Ottawa Senators Re-Sign Xavier Bourgault To One-Year Contract
The Ottawa Senators have re-signed forward Xavier Bourgault to a one-year, two-way contract, the team announced Saturday. The contract will pay him $775,000 at the NHL level and $90,000 at the AHL level. Bourgault had 12 goals and 26 points in 61 games with the AHL's Belleville Senators last season. The 22-year-old was acquired by the Senators along with Jake Chiasson in exchange for Roby Jarventie and a fourth round pick from the Edmonton Oilers in July 2024. The 22nd overall selection by the Oilers in the 2021 draft, Bourgault's offensive talent has not yet translated from the QMJHL, he has 33 goals and 80 points in 178 career AHL games with the Senators and Bakersfield Condors. The L'Islet, Que., native was instrumental in the Shawinigan Cataractes' 2022 QMJHL Championship after posting 22 points in 16 playoff games. He finished his junior career with 206 points in 197 games. The Senators have made several signings to improve their AHL squad and hope Bourgault is part of the improvement next season. Ottawa Senators Captain Brady Tkachuk Provides Full Health Update
Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk is skating pain-free again and says he's fully recovered from the injury that plagued him through the last couple of months of the 2024–25 season. On Monday, during an appearance on the Coming In Hot podcast, Tkachuk gave a full summertime health update, confirming that he's finally back to 100% after battling through injuries that began at the 4 Nations Faceoff in February. 'I definitely went with a more conservative approach,' Tkachuk said. 'I wouldn't say I had like anything major, just you know, just (needed) rest. And I think it took six weeks off of not doing anything. And then doing some little rehab exercises, but I really just tried letting rest do its job. And no, I feel great, actually. I feel like I really turned the corner the last couple of weeks and feel back to 100%. I started skating July 1st and I've been feeling really good. So, I'm happy with the progress and where everything's at.' Tkachuk also shared what the main issue had been: 'It was mostly like the hip flexor, groin, just all in that general vicinity. I don't know, I just pulled it, and it obviously didn't heal, just kept playing on it. So, it just kind of bugged me for the rest of the way. But I'm glad we kind of took the time after to reset it. Honestly, it feels 100 percent. I feel great. So, now I'm happy with kind of how everything's been going and how I'm feeling right now.' As he went deeper into the details, Tkachuk explained how the injury management became a balance between pushing through and preparing to heal properly afterward: 'It had been like three weeks to a month of just shutting it down. And obviously at that point in the season, there's no tomorrow to shut it down for. I just knew it was going to be a problem probably after the season that I'd have to get figured out. So, no, it's good. I mean, it happened for a reason. So, it kind of allowed the mental side of things to take over when it wasn't feeling great 100% physically." Now, with skating resumed and the injury behind him, the 25-year-old captain is focused on the season ahead. For a Sens team looking to take the next step in 2025–26, having their emotional leader and top forward healthy and re-energized is a great step in the right direction. Erik Karlsson trade rumors: A return to Ottawa Senators on the cards for the $92 million defenseman?
Erik Karlsson trade rumors: A return to Ottawa Senators on the cards for the $92 million defenseman? (Image Via Twitter) As the Pittsburgh Penguins found themselves missing the playoffs yet again, all eyes turned to the aging defenseman Erik Karlsson and where his future might lie. Karlsson still has two years left on a $92 million contract and has earned himself the urgency to chase a Stanley Cup, so he may reach the end of his tenure in Pittsburgh. Reports indicate he is growing restless; a storyline could emerge around a potential return to Ottawa, the team where his NHL legacy began, which could alter the outlook for both franchises. Erik Karlsson's time with the Pittsburgh Penguins has failed to deliver — MrPerfectSonic (@MrPerfectSonic) Arriving in the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2023 from the San Jose Sharks, the hopes were sky-high for Erik Karlsson. The Penguins wanted his offensive skills to breathe new life into an aging core of players centered on Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Despite his contribution to the cause of the game, three straight seasons of playing 82 games and scoring well over 70 points, the team has seen its fortunes tumble for two years in a row, missing out on qualification for the postseason. Financially, the investment didn't pan out either. Sharks are retaining $1.5 million a year, while the Pittsburgh Penguins are carrying a $10-million cap hit that feels heavy right now due to not making any postseason appearances. