated: OnePlus 13s India launch price is once again making the headlines and the new details from a tipster suggests a higher range. OnePlus 13s India launch is less than a week from now and the device has shown that it has a lot of different elements that will separate it from the OnePlus 13 and 13R models in the series. OnePlus introduced the 13T in China recently and many believed the 13S will be the same device with a new moniker but it seems the features will be tweaked to give it a different impetus. But all eyes will be glued to see how the OnePlus 13s is priced in India, which is again being speculated ahead of the launch. OnePlus 13s launch price in India is likely to start around Rs 55,000 as per the details from a tipster this week. These figures seem to be going one way or the other, and compared to the earlier rumours, the new details seem rather high for the offering. OnePlus 13s India launch price should be close to Rs 50,000 or start at Rs 52,000 and then come further down with the help of bank offers. We won't have to wait that long for the official OnePlus 13s launch details and other specifications with the June 5 event not that far away now. OnePlus 13s Launch Specifications The OnePlus 13s is pegged to be a compact flagship phone that looks to deliver on all fronts without any compromises. is likely to feature a 6.32-inch display which makes it the ideal compact device with powerful credentials. The device is likely to come with a dual rear camera system and one of them could be a telephoto lens. OnePlus should launch the 13s with OxygenOS 15 version out of the box and we hope the brand can offer at least 4 OS upgrades for the device if not more. First Published: May 30, 2025, 11:39 IST

OnePlus' new compact flagship, OnePlus 13s is all set to make its debut in India on 5 June. Ahead of the launch, the Chinese smartphone maker has confirmed a lot of features of the new device, but the mystery around the pricing of new phone has still remained. However, we don't have an update on which storage and RAM variant will this price be for. Notably, OnePlus 13R starts at a price of ₹ 42,999 while the flagship OnePlus 13 starts at a price of ₹ 69,999. Wbile OnePlus 13T launched in China with 12GB RAM/256 GB at a price of CNY 3,399 (which rounds up to around ₹ 40,000) OnePlus 13s is an India exclusively variant which is expected to be a rebranded version of the OnePlus 13T that launched in China last month. Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge review: Super thin, unputdownable and a lot of substance
The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, at 5.8mm in thickness, is the slimmest candy-bar smartphone you can splurge your money on at this point in time. For context, the similar screen size sibling — the Galaxy S25+ — measures 7.3mm. One could always point to the Honor Magic V3 or the Oppo Find N5 foldables, but they measure 4.65mm and 4.21mm respectively, when unfolded. The Tecno Spark Slim, a candy-bar design again, is still a concept that may or may not be made as it's been envisioned. In the here and now, Samsung has well and truly delivered on the slimness aspect. The pertinent question therefore is, must we compromise on something else? The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge is at the bleeding edge of what is possible with smartphones, and plays the dimensions versus specifications balance better than anyone may have expected. In fact, it may be difficult to convey exactly how impressive this combination of a slim and lightweight (163 grams) build is. It has to be held in hand, to get the true sense of the achievement. The only contention really revolves around battery life, which sees a substantial 1000 mAh reduction in capacity, compared with the Galaxy S25+ (3,900 mAh compared with 4,900 mAh). More on that, as we contextualise this with performance. In terms of the underlying specs, there is absolute parity with the rest of the Galaxy S25 range. The 3-nanometer Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite with specific customisations for Samsung, 12GB memory and a 200-megapixel main camera leading the dual-camera setup instead of a troika (a telephoto has been sacrificed). One of my two key concerns (the other being real-world battery stamina) was how this slim chassis handled thermals, and therefore performance. On that front, the Galaxy S25 Edge is as much at par with the Galaxy S25 Ultra as it is with the Galaxy S25+, since there is no extra heating apparent on the back panel and the phone holds performance quite well. Credit to Samsung's redesigned cooling architecture, it has done the job. Specific to the battery capacity is an observation that Samsung isn't using the silicon-carbide battery pack chemistry, something phone makers such as OnePlus are increasingly doing, and the result is smaller, denser batteries that would be ideal for the slimness proposition Samsung is going for with the Galaxy S25 Edge. I had the chance to stress test the battery stamina earlier this month, when covering Google I/O. There was minimal voice calling on roaming, but extensive data usage as well as a lot of camera use, audio recordings and transcriptions along the way. There are software optimisations Samsung has done to make this more frugal, and that does help to an extent. A Galaxy S25 Edge, fully charged in the morning, would dip to a fairly uncomfortable level by around 3pm — anywhere between 20% to 30% charge remaining. Even if you're very careful with usage, a screen time of around 6 hours is perhaps the maximum you'd be able to eke out. That's the comparative, from close to 8 hours on a Galaxy S25 Ultra, when used similarly. You'd need to not be someone who needs a workhorse battery stamina from a smartphone, to consider buying an ultra-slim phone, any ultra-slim phone for that matter. The other aspect to consider is the camera setup. Instead of the three-camera setup that has been typical with Samsung's flagships over the past few years, this makes do with one less sensor. The trade-off is surely to open up some room in the innards. The 200-megapixel primary camera is really as good as it gets. The lack of a telephoto camera is compensated to an extent with the 2x optical zoom on the 200-megapixel camera, going all the way to 10x of AI-assisted zoom. For the latter, performance may vary depending on composition of shot too. If you are using the main sensor for most of your photography, the results are genuinely top-notch, and this I say as someone who's had his share of playing with Hasselblad, Leica and Zeiss optimised cameras in smartphones over the past few months. Colours are rich and well separated, there's just the right amount of sharpness, noise reduction doesn't seem to make an aggressive appearance and you'll like the dynamic range in most photos. Low light scenarios require some patience to get the best possible photos, but that is more a factor of how well you can do it. At this time, the singular price tag for the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge is ₹1,09,999 even though two variants are listed for India — the reason being, for a while, Samsung is upgrading all 256GB storage purchases to the 512GB storage variant. For all intents and purposes, this is the fourth addition to Samsung's flagship Android portfolio, and one that certainly has a unique personality. Yet, and it is a brave thing to do for any smartphone brand, this is targeted at a very specific demographic of potential buyers. Ones who loathe thick, heavy phones even though they'd not want to compromise on the screen size. And secondly, the user base that can work around the slightly lower battery life ceiling. The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge does well to build on the unique thickness and weight proposition, by being a thoroughbred flagship rest of the time. Top notch performance, a 200-megapixel sensor that simply doesn't disappoint with photos, and the whole layer of Samsung's Galaxy AI, all adding value. The thing is, battery compromise aside, you'll begin to find every other Android phone thick and unnecessarily bulky, after getting a taste of the impressively thin 'Edge' design. That is perhaps Samsung's, and indeed the Galaxy S25 Edge's biggest win.
