Rory McIlroy to debut at the DP World India Championship in October 2025
INDIA: Grand Slam champion Rory McIlroy has recently announced that he will participate in the $4 million DP World India Championship. This marks his first-ever appearance in a professional tournament in India during his entire golfing career. McIlroy made his name known as a global golf icon by completing his career Grand Slam last April 2025, gaining his Green jacket at the Masters Tournament. This achievement added to his exceptional list of Major titles, including the 2011 U.S. Open, PGA Championship titles in 2012 and 2014, and The Open Championships in 2014. Now, McIlroy is set to bring global attention to his DP World India Championship debut, which will happen at Delhi Golf Club from Oct 16 to 19, 2025. With this, Mcllroy expressed: 'I'm excited to not only tee it up in India for the first time but also visit a country that I've always wanted to explore.' He added: 'I'm proud to play in the inaugural DP World India Championship. I've always enjoyed playing a global schedule and as I have previously said, there is tremendous potential to grow golf further in the country. All about the DP World India Championship The DP World India Championship was introduced this season by the global smart logistics leader, DP World, in partnership with the DP World Tour. The tournament is co-sanctioned by the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) and offers a record-breaking US$4 million prize fund, being the largest prize fund for a DP World Tour event held in India. The launch of the DP World India Championship shows India's rising prominence as a destination for top-tier golf. 1983 WC winner, PGTI chief Kapil Dev meets UP CM Yogi Adityanath in Lucknow
Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) chief and 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at his official residence here in Lucknow on Friday. CM Yogi took to X to share a glimpse of the meeting and wrote, "Renowned cricketer and captain of the 1983 World Cup-winning Indian cricket team, Kapil Dev paid a courtesy visit to the official residence in Lucknow today." Kapil Dev, who had a distinguished cricket career, represented India from 1978 to 1994. Known as one of the greatest all-rounders, he played 131 Tests, scoring 12,867 runs and taking 434 wickets. In 225 ODIs, he scored 6,945 runs and claimed 253 scalps and also led India to its first World Cup win in 1983. After he retired from cricket, Kapil Dev worked in various capacities - as a coach, commentator and chancellor of the Sports University of Haryana in 2019. He also had a brief stint as India's coach for 10 months between October 1999 and August 2000. In June 2024, Kapil Dev took over as president of PGTI from Srinivasan H R. He was elected unanimously for the position. The former cricketer, who has also excelled as an amateur golfer, has been the vice president and a member of the governing body of PGTI for three years (2021 to 2023) before being elected as PGTI chief. One of his notable contributions as a board member was the introduction of the Kapil Dev Grant Thornton Invitational tournament at the DLF Golf and Country Club. Over the past few years, Kapil's fame and passion for the sport earned him invitations to major events like the Dunhill Links, where he played alongside other global celebrities. In March this year, PGTI and Adani Group launched 'Adani Invitational Golf Championship 2025. The inaugural tournament, offering a Rs 1.5 crore prize pool, successfully took place at Jaypee Greens Golf Spa Resort, Greater Noida, from April 1-4, marking PGTI's return to the venue after 11 years.

The legendary Kapil Dev stated that golf was one of the few really inclusive sports in today's landscape. 'It's true inclusiveness,' said Kapil, at the inauguration of Kapil Dev Grant-Thornton Invitational at the Prestige Golfshire Club in the city's outskirts on Thursday. 'Among physical sports, this is the only game where men and women can compete from the same point, and women can beat the men and men can beat the women. 'It's one of the few sports where people of any calibre, any age can play together. So an eight-year-old, an 80-year-old, a male professional golfer, a female professional golfer, a business person who has just started playing could all play together and have a good enjoyable round.' Kapil, who is also the president of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), stressed that golf was never meant to be a game only for the rich and that it should be a game for the masses. He also said that sponsors' support was essential for all sports, not just golf. 'Without money, nothing is possible. Sponsors are indeed the real backbone of any sport.' The Kapil Dev-Grant Thornton Invitational is a three-day, 54-hole championship which will see some of India's top male and female professionals compete for a prize purse of ₹2 crore.

Kapil Dev Grant Thornton Invitational: Gaurav Pratap take first-round lead with course record 63
Bengaluru: Gaurav Pratap Singh of Noida fired a course record score of nine-under 63 to take the first-round lead at the Rs 2 crore Kapil Dev Grant Thornton Invitational 2025 being played at the Prestige Golfshire Club in Bengaluru. Gaurav's flawless round broke the previous course record of five-under 67 set by Rashid Khan in 2012. Delhi's Arjun Prasad, fresh from his runner-up finish in Delhi last week, continued his fine form with an eight-under 64 as he held second position on day one. Bengaluru's Khalin Joshi struck a 65 to be placed third at the first-of-its-kind PGTI event with a mixed field of men and lady professionals. Gaganjeet Bhullar, Om Prakash Chouhan, and Yuvraj Sandhu were among the prominent names bunched tied in sixth with scores of 67. Hitaashee Bakshi had the best score among the lady golfers after she returned a 69 to be tied for 19th. Gaurav Pratap Singh began his day with a tap-in birdie on the first and followed that up with a 20-foot eagle conversion on the fifth. Some outstanding tee shots with the 3-wood and great wedge play helped Gaurav, a winner of four pro titles, including two on the PGTI main tour, collect five more birdies between the eighth and the 16th. The 40-year-old finally drained a 15-footer for birdie on the 17th to close the day with a phenomenal 63. 'Everything came together well today as far as my game is concerned. I was nursing a couple of injuries in my knee and wrist in the previous weeks, but right now the body is in good shape and I'm injury-free. 'This course is in peach condition and requires a lot of planning. I'm playing with a clear plan and using my 3-wood more often than the driver because I'm looking to place the ball well off the tee. The plan seemed to work for me today. The eagle early on in my round gave me a lot of momentum and was one of the highlights of my round. 'It's great to play this new format where the lady professionals are also competing for the main prize. I'm also looking forward to playing alongside the amateurs. I would like to take this opportunity to thank PGTI President Mr. Kapil Dev and Grant Thornton for getting this event back on the PGTI schedule.' Arjun Prasad, currently placed second on the PGTI Order of Merit with five top-10s this season, posted nine birdies and a bogey on Thursday. He landed it within five feet on five occasions and knocked in three birdie putts from a range of 10 to 12 feet. Arjun said, 'The game is in great shape, and that is evident from the fact that this is my second straight round of eight-under. I fired an eight-under in the last round of last week's event in Delhi. So, it feels like I resumed from where I left off the previous week.' Earlier in the day, the tournament was inaugurated with the unveiling of the trophy and ceremonial tee-offs by PGTI President, tournament host, and Indian cricket legend Kapil Dev, Grant Thornton Bharat CEO Vishesh C Chandiok, Vinod Chandiok, leading Indian professionals Gaganjeet Bhullar and Tvesa Malik as well as former India cricketer Ajit Agarkar. The tournament combines the Professional Championship with a thrilling Pro-Am component, bringing together professionals and amateurs in a dynamic and engaging way. The three-day, 54-hole championship features 60 men and 12 women professionals competing for the same prize purse. The event will also feature three Pro-Am rounds in a rotational format, with 48 professionals teeing off in the morning, while the remaining 24 pair up with 72 amateurs in the afternoon session. Each Pro-Am team will comprise one professional and three amateurs, with scores combining the pro's stroke play and the amateurs' scramble format. Prize money will be awarded to the top three professionals in the Pro-Am standings.