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brain tumor has left my son feeling miserable; please help! The Ottawa Senators appear as a potential landing zone Too Many Games | The Chris Johnston Show A reunion with the Ottawa Senators is being talked about, with NHL insider Chris Johnston saying it would be "a cool story" if Karlsson returns. The Senators took Karlsson 15th overall back in 2008 and are trending the right way after ending an eight-year playoff drought. Familiarity with the city and the organization would surely ease his transition there, while his offensive talent would do wonders for Ottawa's five-on-five metrics, which were near the bottom last season. The Senators, needing a right-shot defenseman and with roughly $4 million in cap space but would need to make a few financial arrangements - some salary-flipping, or possibly negotiating for retained salary from Pittsburgh - to get this reunion done. Canadian teams in the mix for Erik Karlsson The Senators aren't the only Canadian team tracking Karlsson. The Toronto Maple Leafs are said to be investigating options for strengthening their blueline and, while at it, compensating for lost offensive jobs. On the other hand, the Oilers may look at Karlsson as someone who can add depth to the back end, but would have some difficulty convincing Darnell Nurse to waive his no-movement clause. Karlsson appeared to be merely mildly underperforming, but he has had durability concerns in recent years, and his defensive limitations which is the one suitor has to pay attention to. Ottawa Senators will open the 2025-26 campaign with a trip to the Sunshine State
To be the best, you've got to beat the best. The Ottawa Senators will learn that the hard way when they open their National Hockey League season on the road with a trip through the Sunshine State before facing the Nashville Predators in a matinee home opener on Oct. 13 at the Canadian Tire Centre. The NHL released its schedule on Tuesday. The Senators will begin the 2025-26 campaign against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday, Oct. 9, at Amalie Arena before facing the difficult test of the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers on Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise. Fortunately, the Senators won't have to endure a banner raising before the puck is dropped at 7:30 p.m. The Panthers will open the season four days earlier against Connor Bedard and the Chicago Blackhawks at 5 p.m. as part of an ESPN tripleheader on Oct. 7. Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion. By signing up you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc. A welcome email is on its way. Don't expect to see captain Brady Tkachuk face off against his brother, Matthew, an alternate captain with the Panthers. Coming off his second straight Cup win, it sounds like Matthew will be undergoing surgery for a sports hernia and a torn adductor. The Senators will host the Predators at 1 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day in the club's home opener. After making the playoffs for the first time in eight years before losing in Round 1 to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first post-season Battle of Ontario in 21 years, the Senators are hoping that continued success on the ice will lead to better numbers at the box office. The Leafs will visit Ottawa twice, on Saturday, March 21, and on Thursday, April 15, while the Montreal Canadiens will be in town on Saturday, Jan. 17, and on Wednesday, March 11. The Senators went into last year with approximately 7,500 season tickets and the club is trying to move closer to the league average of 11,000. Ottawa saw an uptick in season-ticket sales, and the Senators had a 90% renewal rate heading into the summer. The club had 13 sellouts in the 18,652-seat arena last season. Last year, the Senators hosted the 2025 IIHF world junior championship, which meant the club spent nearly a month on the road. That isn't going to happen this year and the Senators will be able to capitalize on the popular home games that are held during the holiday season in Ottawa. That doesn't mean this schedule won't have its challenges. The Senators will have one of the longest trips in franchise history, which will get underway Nov. 20 against the Anaheim Ducks at the Honda Center. From there, the Senators will face the San Jose Sharks on Nov. 22, will be in Los Angeles on Nov. 24, and then the club will face Vegas on Nov. 26. On the way back East, the Senators will stop in St. Louis on Nov. 28 and Dallas on Nov. 30. Just for good measure, the Senators will face the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre on Dec. 2 before trudging home. The club had an eight-game trip last year during the world junior tourney, but was able to spend the Christmas break back in Ottawa. The club will have a 20-day break in the schedule from Feb. 5-26, which will allow NHL players to participate in the 2026 Olympic Winter Games being held in Italy. The Senators will play only one pre-season game in Ottawa. That will be on Sept. 21 at 3 p.m. against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The club will play two exhibition home games at the Videotron Centre in Quebec City as part of the training camp. Thursday, Oct. 9 at Tampa Bay, 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11 at Florida, 7 p.m. Monday, Oct 13 vs. Nashville, 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15 at Buffalo, 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16 vs. Seattle, 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18 vs. N.Y.
