NBI nabs 2 alleged scammers in Pasay

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Wednesday announced the arrest of two individuals for large scale estafa in Pasay City. According to the NBI, one of the subjects introduced himself as the nephew and agent of a 'Mr. Kumar,' an alleged owner of a lending company, to the complainant, claiming that he could process and secure the approval of a cash loan amounting to P20 million in exchange for a facilitation fee. As a facilitation fee, the complainant said she gave one of the suspects a Hermes Birkin 35 Raisin Clemence and gold hardware worth an estimated P500,000. She also later gave him luxury bags, jewelry, and other items amounting to P11.8 million. However, the complainant was informed by a friend that Mr. Kumar does not own a lending company. She was later able to reach out to the real Mr. Kumar, who told her that he was not the person she transacted with. When the subject demanded another P42,000 from the complainant for the release of her loan, she filed a complaint before the NBI and requested an entrapment operation. On May 27, the NBI conducted the entrapment operation against the subject, leading to his arrest. During the booking procedures, a certain individual called the subject's phone and demanded his share of the facilitation fee. The NBI then conducted a hot pursuit operation, leading to the arrest of the second individual. The two underwent inquest proceedings before Pasay City prosecutors for Large-Scale Estafa under Article 315, paragraph 2(a) of the Revised Penal Code. The NBI said their arrest is also related to Section 6 of Republic Act No. 10175 (Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012) and computer-related identity theft under Section 4(b) (3) of Republic Act No. 10175. —Joahna Lei Casilao/RF, GMA Integrated News

DA, DOLE to include minimum wage earners in P20/kg rice program

Minimum wage earners will soon have access to the government's pilot test of the P20 per kilogram rice initiative, which has been initially rolled out to vulnerable sectors. This developed after the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) "agreed in principle" to include minimum wage earners in the ongoing pilot run of the subsidized rice program, the DA said in a statement on Tuesday. Launched early this month, the P20 per kilogram rice initiative under the Kadiwa ng Pangulo program only allows members of vulnerable sectors—including indigents, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and solo parents to buy NFA rice at P20 per kilogram. Rice sold in Kadiwa centers is subsidized by the government through the Food Terminal Inc. For programs where local government units (LGUs) share the subsidy, it will be up to the LGUs to determine eligibility. The limit is 30 kilograms per household. Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma and Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. had a discussion on the former's proposal for the inclusion of minimum wage earners in the subsidized rice program, according to the DA. "We had a very good and fruitful discussion in our shared goal of helping our workers, particularly minimum wage earners. By including them in this rice program, we aim to improve their purchasing power," said Laguesma. "We are looking forward to a very successful implementation of this convergence of the DA and the Department of Labor and Employment," said the Labor chief. For his part, Tiu Laurel reaffirmed the DA's commitment to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s directive, emphasizing that strong inter-agency collaboration is essential to sustaining and expanding the impact of this vital social responsibility program. "This initiative stems from the President's promise to extend the P20 rice program to those who need it most," said the DA chief, adding that "for now, participation is limited to workers from companies that have expressed interest in the pilot program." The DA said it expects that eligible workers from participating companies would gain access to the P20 rice program next month. The Agriculture Department is aiming to sustain the program until the end of Marcos' term in June 2028, potentially covering up to 15 million households—or approximately 60 million Filipinos. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

Honest traffic aide in Lapu-Lapu City turns over P20,000

An honest traffic enforcer turned over money he found worth P20,000 to the mayor of Lapu-Lapu City. Forty-four-year-old Mervin Legarte found the money at past 6 a.m. in Barangay Poblacion. According to Mervin, he has to pinch-hit for a colleague who took a day-off on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. While he was standing on Lopez Jaena Street, he saw something on the road that appeared to be money. He waited for over 30 minutes at the area hoping for the owner to appear and look for the lost item. But no one came back to look for any lost money, so Mervin decided to go to the house of Mayor Junard Chan to turn over the money. According to Chan, as there is no identification (ID) card, the claimant must first prove legitimate ownership to the money. It was learned that Mervin is working with the Lapu-Lapu City Government as traffic enforcer for six years already. In an interview, GMA Regional TV Balitang Bisdak asked Mervin if he was not tempted at all to keep the money. Mervin said that despite financial challenges, and having a sibling spending time at the hospital for a medical situation, what is on top of his mind is the anguish that the owner of the money is going through at the loss. "Wa gyud koy idea nga akong hilabtan ang kwarta. Ang akong hunahuna nga basin kinahanglanon gyud tos tag-iya kay daku-dako man gyud nga kwarta. Nasu'd sa akong hunahuna nga ako lang gyud i-turn over sa masaligan ba; kay ang tag-iya adto wala ta kahibawo kon unsa ang iyang gibati, gahilak ba siya…' Mervin said. —GMA Regional TV

Court issues arrest warrant vs. Darryl Yap over Pepsi Paloma film

A Muntinlupa court has issued an arrest warrant for director Darryl Yap, but he was not taken into custody after posting bail. On March 19, the Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 203 recalled the arrest warrant after Yap posted a P10,000 cash bond for each of the two libel charges, totaling P20,000. Yap's lawyer, Atty. Raymund Fortun, confirmed the bail. The court scheduled Yap's arraignment for March 26, 2025. The charges stem from Yap's teaser for his upcoming film, 'The Rapists of Pepsi Paloma', which included a controversial scene involving actor-host Vic Sotto. Yap's camp and Sotto declined to comment on the matter.
