Oman is An Ornithologist's Paradise

As someone who has harboured a lifelong passion for birdwatching, Oman represents one of the most remarkable ornithological destinations on earth. Back in England, we birdwatchers are affectionately known as 'Twitchers', a term whose origin remains a mystery to me, though it perfectly captures the excitement that courses through us when spotting a rare species. Oman's avifauna is truly extraordinary, with a total of 556 species recorded, making it a treasure trove for anyone passionate about birds. This incredible diversity stems from the country's unique position at the crossroads of Africa, Asia and Europe, combined with its varied landscapes ranging from coastal plains and desert oases to mountainous regions and monsoon-fed southern areas. During the summer months in Oman, I'm treated to a spectacular display right from my bedroom balcony. A small group of Bee Eaters regularly perches on my balcony wall, creating a living rainbow with their brilliant plumage. These magnificent birds have a beautiful array of colours – emerald greens, sapphire blues, golden yellows and rich rust-reds that shimmer in the sun. Their hunting technique is worth watching: they zoom down with incredible precision to snatch a bee from the air, then return to their perch to methodically beat their prey against my balcony wall before swallowing it whole. This behaviour removes the bee's stinger. The contrast between birdwatching in England and Oman couldn't be more striking. In the UK we Twitchers will eagerly travel a hundred miles or more for the mere chance of glimpsing an Osprey, a bird so rare and magnificent that its appearance generates excitement throughout the birding community. These large hawks are slender, with long, narrow wings and long legs. Ospreys fly with a marked kink in their wings, making an M-shape when seen from below. I was astounded to spot an Osprey during a visit to the Al Mouj Golf Course, watching in awe as it performed its spectacular fishing dive, plunging into the sea with deadly accuracy to emerge triumphant with a silvery fish clutched in its talons. The Marsh Harrier, another species considered rare in England, regularly graces the skies above my home in Oman. Their distinctive loud shrieking calls announce their presence as they soar overhead, hunting for prey with their keen eyes and impressive aerial manoeuvres. What would be a red- letter day for any British birdwatcher has become a part of my daily routine in Oman. Driving along November 18th Street has become an unexpected birding adventure, where I frequently spot magnificent raptors that would be the highlight of any European birding expedition. Spotted Eagles, with their broad wings and distinctive plumage patterns, are regular sights during these journeys. One particularly memorable encounter occurred at dusk when a Barn Owl swept across the sky just ten metres above me, its ghostly white form cutting through the evening air silently. My garden has become a natural aviary, particularly enchanting when the brilliantly bright Arabian Purple Sunbird darts from flower to flower. These tiny gems move with hummingbird-like agility, their iridescent plumage catching the light as they probe deep into blossoms for nectar. When I first saw one I thought it was a hummingbird because watching them feed is like observing a hummingbird dancing amongst the flowers. I saw one only yesterday. There are approximately one hundred different coloured Sunbirds. Oman's natural heritage extends far beyond its remarkable bird life, encompassing creatures that I find beautiful rather than frightening. I particularly enjoy picking up and holding a tiny gecko. They have remarkably large eyes and the beneficial habit of consuming those pesky mosquitoes. While many Omanis remain inexplicably fearful of these harmless creatures, I find them charming. Oman's snake population is largely harmless, though sadly many people's first instinct is to kill these magnificent creatures rather than carefully relocating them to their natural habitat. The late His Majesty Sultan Qaboos was renowned for his deep love of all animals, and his compassionate philosophy has helped create an environment where Oman's diverse wildlife can flourish. As we observe and appreciate Oman's wildlife, it's important to remember that we and they are all God's creatures, deserving of respect and protection. Rather than fearing or destroying the wildlife that shares our environment, we should cherish these living treasures that make Oman such an extraordinary ornithologist's paradise. So the next time you walk near trees look up at the sky and you might be lucky enough to see an Omani Indian Roller. It has unmistakably striking blue colours in flight and is not uncommon. The bird is a resident of Oman, not a migrant, meaning it stays here year-round, though it may be more common in winter than summer.

