Calandagan rules supreme for France in King George
Francis-Henri Graffard's gelding was bidding to keep the trophy in the Chantilly yard after Goliath prevailed 12 months ago, with his key rival seemingly Aidan O'Brien's Coronation Cup winner Jan Brueghel, who had edged the Aga Khan Studs-owned four-year-old at Epsom. Calandagan was the well-backed 11-10 favourite to turn the tables and after an incredibly patient ride from Mickael Barzalona he swept through to pick off all of his rivals and pass the gallant Kalpana ahead of the line for a one-length triumph. It is the fifth time the race has been won by a horse carrying the green and red silks, with Shergar the most famous of the those winners after prevailing for the fourth Aga Khan, who died in February this year at the age of 88. 'When the filly (Kalpana) kicked on for home my horse was still travelling well, I was hoping he was going to catch her at the end. He lengthened so strongly, he's a very good horse. 'I wanted to see my horse getting into his rhythm and lengthening his stride, when I really saw him coming I started to shout. 'He won nicely again today, he's a good horse, that's two in row now in Group Ones. 'Mickael knows him very well and he has a lot confidence in the horse. You saw the ride he gave him, he had a lot of confidence and he won – we are so happy.'

Jimmy Barnes opens up about terrifying health scare: ‘If we have nine lives, I've used up at least seven'
If a near-death experience re-defines a person's life, rock music legend Jimmy Barnes has had multiple re-definitions. He's survived years of drug and alcohol addiction, countless health emergencies, and the open-heart surgery (his second) he endured 18 months ago. Barnes has famously stared death in the face and won. Again and again. 'I've confronted death a few times,' he laughed. 'But normally it's sort of self-inflicted.' 'If we have nine lives, I've used up at least seven.' Now the 69-year-old swears he will treat his final two with far more respect. Barnes has taken time out of his busy concert schedule to speak with 7News in an exclusive backstage interview before the Sydney show. He's nearing the end of his sell-out 'Defiant Tour' – his first solo tour since that near-death moment in December 2023. The man who could be described as the heart of Australian rock and roll, had suffered a savage bacterial infection of the heart. It came after complications from a hip replacement. Barnes has just about toured more hospital wards than concert venues in those 18 months – and he was glad to back on stage. And the Sydney gig was special: in the audience are the medical team from St Vincent's Hospital that saved his life. 'They're coming along to see how their little handiwork went,' he laughs. 'They saved my life. So, you know, I'm forever grateful.' So are his fans. Defiant shot to the top of the ARIA charts this month, his 16th Number One album. His publicity team says that's two more Number Ones than The Beatles, and three more than Taylor Swift. 'How lucky am I? It's extraordinary, isn't it? I don't take it for granted,' he said. 'When I think that, you know, joining Cold Chisel 50 odd years ago, 16-years-old and thinking, will we make a living? How long will the band be going? And to be doing this this long afterwards, and we're still having people turn up. It's a blessed life.' His life now is in a very different place to that teenager's but it's still driven by the same dream: to make music. But in December 2023, he and his wife genuinely believed that run of luck had come to its end. 'I literally turned to Jane and said, 'I think this might be it. I think it might have caught me finally'.' He revealed that he actually made preparations for the worst. 'I did do a lot of that,' he said. And as he lay in his hospital bed, he was writing music with a message that held the hint of a farewell. 'I've sort of changed the way I wrote the songs I wrote,' he admitted. 'And I'm letting everybody I know that I love them, know that I've had the best life, you know.' Surviving that has changed everything about his life. 'Well, I'm healthier'' he says. 'If I want to enjoy my family and the life that I've built and I want to continue to make music and be relevant and bring joy to people, I've got to stay fit, I've got to be healthy, I've got to be focused.' 'These days, I appreciate every single day, every step I take.' He still performs at 110 per cent and 120 decibels. His face looks ready to explode and he belts the lyrics to the back of the hall in that traditional 'Barnestorming' way. And he refuses to change or slow the pace. 'It's like having primal therapy every night. Your pain, your fears, your love, your anger - all in an hour and a half on stage - and you can walk away and say, 'I'm okay now'.' His next major milestone will be his 70th birthday next April. Any advice for those of us coming after him? 'I think you can always get better,' he says. 'I honestly believe the more focused I am, the more I look after myself, the more I open up to the people around me and listen to them, the better I get.' He insists he's heading into the best years of his life – as a husband, father, grandfather and musician. 'I think I'll be performing until I drop. Defiant,' he declares. 'I am defiant.'

