Data breach of patient info reported at Miami-area hospital. What to know

Patients who received care at Baptist Health South Florida may have had their personal data, including names, Social Security numbers and medical information, accessed in a breach that impacted one of the hospital system's vendors. Baptist, in a letter recently sent to patients, said an 'unauthorized third party gained access to and obtained data that was maintained' by Oracle Health, an electronic health record vendor formerly known as Cerner. Oracle Health's investigation determined its systems 'may have been compromised as early as January 22, 2025, affecting the information of many health care providers, including Baptist Health,' the hospital told the Miami Herald in a statement Tuesday. That information may have included names, Social Security numbers and details found 'within patient medical records, such as medical record numbers, doctors, diagnoses, medicines, test results, images, care and treatment,' according to the letter, which was obtained by the Herald. Health records are private under a federal law known as HIPAA, or the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. But they are increasingly being targeted in healthcare hacks. Last year, the country reported a record-breaking number of breached healthcare records, with many breaches linked to hacking and ransomware attacks, according to the HIPAA Journal, which has compiled healthcare data breach statistics for more than a decade. Baptist did not say how many of its patients may have been affected in the breach. The Herald has contacted Oracle Health to learn more about the breach, including how many patients may be affected and if any other South Florida healthcare provider was affected. Baptist said it was notified of the breach on March 7 but held off on notifying patients until late July, upon the request of federal law enforcement. Baptist said the breach did not impact its own computer systems. Third-party vendor Cerner, which was acquired by software maker Oracle in 2022 and is now known as Oracle Health, has taken steps to secure its systems and is working with external cybersecurity specialists and federal law enforcement in an investigation, according to the letter sent to Baptist patients. This is the latest healthcare-related breach to affect South Florida patients as healthcare hacks become more common. In June, more than 2,000 patients at Jackson Health System were notified that their personal data, including names, addresses and medical information, but not Social Security numbers, were accessed in a lengthy breach that spanned nearly five years. Jackson said the breach was conducted by an employee who accessed the information to promote a personal healthcare business. No arrests have been announced yet. As for this latest breach, potentially impacted Baptist patients should have received — or will soon receive — a notice about the breach, including information on how to enroll in free credit monitoring services with credit bureau Experian. 'Individuals who have questions about the event may contact 833-931-5335 and provide engagement number B149213,' reads Baptist statement. 'We sincerely apologize for this incident. Protecting patient information remains a top priority for Baptist Health.'

Patterson Health Center adopts Oracle solution to enhance care

Patterson Health Center (PHC) in the US has adopted Oracle Health CommunityWorks to improve efficiency in its financial and clinical operations, aiming to enhance patient care in rural communities of Kansas. The system's implementation, along with Oracle Health Clinical AI Agent, is set to reduce administrative workload, allowing care providers to dedicate more time to patient interaction. PHC's initiative is a strategic move to broaden access to care in underserved areas and bolster patient care in the community it serves. The critical access hospital and emergency centre sought to extend its service offerings and optimise operational efficiency. The implementation of Oracle Health CommunityWorks has automated clinical and financial tasks, enhancing care coordination and benefitting local patients. Patterson Health Center CEO Sarah Teaff said: 'With Oracle Health technology, we can collaborate across care venues to provide excellent health and wellness services and foster a healthier future for our community while using AI to automate tedious clinical documentation processes to enhance our clinicians' experiences.' Oracle Health CommunityWorks has introduced a patient portal at PHC, simplifying communication regarding appointments and surgeries. This has reduced wait times and facilitated collaboration with external providers, promoting continuity of care. Additionally, PHC has established an integrated digital patient record that connects clinical interactions with billing processes, enhancing financial transparency and increasing reimbursements. The Oracle Health Clinical AI Agent, integrated into the electronic health record (EHR) system, generates structured draft notes automatically from interactions between the patient and physician. This reduces redundancy and organises content for convenient review, streamlining documentation and contributing to care efficiencies. Such automation cuts down the manual work that leads to provider burnout. Last month, Fortify Children's Health adopted Oracle Health Data Intelligence to improve care quality to its paediatric patients. "Patterson Health Center adopts Oracle solution to enhance care" was originally created and published by Hospital Management, a GlobalData owned brand. Oracle, Cleveland Clinic And The UAE's G42 Are Developing A Health AI Platform— Here's What We Know

Technology companies are rapidly investing in AI capabilities. Last week, Oracle Health, Cleveland Clinic and G42, a cloud computing and AI development company based in the United Arab Emirates, announced a partnership to co-develop and launch an AI based healthcare analytics and clinical intelligence platform. The initial goals for the platform will be to: Though the details are still being ironed out on how the above and more will be executed, the overall vision is to provide a platform through which AI can be leveraged to ultimately improve societal health outcomes. The partnership brings together three powerhouses in this space. Oracle Health has grown significantly in the past few years, especially with its renewed commitment to become a leader in the AI race. Since its purchase of Cerner in 2021, the company has doubled down on its healthcare ambitions, specifically to leverage its decades-long experience in building enterprise grade software solutions and data warehousing capabilities to ultimately modernize digital health infrastructure. Cleveland Clinic has become a household name in the fields of cutting-edge clinical research and care delivery. In the United States, the institution is known for providing world-class care for some of the rarest diseases and conditions. It also opened a campus in Abu Dhabi in 2006 with the goal of bringing world-class clinical care to the UAE. In this partnership, the institution will provide the clinical and care model expertise to build out the larger platform. Finally, G42 is an Emirati artificial intelligence company, known for its deep investments and involvement in AI projects across a variety of sectors, ranging from healthcare and finance to the oil, gas and hospitality industries. Notably, the chairman of the company is Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan, son of the founder of the UAE and a stalwart in the technology landscape. These three forces coming together certainly bodes a promising outcome for this venture. Larry Ellison, executive chairman and CTO of Oracle explained that the increasingly complex healthcare landscape requires rethinking the delivery of care; 'Together with Cleveland Clinic and G42, we will deliver the modern tools providers need to help people live longer, healthier lives.' Morton C. Mandel, CEO of Cleveland Clinic, adds: 'An AI-enabled model of care could positively impact global health systems—a flagship example of how data-driven, tech-powered healthcare can deliver better outcomes, lower costs, and expand access worldwide.' This partnership is running parallel to the other significant announcements in the AI investment space recently. Specifically, President Trump's landmark tour of the Middle East last week resulted in significant partnership and deal announcements, including a broader commitment by the UAE for a $1.4 trillion investment to support the building of U.S. AI infrastructure and data centers. Though more details are forthcoming, the track record of each of these parties separately is well-established. Together, their union will hopefully mold an effective and impactful means to meaningfully improve health outcomes.
