Hate queuing for the American border on holiday? Soon, you might not have to
Nearly four decades on, a regional operation which amounts to just one terminal and two million passengers per year provides flights to four major American destinations (New York JFK, Newark, Chicago, Boston), with passengers able to have their passports checked prior to take-off. Nor is Shannon a lone example. In total, the USA offers 15 pre-clearance border points. The Irish capital Dublin is also part of the club. So is Bermuda. There are two such facilities in the Caribbean region (Aruba; Nassau in the Bahamas), and nine in Canada (including Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa and Toronto). The United Arab Emirates joined the list in 2014, when a pre-clearance point opened at Zayed International, in Abu Dhabi. Limited developments That inauguration was the most recent. In May 2015, the US Department of Homeland Security announced that a further 10 international airports were being considered for the border pre-clearance scheme, including Heathrow and Manchester, as well as Oslo, Amsterdam, Madrid, Brussels, Istanbul, and Narita International in Tokyo. However, these proposals were unveiled during the second Obama presidency. There have been no major developments or updates under the three subsequent White House administrations. The new short-cuts to Texas and Atlanta are not part of this pre-clearance system. They mainly apply to customs checks, coming under the umbrella of a pilot programme called 'One Stop Security'. And for now, they are limited to specific airlines and named routes. The Dallas-Fort Worth short-cut applies to travellers flying with American Airlines from Heathrow (Flight AA51), and is open to passengers who are connecting to a further flight in Texas. The main convenience is that clearing customs in London means they will not have to collect their bags when they land, and check them in for a second time before flying onwards – which is currently the standard requirement for all arrivals in the USA. They can simply continue to their connecting aircraft, knowing their luggage will follow. The Atlanta short-cut is even more restricted in scope. It is only applicable to passengers who are travelling from Heathrow to Hartsfield–Jackson International with Delta Air Lines (Flight DL33). Furthermore, it is only open to travellers who are registered with America's Global Entry system – or those who have the 'Mobile Passport Control' app on their phones. The latter is only available to US citizens and legal permanent residents. In other words, those dreaming of an end to the seemingly interminable wait at JFK or LAX will have to… wait a little longer. But with important eyes keeping a close watch on the effectiveness of the Dallas and Atlanta routes, and American Airlines speaking of its 'plans to explore' a widening of the programme to further cities, there may yet be a simplification of the stop-start queuing that has come to define a touch-down in America.

Airlines to allow certain passengers to skip customs security checkpoint for faster travel — here's who will benefit
International travel is getting easier for some passengers. American Airlines has partnered with the Transportation Security Administration to pilot a new program that allows some international travelers to skip the usual TSA and customs rescreenings. The first-of-its-kind program, known as One Stop Security, will allow passengers to go directly to their connecting flight after landing from abroad without reclaiming and rechecking their checked luggage, which will be automatically transferred to the connecting flight. Per a Fox News report, Delta Airlines is expected to follow with its own trial beginning Wednesday, July 30, for passengers flying from London Heathrow to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. OSS is expected to streamline the travel experience by 'leveraging advanced technology' to cut connection times by more than half, which typically includes clearing US Customs, claiming checked bags, rechecking bags and then clearing TSA security. 'One Stop Security is one of the most forward-thinking enhancements we can bring to international travel — and importantly, to our customers — as it delivers a level of convenience and time-savings that's never been available before to customers connecting from international flights,' David Seymour, chief operating officer at American, said in a statement. 'With this game-changing program and thanks to our federal partners at CBP and TSA, along with DFW Airport, our customers will spend significantly less time worrying about an onerous connection process and more time enjoying their travel journey.' The program is currently being tested through AA's largest hub, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, and only with flights arriving from London Heathrow Airport. Travelers traveling from London and connecting through Dallas will be able to clear customs right at the arrival gate. American is the first airline to implement OSS at a US airport and 'plans to explore opportunities to expand' the service to additional flights and airports in the future. 'One Stop Security is a smart, long-overdue step toward modernizing the travel experience, eliminating redundant screening, cutting connection times and unlocking more international air service,' US Travel President and CEO Geoff Freeman said in a separate statement. Connection times to be cut ‘by more than half' via new security rules for London-US flights
Travellers on connecting flights from London to the US will soon be able to avoid rechecking hold luggage and skip standard airport customs. Starting this month, US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) pilot programme One Stop Security (OSS) plans to streamline terminal security steps to speed up connections for air passengers. Some American Airlines passengers flying from London Heathrow airport with connecting journeys through Dallas Fort Worth International (DFW) will now be able to clear US Customs at the arrival gate. From here, customers can directly board their connecting flight without reclaiming and rechecking hold luggage or clearing TSA security. Typically, travellers must clear customs, claim checked bags, recheck bags and then again go through security. With OSS, checked bags are automatically transferred to the connecting flight. The pilot system is a partnership of the TSA, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the UK Department for Transport (DfT). According to American Airlines, the new process is expected to cut airport connection times by 'more than half'. American is the first US airline to pilot the scheme on select routes at DFW. Some Delta passengers are also trialling OSS on routes from Heathrow to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Travellers with Delta will be processed in a dedicated customs area and will not have to claim and recheck their bags. However, only those who are registered in Global Entry, a 'trusted traveller programme', or have the Mobile Passport Control app, will be able to bypass TSA screening, reported the NY Times. To apply for Global Entry, British passengers are required to apply for a background check by the UK government (£42), then the US government (£90). Upon passing, passengers are subject to an in-person interview. Once completed, Global Entry is valid for five years. The introduction of the security system in the US follows a successful pilot in February for travellers connecting to international destinations from London Heathrow. David Seymour, COO at American Airlines, said: 'One Stop Security is one of the most forward-thinking enhancements we can bring to international travel — and importantly, to our customers — as it delivers a level of convenience and time-savings that's never been available before to customers connecting from international flights. 'Customers will spend significantly less time worrying about an onerous connection process and more time enjoying their travel journey.' TSA deputy administrator Adam Stahl told Fox News Digital that OSS could be expanded to other airports in the next month. He said: 'It really is a common sense security approach for us to streamline security from abroad to the United States.'

American Airlines will let some passengers skip the customs line at this airport
Travelers connecting from the United Kingdom through American Airlines' main hub in Dallas will now have a much smoother travel experience. American is piloting a one-stop security program that lets connecting passengers clear customs at the gate and not need to have their bags re-screened before proceeding to another flight in Dallas. "One Stop Security is one of the most forward-thinking enhancements we can bring to international travel – and importantly, to our customers – as it delivers a level of convenience and time-savings that's never been available before to customers connecting from international flights," David Seymour, American's Chief Operating Officer, said in a statement. "With this game-changing program and thanks to our federal partners at (Customs and Border Protection) and (the Transportation Security Administration), along with (Dallas Fort Worth) Airport, our customers will spend significantly less time worrying about an onerous connection process and more time enjoying their travel journey,' he said. The airline expects the program to reduce connection times for eligible passengers by more than half. For now, the program is only a pilot available to passengers departing London Heathrow and connecting to American Airlines flights at DFW, but the airline said it "plans to explore opportunities to expand OSS to additional flights and U.S. airports in the future." American Airlines announced a similar program at London's Heathrow Airport in February, where passengers departing DFW and connecting onto international (non-U.K.) flights could avoid going through security re-screening in London.
