Laverne Cox Hails Orange Is The New Black For Changing Trans Narratives: 'Never Seen Anything…'

Laverne Cox believes Orange Is the New Black changed the narrative about trans people. She expressed pride in her role as Sophia Burset. Laverne Cox thinks Orange Is the New Black has helped to change the 'narrative with and about trans people". The 53-year-old actress rose to prominence as Sophia Burset on Orange Is the New Black, becoming the first transgender person to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in an acting category, and Laverne feels very proud of the hit Netflix show. She told Extra: 'When Orange happened, I was in such bliss because I just loved telling the story. I had never seen anything on TV like that before. I also knew that if I was going to have the mainstream career no other trans person has had … We needed to change the narrative with and about trans people." Asked what has impressed her the most about her own life journey, Laverne replied: 'That I'm still here … For me, it's about the lessons that I've learned." Laverne previously argued that being a black transgender woman has limited her opportunities as an actress. The Orange Is The New Black star believes she's been overlooked for certain roles because of her profile – but Laverne thinks the landscape is improving and she still considers herself to be 'blessed". She said: 'Two years ago … I was in the waiting room with actresses who were like, 'Oh my God, this is my fourth audition today.' And I was like, 'Oh, I've never auditioned that much.' There have never been that many parts as a black, openly transgender woman. Because I am who I am, there probably have been fewer opportunities for me to work. I feel like we've made the very most of what we have been given … I feel very blessed now." However, Laverne is now determined to make the most of her platform by campaigning for certain demographics to be better represented in Hollywood. She explained, 'Certainly there are fewer opportunities for someone like me being black and being trans and being a woman. In the face of that, it's not bad. The truth is I'm one of the lucky ones. The question for me becomes … as I produce, how to bring other people along for the ride." First Published: July 27, 2025, 17:22 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Laverne Cox Defends Past Relationship With ‘MAGA Republican' Cop After Intense Backlash

Laverne Cox is sharing more details about her former 'MAGA Republican voter' boyfriend just days after news of the relationship drew backlash from fans. The Emmy-winning actor, who is transgender, made the eyebrow-raising comment about her ex while promoting her forthcoming live show, 'Gurrl, How Did I Get Here?' set to take place in New York next week. Though Cox didn't identify the man by name, she described him in a short Instagram video as 'blond-haired, blue-eyed MAGA Republican voter who is a New York City police officer,' later boasting he was 21 years her junior and 'hot.' 'We were madly in love,' she said in the clip, posted Monday. 'I did not develop any of his politics. I still have my own.' Cox appears to have previously alluded to the relationship in interviews where she spoke about a breakup with a former partner who wasn't 'aligned with my values.' Still, it wasn't long before the 'Orange Is the New Black' and 'Inventing Anna' actor's Instagram post was flooded with negative responses from followers who called her out for being hypocritical. 'You are able to look past the fact that someone voted against your community and basically everything you represent…?' one person wrote. 'I don't get the punch line… nor does this entice me to want to go to a show to figure out how you justify this.' Added another, 'Sooooo the morals are dismissed when he's hot. Got it.' Cox attempted to clarify her comments in a followup video posted to Instagram Tuesday, noting she hadn't anticipated the criticism. 'I never adapted any of my ex's politics,' she explained in the roughly 50-minute clip. 'I always challenged him with love and empathy and tried to listen to his perspectives, often corrected him with facts, and I wanted to see if it possible to have a relationship with someone with different political beliefs in theory.' Though she warned against 'dehumanizing' those with different views, she went on to note, 'I think, with this current administration, lines certainly have to be drawn, because we're fighting for our lives in a different way than we were five years ago.' 'Everything Trump is doing, I'm against,' she said. Though Cox publicly backed former Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, her latest comments about her ex coincide with a new interview in which she offered a less-than-complimentary take on Harris' campaign. 'The way you win an election is turning out the base,' she told Ts Madison on her 'Outlaws' podcast last week. 'Trump turned out his base. The white supremacists who hadn't voted for years, they got up and they got out and the voted. She needed to turn out the base, but she needed to do it with a message that resonated with people that made them feel like she understood what working people are going through.' Related... Virgin River season 7 set for 'major format change' as Netflix makes huge shake-up

