ONGC to fund cancer infrastructure in three hospitals
Kakinada: Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has agreed to provide financial support for the installation of advanced radiation machines for cancer treatment at government hospitals in Kakinada, Guntur, and Kadapa districts. The initiative, costing Rs 48 crore, will be funded under ONGC's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. The decision was taken following a meeting between Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri and a delegation comprising Dr P Chandrasekhar, Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications, and Rajya Sabha MP Sana Satish Babu. During the meeting held in New Delhi on Thursday, the leaders sought central assistance in strengthening the fight against cancer in Andhra Pradesh. Speaking to 'The Hans India', MP Satish Babu said that the proposal involved the procurement of three state-of-the-art radiation therapy machines, each worth approximately Rs 16 crore. Minister Puri responded positively and initiated discussions with ONGC officials, leading to the company's commitment to provide the equipment. He also said that these machines will play a crucial role in the early detection and effective radiation treatment of cancer. The equipment will soon be installed at the respective government hospitals, significantly enhancing oncology infrastructure and care in the region.

NTR Health University hosts Webex session on ECMO
VIJAYAWADA: Dr NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS) conducted its inaugural Webex session on Monday, uniting representatives from all government and private medical colleges across Andhra Pradesh. The virtual meeting featured a lecture by internationally renowned paediatric critical care expert, Dr Suneel Pooboni, currently Consultant at Mediclinic, Dubai, UAE. Held under the guidance of Vice-Chancellor Dr P Chandrasekhar and Registrar Dr V Radhika Reddy, the session focused on 'Way Forward in Critical Care Journey: Is ECMO Possible in Our Setup?' Dr Pooboni provided an in-depth overview of ECMO (Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation), a life-saving intervention used when the heart or lungs fail and conventional care is ineffective. He highlighted ECMO's significance in cases of severe pneumonia, cardiac arrest, and heart failure, where ventilators fall short. While ECMO is commonplace in Western nations, its presence in India remains limited due to high costs and the need for specialised infrastructure and trained staff.

Yoga crucial to student wellness: NTRUHS V-C
VIJAYAWADA: Emphasising the significance of integrating yoga into students' daily routines, Dr P Chandrasekhar, Vice Chancellor of Dr NTR University of Health Sciences, highlighted yoga's 5,000-year-old heritage and its relevance in modern life. Addressing a yoga demonstration organized by the university in collaboration with medical students and staff on Wednesday, Dr Chandrasekhar said yoga enhances both physical and mental health. 'Students should adopt yoga as a daily practice to maintain a healthy mind-body balance,' he stated. He lauded Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for launching a month-long yoga awareness campaign from May 21 to June 21, aimed at encouraging widespread public participation and promoting yoga's health benefits. Dr Chandrasekhar announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and CM Naidu will participate in a landmark yoga event on June 21 at Visakhapatnam Beach, targeting a Guinness World Record with five lakh participants. He noted that wellness-focused infrastructure is being developed on the university campus, including walking tracks and yoga spaces, to promote a healthy lifestyle. Chairman of the Medical Council Dr Srihari Rao and other dignitaries participated in the event. The university reiterated its commitment to holistic health and wellness.

Gas leak at pharma unit claims two lives in Anakapalle
VISAKHAPATNAM: Two workers lost their lives and another was critically injured following a gas leak at Sai Sreyas Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd., located in Jawaharlal Nehru Pharma City, Parawada of Anakapalle district on Thursday. The incident occurred while the employees were on duty and reportedly fell unconscious due to inhalation of leaked gas. The deceased were P Chandrasekhar, safety manager from Telangana, and Saragadam Kumar, safety officer from Munagapaka, Anakapalli, their bodies were shifted to King George Hospital (KGH) mortuary in Visakhapatnam. The injured, Baidoo Baisal, a helper from Boden of Odisha, is currently undergoing treatment. Honorary President of the Pharma City Staff and Workers' Union, Ganisetti Satyanarayana, demanded a detailed investigation into the incident, citing past accidents at the facility. He alleged that repeated lapses in safety standards were the cause and demanded Rs 1 crore compensation for each bereaved family. He warned of large-scale protests if action is not taken. Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha expressed her condolences over the deaths and directed officials to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured worker. She also held discussions with Anakapalle District Collector Vijaya Krishnan to gather details about the incident. Anakapalle MP and Railway Standing Committee Chairman CM Ramesh also expressed deep sorrow over the accident. He urged hospital authorities to provide timely treatment. The MP further instructed concerned departments to conduct a thorough inquiry and take necessary measures to prevent future mishaps. Minister for Labour and Industries Vasamsetti Subhash also responded to the incident with concern. He spoke with officials to understand the cause of the leak and assured that the government would extend full support to the families of the victims. He directed authorities to take strict action against those responsible for the negligence and submit a report.
