Lester Holt Signs Off as NBC Nightly News Anchor — Will You Miss Him?
Lester Holt has officially left the anchor's chair. The veteran newsman delivered his final broadcast as the anchor of NBC Nightly News on Friday, and as usual, the bulk of the half-hour was devoted to delivering the day's news. Holt did take time at the end, however, to commemorate his time behind the desk: 'As an anchor, it's been an honor to lead this program, and an honor to be welcomed into your homes. I'm so grateful for your trust.' More from TVLine Liev Schreiber, Stephen Graham and Zazie Beetz to Star in Apple TV+ Adaptation of Lars Kepler's Joona Linna Crime Novels As Doctor Odyssey's Fate Hangs in the Balance, Joshua Jackson Thanks John Oliver for Viral Season 2 Renewal Plea Netflix's The Gentlemen Reveals Full Season 2 Cast as Filming Begins in UK Holt added that 'around here, facts matter, words matters, journalism matters… and you matter.' He brought out the entire Nightly News staff to join him on stage, and he urged viewers: 'Please continue to take care of yourself and each other, and I'll do the same.' That led into a montage of Holt's most memorable moments as anchor, including touring the sites of natural disasters and interviewing newsmakers. When the montage ended, Holt was clearly emotional as he said: 'It has been quite a ride. Thanks, everybody.' Holt announced in February that he was stepping down as NBC Nightly News anchor, a role he's held since 2015. Moving forward, he will focus on NBC News' Dateline, which he has anchored since 2011. 'After 10 years, 17 if you include my years on the weekends, the time has come for me to step away from my role as anchor of Nightly News,' Holt said in a statement to NBC staffers. 'It has truly been the honor of a lifetime to work with each of you every day, keeping journalism as our true north and our viewers at the center of everything we do.' Holt will be replaced by Tom Llamas, whose ascension to the Nightly News anchor chair was first reported in March. Llamas has served as a senior national correspondent for NBC News and reported for NBC Nightly News alongside Holt. He also anchored Top Story with Tom Llamas, a daily primetime newscast for NBC News NOW, and contributed to various NBC News outlets, including Today. His first broadcast as NBC Nightly News anchor airs this Monday, June 2. Will you miss Holt? Let us know what you think of NBC's big anchor swap in a comment below. Canadian rapper Tory Lanez stabbed 14 times in California prison attack
Canadian rapper Tory Lanez was hospitalized after an attack Monday at a California prison where he's serving a 10-year sentence for shooting hip-hop star Megan Thee Stallion in the feet, authorities said. Lanez, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, was attacked at a housing unit at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, at about 7:20 a.m., Pedro Calderon Michel, spokesman for the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, said in an email. Michel did not specify how Lanez was attacked, but a message posted on the rapper's Instagram account Monday evening said Lanez was stabbed 14 times and both his lungs collapsed. The post said Lanez is breathing on his own. Story continues below advertisement 'Despite being in pain, he is talking normally, in good spirits, and deeply thankful to God that he is pulling through,' the post said, adding Lanez was stabbed in his back, torso, head and face. The prison's investigative unit and the Kern County District Attorney's Office are investigating, he said. The prison is about 100 miles (160 kilometres) north of Los Angeles in the mountains of the Mojave Desert and houses about 1,700 medium- and maximum-security inmates. In December 2022, Lanez was convicted of three felonies: assault with a semiautomatic firearm; having a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. Megan, whose legal name is Megan Pete, testified during the trial that in July 2020, after they left a party at Kylie Jenner's Hollywood Hills home, Lanez fired the gun at the back of her feet and shouted for her to dance as she walked away from an SUV in which they had been riding. She had bullet fragments in both feet that had to be surgically removed. It wasn't until months after the incident that she publicly identified Lanez as the person who had fired the gun. A judge rejected a motion for a new trial from Lanez's lawyers, who are appealing his conviction. They did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Story continues below advertisement View image in full screen This combo image shows Tory Lanez performing at the Festival d'ete de Quebec, July 11, 2018, in Quebec City, Canada, left, and Megan Thee Stallion at the premiere of 'P-Valley,' June 2, 2022, in Los Angeles. Amy Harris, left, Richard Shotwell/Invision/AP, File Megan recently alleged that Lanez was harassing her from prison through surrogates, and in January a judge issued a protective order through 2030 ordering him to stop any such harassment or any other contact. The 32-year-old Lanez began releasing mixtapes in 2009 and saw a steady rise in popularity, moving on to major label albums, two of which reached the top 10 on Billboard's charts. The case created a firestorm in the hip-hop community, churning up issues including the reluctance of Black victims to speak to police, gender politics in hip-hop, online toxicity, and the ramifications of misogynoir, a particular brand of misogyny Black women experience. The often dramatic trial was packed with friends and family members of Lanez who felt he was a victim of both the justice system and the powerful people around Megan, who his managed by Jay-Z's Roc Nation. Story continues below advertisement When the verdict was announced, Lanez's father, Sonstar Peterson, jumped up and angrily denounced prosecutors and the system before he was dragged from the chaotic courtroom where many in the audience were shouting similar things. He later apologized to the judge. Megan Thee Stallion, 30, was already a major rising star at the time of the shooting, and her music's popularity has soared since. She won a Grammy for best new artist in 2021, and she had No. 1 singles with Savage, featuring Beyoncé, and as a guest on Cardi B's WAP.

Summer Walker puts a price on love in the luxurious music video for her latest single 'Spend It.' In the Lesly Lynch-directed video, the R&B singer plans an elaborate heist. 'Spend it on me, l love when you to spend it on me/Throw it to me, take me up in Givenchy/Before my love couldn't be bought/But now that's all I want,' Walker sings. At the end of the clip, viral social media personality Joanne the Scammer appears to suggest the story still hasn't reached its final chapter. In one still, a gold card flashes across the screen reading: ' The website features a timer tracking the days, hours, minutes, and seconds that have passed since Walker's last album. Just below it, the singer shared a video of studio footage overlayed with an announcement about what's holding the album up. 'I just feel like I don't really have the answer, like we all want to hear Rihanna's album, but she's not gonna tell us. She's not sitting here giving us PSA fucking videos every five seconds,' Walker said. 'I've been waiting on P-Valley for eternity. They're not giving me updates. I don't get updates about a lot of things. I've been wondering when white supremacy is gonna stop. No one's gonna ever give me that answer. So I just feel like they gotta deal with the same way I have to deal with it.' She added: 'You've gotta let me cook. It's actually almost done. With time, it just keeps getting better. I tried to turn this album in so long ago, and [manager] Justice [Baiden] was just like, 'Girl, please, you're gonna embarrass us.' And I'm glad that he fucking really made me keep going. I'm not gonna cap I think it was gonna get this good. And now is that some shit where I'm like, 'Wow, I love this.' Every day we add some new shit. Now we're down to the details.' Walker first announced her upcoming third studio album Finally Over It in October 2024, but an official release date has not been set. The record will feature 'Spend It' and the previously released single 'Heart of a Woman.' Finally Over It will also mark the conclusion of the album trilogy Walker started with Over It in 2019 and continued with Still Over It in 2021. In a review of Still Over It, Rolling Stone described the album as 'the affirmation of new love that Walker's fans have been waiting to hear for years: Lord willing, Summer Walker still has a lot of life — in love, and in music — ahead of her.'