Virgin River fans will see a shift in the story Netflix has revealed that season seven of Virgin River is going to see some big changes, reports the Daily Express. The forthcoming outing, which recently wrapped filming, was mostly filmed in Vancouver, Canada with a pitstop in Mexico - a detail which is likely to raise eyebrows about what's really going on. ‌ Given the show is called Virgin River and set in the titular location, and its surrounding areas, it's going to be something of a change. ‌ The romantic drama has rarely departed from its location and it's not clear why there's been a shift, however, it could be that newlyweds Jack Sheridan (played by Martin Henderson) and Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) are honeymooning down south of the border. But this visit to Mexico could also see some more twists and turns thrown in the show, which is known for its fair share of drama. Get Netflix free with Sky from £15 Sky Get the deal here Product Description Netflix previously teased some details about the upcoming episodes, with Virgin River showrunner Patrick Sean Smith saying: 'Season seven will find Mel and Jack taking their first steps into marriage as they start to plan for and build a life and family together. 'Meanwhile, Doc and Hope will work together to protect the clinic and the integrity of the town from outsiders.' ‌ This begs the question of who these outsiders will be and if they're coming from Mexico or somewhere closer to home. In amongst this, the new season will see Jack and Mel taking their next steps as a married couple as they hope to start a family. They were left in limbo after it looked like they could finally become parents after much heartbreak, including Mel suffering a baby loss. ‌ Despite being in the honeymoon phase as newlyweds, the pair will face obstacles as they run the farm together. Moreover, new faces will be joining the cast for season seven, including The Vampire Diaries' Sara Canning as former police officer Victoria, who was shot in the line of duty and is now serving as an investigator for the state medical board. ‌ Another new addition to Virgin River is Riverdale and Daybreak's Cody Kearsley as Clay, a rough-around-the-edges young man who's worked the rodeo circuit in the past. Clay and his younger sister grew up in foster care, but he's not seen her since they were teens and he'll be desperately trying to find her. Many of the major cast members will be reprising their roles, including Tim Matheson, Annette O'Toole, Colin Lawrence, Benjamin Hollingsworth, Zibby Allen, Sarah Dugdale, Marco Grazzini, Kai Bradbury, and Kandyse McClure. ‌ The Mexico filming news comes after Netflix announced the fate of beloved series, confirming it's been renewed for season eight, ahead of its seventh series premiere. Virgin River has become the streaming platform's longest-running, live-action scripted series, outlasting the likes of both Orange Is The New Black and Grace and Frankie. ‌ In a statement to Netflix's Tudum, Smith said: "On behalf of myself and the whole Virgin River family, we're eternally grateful to Netflix and to the fans for allowing us to continue on this journey with these beloved characters.' Season eight will comprise of another 10 episodes, so fans have plenty of twists and turns to look forward to. There's going to be a wait for season eight, given the seventh series only just finished filming and is going to be going into post-production. ‌ Sadly, season seven doesn't have a release date as yet, with Breckenridge previously posting an Instagram poll asking followers to speculate on whether the show would premiere in 2025 or not. She also shared a cryptic video in which she showed off her costume, suggesting Mel would be getting back to nursing again. Virgin River first premiered pre-pandemic back in 2019, loosely based on the novels by Robin Carr, The show has gone on to become a smash hit thanks to its sweet and gripping storylines, carving out its own storylines away from the source material.

Virgin River breaks records as Netflix issues huge update on show's future

Netflix has dropped a major update about the future of the long-running series Netflix's Virgin River has set a new record as the platform's longest-running scripted series as the streaming giant confirmed the show's future. The much-anticipated seventh series has wrapped up production, following a brief stint in Mexico after concluding filming in Vancouver last month. ‌ Before even setting a premiere date for the seventh season, Netflix has now greenlit an eighth series, signalling more tales from Virgin River are on the horizon. ‌ Deadline has reported that this milestone positions Virgin River as Netflix's most enduring "live-action scripted series", outlasting the likes of Grace and Frankie and Orange Is The New Black. The beloved romantic drama also edges out Elite, another teen drama which spanned eight series but will boast 84 episodes against the latter's 64, reports the Mirror US. Since Netflix began publishing its weekly Top 10 lists in 2021, Virgin River has consistently made the Global Top 10 English TV List 30 times, amassing over 140 million views. Following its release, the sixth season held the top spot in the English TV category for four consecutive weeks and remained on the Nielsen Top 10 list for 38 weeks. ‌ While it's too soon to predict the release date for Virgin River season eight, there's still no word on when the seventh series will air. Notably absent from Netflix's 2025 schedule released in January, fans may have to wait until at least December 2025 for the show's return. When Virgin River makes its anticipated return, fans can expect to see Mel (portrayed by Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson) basking in their "honeymoon phase" following their nuptials in series six. It's rumoured that the duo's final days on set were spent in Mexico as opposed to Vancouver, likely due to the romantic setting required for their scenes. ‌ Beyond the couple's blissful moments, the seventh series is poised to tackle a number of unresolved plots. These may delve into the consequences of Charmaine's (Lauren Hammersley) vanishing act post-wedding, the potential adoption saga involving Marley's (Rachel Drance) child, and the entangled affections between Brie (Zibby Allen), Brady (Ben Hollingsworth), and Mike (Marco Grazzini).