Disney Fails to Halt YouTube From Poaching Key Executive Ahead of Licensing Renewal Talks
Disney's bid to temporarily block YouTube's hiring of Justin Connolly in a newly created role as global head of media and sports has been denied. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge James Chalfant on Wednesday concluded that Disney is unlikely to prevail on claims that YouTube illegally poached Connolly in violation of his contract with the entertainment giant. It sought a temporary restraining order to prevent him from starting at the Google-owned company, claiming that he could leak confidential information or trade secrets belonging to Disney ahead of a licensing renewal with YouTube. In a court filing, YouTube argued that the order Disney seeks for Connolly to return to the company against his will or quit his new position is prohibited under California law. It stressed that Disney knew for over six weeks that he intended to leave Disney to join YouTube, meaning there's no emergency for the court to issue a temporary restraining order. Connolly has been working for YouTube for roughly two weeks. In discussions, Disney maintained that Connolly couldn't work for YouTube because he had a three-year fixed term contract that hadn't expired, according to a court document. It offered to release him from his contract following the renegotiation of their licensing deal. 'We are disappointed in today's ruling, but will continue to pursue our legal remedies,' said a Disney spokesperson in a statement. YouTube declined to comment. Mercedes-AMG One Catches Fire Again, Raises Safety Questions
$3M Mercedes-AMG One Catches Fire in Viral Video Priced at close to $3 million and limited to a planned 275 units, the Mercedes-AMG One hybrid hypercar is as exclusive as it gets, which is why the mere thought of one being damaged or lost is traumatic. Unfortunately, a new video has surfaced online of an AMG One burning to the ground. The clip was shared by user Chrimbu on social media, but no details were provided as to exactly where or how the blaze started. The fire does not appear to have been caused by an accident, though, which suggests the car unexpectedly caught alight. Complex Hybrid Powertrain To Blame? The extensively electrified powertrain of the AMG One isn't going to reduce the intensity of a fire. Besides the 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 engine, the One also features four electric motors and an 8.4-kWh lithium-ion battery. When exposed to extreme temperatures, lithium-ion batteries can result in thermal runaway. According to UL Research Institutes, this process causes the lithium-ion cell to enter a self-heating state that is difficult to stop. Furthermore, it makes it more challenging to extinguish such a fire. There's no way of knowing if the AMG One's powertrain caused the fire we see here, but it's likely that the battery and associated components further fueled the flames. When it's not lighting up the sky, the AMG One's performance is pretty hot, with the hypercar capable of a 0-62 mph sprint time of 2.9 seconds. It will reach around 218 mph, too. Not The First AMG One To Catch Alight Almost exactly two years ago, The Sun reported on another AMG One that was burned to a crisp. Allegedly, this one was being towed in Staffordshire, England, when it burst into flames. The fact that the car was switched off and being towed at the time makes this an especially bizarre event. 'We are aware of this incident involving a car that was being transported in a closed trailer as part of its assembly process,' said a spokesperson for Mercedes at the time. As one of AMG's most ambitious projects ever, Mercedes faced a number of hurdles in developing the hypercar. Ola Kallenius, Mercedes-Benz CEO, once even joked that the board must surely have been 'drunk' when it was decided to forge ahead with the car. Adapting the F1 powertrain for use on the street was one of the biggest challenges, and considering how long it took to get everything right, it's all the more disheartening that at least two Ones have been destroyed. Source: Mercedes-AMG Is The AMG One A Fire Risk? While hybrid and EV naysayers may be quick to point at the elevated fire risks of electrified cars, it's impossible to know for sure if this is an inherent flaw in the AMG hypercar. Certainly, two burned cars will raise eyebrows – especially since this is one of the most expensive cars in the world – but these could be entirely isolated incidents that have nothing to do with each other. Presently, no known recalls have been issued for the AMG One, nor have any known injuries occurred as a result of these fires. All we're left with, then, are two enormous insurance claims and a hypercar world deprived of two spectacular track toys.
