Aussie pipped in playoff by cigar-smoking Spaniard

Miguel Angel Jimenez has won at Wakonda Club for his third PGA Tour Champions victory of the year, beating Australia's Cameron Percy and Soren Kjeldsen with a birdie on the first hole of a playoff. Denmark's Kjeldsen finished with a 63, and Percy shot 67 to match Jimenez at 17-under 199. American Kevin Sutherland was a stroke back after a 68. Jimenez closed with a birdie on the 311-yard, par-4 18th for a two-under 70, then made a four-footer for another birdie on the extra hole. The 61-year-old Spanish star led wire-to-wire, opening with rounds of 63 and 66. Jimenez has 16 career PGA Tour Champions victories since he joined in 2014, also winning in February in Morocco and in March in Newport Beach, California. The winning moment for Miguel Angel Jimenez! It's the 61-year-old's 16th PGA TOUR Champions victory! — PGA TOUR Champions (@ChampionsTour) June 1, 2025 "It was hard," Jimenez said. "People (were) playing very well, as you can see." Jimenez started the final round with a two-shot lead over Victorian Percy. Kjeldsen was lodged seven shots back, but the 50-year-old making his second Champions Tour start fired a bogey-free final round to take the clubhouse lead. Kjeldsen owned a one-shot edge when Jimenez and Percy reached the 18th, a drivable par-4. Jimenez and Percy lined their tee shots to the front of the green, then two-putted for birdie and a three-way playoff. The trio returned to the 18th, but only the Spaniard produced a solid tee shot. While Jimenez drove just short of the green to the right - setting up a good angle to the pin - Kjeldsen sliced his off the cart path to the No.1 tee box on the right and the 51-year-old Percy yanked his underneath a scoreboard to the left. Kjeldsen and Percy scrambled to earn pars, but Jimenez calmly chipped within three feet and drained a straightforward birdie putt. Jimenez's $US300,000 ($A466,500) payday increased his 2025 earnings to $US1.8 million ($A2.8 million) and he celebrated by pulling a cigar out of his bag just off the 18th green. At least one runner-up, meanwhile, didn't walk away with a bad taste in his mouth. "I played great today, so no regrets," Kjeldsen said. "Miguel is a great champion." With Reuters.

Overconfidence hits Harrington as he losses out on Senior PGA Championship title

Padraig Harrington narrowly missed out on the Senior PGA Championship as he finishes one shot behind winner Angel Cabrera at the Congressional Country Club in Maryland. The Dubliner was leading by two shots through 14 put a double bogey on 15, par five on 16 and three-putt bogey on 18 opened the door for Carbrera to finish on eight under and secure his second senior major in a week following his win at The Tradition in Alabama. 53-year-old Harrington finished with a share of second with Thomas Bjorn on seven under par. 'I have a life long problem with getting confident and cocky and I did in the 15th tee box and it was just a simple tee shot, five wood, little draw down there and I just totally didn't get into it enough and then panicked at the last moment and hit a big hook" said Harrington after his final round. "It has always plagued me my whole life since I have been a kid just get over confident.. I would have been much better off if I got to the 15th hole and there was water everywhere I probably would have done a better job. "I just sometimes, it follows me around that I get over confident. If I had the ability to do what I say I'd be the best player in the world but unfortuntely I don't." "I'm disappointed now. It is going to be a lot more disappointing if he doesn't hole that." 'I'm extremely disappointed not to win.' @Padraig_H addresses the media after falling short by one shot at Congressional. @SeniorPGAChamp — PGA TOUR Champions (@ChampionsTour) May 25, 2025 Carbrer had shared the lead with South Africa's Retief Goosen and England's Phillip Archer and Jason Caron/ Caron and Goosen both finished with final rounds of 71 and tied with Stewart Cink for fourth on six under. Archer shot a five over 77 to drop to even par. Darren Clarke finished on three under for the tournament in a three-way tie for 11th beside Miguel Angel Jimenez and YE Yang. "I'm extremely happy after winning two tournaments in a row, and also three tournaments within a year," Cabrera told NBC through a translator. "I'm extremely happy, especially after everything that happened. "I didn't know that it was going to happen this quickly, winning two tournaments in a row, especially with all these great players around this tour. I feel very emotional and proud."