Major change kicks in for EVERY driveway in England ‘to save months of delays and cut costs'

A MAJOR rule change has come for drivers around the UK in a positive move for home and vehicle owners. The change involves the installation of electric vehicle (EV) chargers for both public and private use. 2 2 There is a current target to install 300,000 chargers across the UK by 2030, a goal set out by the previous Conservative government. From this week, those wanting to install an EV charger will no longer require planning permission from a local authority. The new move by Labour is expected to save driver £1,100 a year, as well as months of delays. Liberty to install EV chargers was already the case for most on a private property with off-street parking. But for larger public developments, a green light from local authorities was required. CEO of charger provider Osprey, Ian Johnston, told Autocar last year: "The problem is you've got to go through a process which is under-resourced and takes six to nine months to get planning permission.' The process has been deemed a key bottleneck in the roll-out of the nation's EV and charging network. The Future of Roads Minister, Lilian Greenwood, said: "We're cutting down on paperwork to power up the EV revolution so that drivers, businesses and those looking to make the switch will have more charge points to power from and less red tape to deal with." These rule changes hope to help the "EV revolution" by what Ms Greenwood considers making it "easier than ever to install EV chargers" for EV drivers across the UK. The Labour MP continued: "We continue to make the switch to EVs easier, cheaper and better by investing over £2.3billion to support drivers and back British carmakers through international trade deals - creating jobs, boosting investment and securing our future as part of our Plan for Change." Audi launches NEW superfast charging hybrid with eye-watering price Operations Director at Osprey Charging Network, Lewis Gardiner welcomed the government's "practical change" in policy which he believes will make a "huge difference" for the industry. He added: "Removing the need for planning permission for essential electrical infrastructure like substations across the majority of sites will save months of delays, reduce costs and accelerate the delivery of the rapid charging hubs drivers need." Jack Counsens, head of roads policy at The AA, praised the positive step but said the government should be doing all it can: "The crucial element is ensuring grid connection in a timely manner. "This is especially important in rural locations and areas where there is no dedicated off-street parking." A charger mapping by firm Zap-Map has shown there were more than 79,000 publicly accessible charge points across the UK at the end of last month. This is an increase of 6,000 since the end of 2024, but just a quarter of the final goal for the next five years.

Lawmakers Push for Osprey Safety Report to Be Added to Annual Defense Funding Bill

House lawmakers want a safety report about the V-22 Osprey to be included in the annual defense appropriations bill after several deadly crashes killed troops and raised questions about the aircraft's continued use by the military. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., and Rep. Glenn Grothman, R-Wis., wrote a letter to the leadership of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense on Friday, asking for language to be added to the fiscal 2026 appropriations bill that would shed more light on historic mechanical failures with the aircraft. "These servicemembers are heroes, and their legacy should reflect their decorated careers, bravery and service to this nation," the letter says. "There is no question that our service members deserve better than to be protecting our country in an aircraft with known mechanical issues." Read Next: Pentagon Diverts $1 Billion from Army Barracks to Fund Border Mission Emmer and Grothman's letter follows a deadly Air Force Special Operations Command Osprey crash in November 2023 in Japan that killed eight airmen during a training mission. exclusively reported last year, after reviewing privileged safety information, that the crash was caused by issues in the tilt-rotor aircraft's gearbox -- specifically a fractured single high-speed planetary pinion gear. That internal Safety Investigation Board report detailed that other failures in the gearbox were first flagged back in 2013, a decade prior to the deadly crash, and concerns were raised at the Pentagon. Additionally, the company that made the part that failed has been plagued with a history of manufacturing issues. Emmer and Grothman's letter cited past reporting and specifically asks for language to be included that will examine past safety reports that probed failures, including that gear from the Japan crash. The letter asks the defense appropriator subcommittee to request "a report that includes the results of any safety investigation pertaining to any crash of the CV-22 Osprey since the introduction of the aircraft or other mishap involving the failure of the single high-speed planetary pinion gear." The language would require the defense secretary to submit the safety information within 30 days of the passage of the appropriations bill. Jason Gagnon, a spokesperson for Rep. Ken Calvert, R-Calif., the chair of the defense appropriations subcommittee, said the congressman would be working with other lawmakers on Osprey safety. "Chairman Calvert looks forward to working with Majority Whip Emmer and other colleagues on this issue," Gagnon said in an emailed statement. "The safety of our service members remains one of the top priorities of the Defense Subcommittee." Notably, almost a year ago, Grothman led a House Committee on Oversight and Reform subcommittee hearing into the safety record of the V-22 Osprey. reported earlier this month that the investigation had stalled with the Republican-led committee, which angered Gold Star families who lost loved ones in the crash and are still hoping for answers. "I'm beyond disappointed, to say the least, that these oversight efforts seem to have stalled or disappeared," Amber Sax, the wife of John Sax, a Marine Corps pilot who died in a 2022 Osprey crash, told earlier this month. Grothman blamed the previous administration for a lack of transparency. He signed the letter alongside Emmer, calling for safety reports two weeks after reporting pointing out the lack of progress. Air Force Special Operations Command spokesperson Lt. Col. Rebecca Heyse told in an emailed statement that they "continue to welcome congressional interest and oversight" on the Osprey program. "We maintain close coordination with the V-22 Joint Program Office to ensure resourcing and funding are prioritized to maximize readiness and safety of the CV-22, like we do for all our aircraft," Heyse said.