'The people up there are the people that have a lot of experience,' Cabrera said after getting to 5 under for the tournament. 'Most of them have been in many majors, and you can see that.' Advertisement Goosen has two US Open championships on his resume and Cabrera one of those to go along with the 2009 Masters. Harrington won the British Open in '07 and '08 and Cink in '09, while Singh has two PGA Championship victories and another in the Masters. That kind of sustained winning over the past few decades certainly helped prepare those guys for windy conditions at Congressional Country Club, which has hosted three US Opens and one PGA Championship. 'A tough golf course — all the guys that have really done it on hard golf courses really rise to the top and seem to grind it out more maybe a little bit more than certain players,' said Goosen, who shot a 4-under 68 to surge up the leaderboard. 'I certainly grinded it out.' Advertisement So did Harrington, whose opening tee shot went right of the cart path in an inauspicious start to an eventful afternoon. The 53-year-old from Ireland birdied 18 to bounce back from some back-nine struggles and put himself in contention. 'I'm happy to be two shots back,' Harrington said. 'I haven't really thought too much about my round, to be honest. Just tried to play. With the wind, sometimes it's good that you just play each hole as it comes.' Cink, now 52 joked, 'This kind of wind is for young people.' But he and his contemporaries mostly handled it without the third round going off the rails. Ernie Els, who was 3 under Thursday and two back of the lead, had a second consecutive rough round, shooting a 4-over 76. 'This course is really demanding, with the wind especially,' Cink said. 'Every hole, there's a place you just cannot go, and you have to know where that is and game plan for it and you have to execute. That's just major championship golf.' Some of the best play at the PGA Champions major also came from some of the less heralded golfers, including Phillip Archer and Jason Caron, who matched Goosen and Cabrera at 5 under. Caron, who grew up on Cape Cod, was paired with Harrington, and it was yet another chance for the club pro at Mill River Club on Long Island, to feel like he is not out of place surrounded by a star-studded cast. 'A year ago, I definitely would have said, 'Whoa, this can't happen,' ' Caron said. 'Now that I've played maybe 20 events, I feel much more comfortable.' Advertisement At the 2024 Caron, the PGA Head Professional at The Mill River Club in New York, would go on to make 10 more starts in the 2024 PGA TOUR Champions season. He obtained… — PGA TOUR Champions (@ChampionsTour) Archer, who played a long time on the European Tour, said this is why he has spent so much time in his life on the driving range hitting ball after ball — to be in it against the likes of Goosen, Cabrera, Cink, and Harrington. 'You've grown up watching these guys win tournaments and majors, and yeah, you're in their company, and you've got to tell yourself you belong there,' Archer said. 'I'm there by credit, and I'm playing nice stuff.' Archer would like to see the wind continue Sunday to make it tough on anyone chasing the lead. The forecast calls for much less of it and weaker gusts, which could bring even more golfers into the already crowded fray. 'If it's not windy, there's so many people up there, somebody is going to shoot 66, 65,' Harrington said. 'You've got to expect if it's a nice day [Sunday], somebody is going to shoot a good score.'

Newton Golf Company Reports First Quarter 2025 Financial Results

Revenue Surges 246% Year-Over-Year as Newton Motion Shaft Adoption Accelerates Across Major Tours CAMARILLO, Calif., May 15, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- via IBN – NEWTON GOLF Company (NASDAQ: NWTG) ('Newton Golf' or the 'Company'), a technology-forward golf company delivering physics-based performance innovations for players at every level, today reported financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2025. First Quarter 2025 Highlights Revenue increased 246% to $1.2 million, compared to $350,000 in Q1 2024 Gross profit rose 348% to $852,000, up from $190,000 in the prior-year period Gross margin expanded to 70%, up from 54% a year ago Net loss of $0.5 million, or ($0.55) per share, compared to a net loss of $1.2 million, or ($24.85) per share in Q1 2024. Note: The Q1 2024 per-share figure reflects the pre-uplisting share count, which was significantly lower. The Company's uplisting to Nasdaq in August 2024 included a share conversion, which substantially increased the share count used for calculating earnings per share. Cash and cash equivalents totaled $5.9 million as of March 31, 2025 Newton Motion shaft adoption surpassed 30 professionals, with 8 new players joining across PGA TOUR Champions, LPGA, Korn Ferry, and PGA TOUR events during the quarter Management Commentary 'We are very pleased with our first-quarter results, especially given that it is typically the offseason for golf,' said Greg Campbell, Chief Executive Officer of Newton Golf. 'When we launched the Newton Motion shaft, our goal was to engineer performance that speaks for itself. The fact that more than 30 professionals are now using Newton shafts across major tours—and that 8 of those joined in Q1—validates both the technology and our direction. We're just getting started. Demand for our Fast Motion shaft has exceeded expectations, and we are ramping up production to keep pace.' 'We continue to execute with discipline and focus. The 246% year-over-year revenue growth reflects strong demand, expanding distribution, and improving unit economics. While gross margins expanded to 70%, our operating expenses in Q1 were temporarily elevated due to several one-time costs, including: Extra legal expenses associated with special shareholder meetings and warrant exercises. Higher audit expenses tied to warrant valuation and warrant accounting. One-time transfer agent fees. Proxy solicitor costs related to the special shareholder meeting. These expenses were necessary to support key strategic actions and ensure regulatory compliance. With gross margins holding strong and $5.9 million in cash, we remain well-positioned to scale the business strategically while maintaining financial discipline.' Recent Business Highlights Shaft sales grew 314% year-over-year Newton Fast Motion, the Company's lightweight innovation, was adopted by multiple Tour professionals in Q1 Secured distribution with two of Japan's largest golf retailers, extending Newton's international reach Expanded product testing and engagement with club fitting leaders in Europe and North America Showcased Newton's full product lineup at the 2025 PGA Show in Orlando, highlighting both shaft and putter innovations to key industry stakeholders Looking Ahead 'As we look ahead to the rest of 2025, our focus remains on expansion—new products, new markets, and continued Tour validation,' added Campbell. 'We believe Newton's trajectory is being driven by something deeper than hype. It's being driven by results, by performance, and by trust on Tour. And we're building for the long term.' Revenue Guidance The Company expects full-year 2025 revenue to range between $6.5 million and $7.0 million, representing continued strong growth from 2024.
