Ageing population and its burdens on women among key issues at Wanita PKR congress
JOHOR BARU: The ageing population and its effect on women were among the key issues raised at the Wanita PKR Congress held here. Of the 14 delegates who debated at the congress held in Danga Bay Convention Centre on Friday (May 23), at least two highlighted the urgent need for the country to prepare for an ageing society. Terengganu PKR Wanita chief Armila Alias questioned the country's readiness, pointing out that Malaysia has already crossed the threshold to be considered an ageing nation. "The United Nations defines an ageing population as a country where 7% of its people are aged 65 and above. "Malaysia reached 7.6% in 2024, and the figure is expected to rise to 15% by 2040, which would make us an aged nation. "The question now is, are we ready? Are our policies, structures and societal culture equipped to handle this wave of ageing?" she said, adding that 9% of the population in Terengganu was already aged 60 and above in 2023. She called for more efforts to empower women, who often shoulder the caregiving responsibilities for the elderly. "Statistically, the majority of caregivers for ageing parents are women. They are the daughters, daughters-in-law, and even granddaughters. "However, caregiving requires physical, mental and financial support. I hope basic elderly care training can be systematically provided at the community level. "I also hope PKR Wanita can organise dual-parenting modules, and not just on raising children but also on caring for elderly parents," she said. Echoing a similar concern was Selangor PKR Wanita chief Pua Pei Ling, who pointed out that the burden of caregiving, especially for ailing parents, falls largely on women. "We often hear complaints from young women who had to quit their jobs to care for elderly parents, or take on multiple jobs to cope. "This is the reality for many women. Their biggest fear as they grow older is being neglected. Other key issues discussed during the congress included climate change, the development of artificial intelligence, and the role of women in elections.

PKR polls: New party leadership must close ranks ahead of GE16, says Fadhlina
Fadhlina Sidek Facebook picture. JOHOR BARU: The new line-up of party leaders should prioritise efforts to strengthen the party, including dispelling any rumours, says PKR Wanita chief Fadhlina Sidek. "The most fundamental thing in any team is to address misunderstandings, negative assumptions and rumours. "We must ensure our focus is directed towards strengthening the party, staying grounded in its ideology and continuing our forward-looking agenda," she said in her closing speech during the PKR Wanita Congress here. She said this was a crucial step to ensure party unity is preserved. Fadhlina, who is also Education Minister, urged the incoming women's wing leadership to continue the party's existing women empowerment initiatives. "Whoever is appointed must carry these programmes forward and improve them. "The new leadership must be given the time and space to focus, because we are entering a very crucial period to build and strengthen the party as a united team before the next general election," she said. Fadhlina, who is in a straight fight against Rodziah Ismail for the PKR Wanita chief post, also apologised for any shortcomings during her two-year stint. She also said that some 1,265 delegates had voted as of 4pm on Friday (May 23).

Preparing Malaysia Towards An Aged Nation By 2030 Among Issues Debated By PKR Wanita Delegates
JOHOR BAHRU, May 23 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's preparation towards an aged nation by 2030 was among the issues raised by several representatives of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Wanita wing at the debate session on the policy speech of Wanita chief at the 18th PKR Wanita National Congress, today. Terengganu PKR Wanita chief Armila Alias, when raising the matter, said basic care training for the elderly should be provided systematically at the community level from the health department, the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). "PKR Wanita can organise a two-way parenting module, which is not only caring for children but also caring for elderly parents, in line with our culture, which is based on family values," she said. Armila also emphasised that the health care and emotional wellbeing of the elderly desperately need access to quality healthcare, including rural hospitals and clinics, which need to be equipped with special elderly care units. In addition, she said community programmes such as light exercise for the elderly, mind therapy and spiritual halaqah (gathering) must be strengthened with the cooperation of mosques, Senior Citizens Activity Centres (PAWE) and women's NGOs. In terms of women's economy and retirement, Armila proposed that PKR Wanita create a Women's Community Fund as a micro-savings and support scheme during old age, starting from the age of 40, in collaboration with relevant agencies. Selangor representative Pua Pei Ling, the Bukit Lanjan State Assemblyman (ADUN), also agreed that the issue of caring for the elderly should be a priority in moving towards an ageing nation. She said that so far, more than 400,000 Selangor residents have entered the elderly phase, and among the things that the state has implemented to prepare for an ageing nation is the launch of the Selangor Care Economy Policy 2024-2030, or Care Economy Policy. Meanwhile, Sarawak representative Rebecca Beka anak Bana raised the issue of climate change, which she said affects the daily lives, economy and safety of many people.

Same answer as Nurul Izzah, no need for debate, says Fadhlina to Rodziah
PETALING JAYA: Fadhlina Sidek has turned down the call for a debate by Rodziah Ismail. According to Sinar Harian, the PKR Wanita chief said that there was no need for a debate as the most important thing was to strengthen the party and give full support to the party president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. "My answer is the same as Nurul Izzah Anwar, there is no need. Right now, our focus is to strengthen the party. "All the initiatives we've undertaken are aimed at strengthening the party and showing full support for our president,' she told a press conference following a campaign event in Seremban on Monday (May 19) night. Fadhlina was responding to Rodziah, who is challenging the Education Minister for the top Wanita post in the party. She said that debates were good if taken in the context of discussing policy matters. 'But in the current climate, our focus should be on unity and strengthening the party,' she said. Earlier, Nurul Izzah, who is challenging Rafizi Ramli for the No. 2 spot in the party, also declined his invitation for a debate.

PKR remains united despite Rafizi's actions, says leader
Selangor PKR strategic director Saifuddin Shafi (left) advised PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli to prioritise 'offer-based' campaigning over misleading rhetoric. PETALING JAYA : A PKR central leadership council candidate says the party remains united despite deputy president Rafizi Ramli's decision to skip the upcoming PKR Youth and Wanita congress. Selangor PKR strategic director Saifuddin Shafi said Rafizi's decision has fuelled rhetoric in the media that the party is divided and on the verge of collapse. 'In reality, that is not the case,' he said in a statement today. Saifuddin advised Rafizi to prioritise 'offer-based' campaigning over misleading rhetoric. The PKR Youth and Wanita wings will have their congress on May 22, with the opening ceremonies held the night before. The party's central leadership election is scheduled for May 23, followed by the national congress opening on May 24. Yesterday, Rafizi confirmed that he would be skipping the Youth and Wanita congress, traditionally opened by the deputy president, citing principles over politics. He said his refusal stemmed from a breach of party protocol after the Sabah PKR election machinery launch was allegedly announced without prior discussion by the party's political bureau or central leadership council. Rafizi had reportedly sent a letter to PKR president Anwar Ibrahim informing him of his decision not to accept an invitation to officiate the Youth and Wanita congress. He said the letter was addressed to only Anwar and PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh, and asked how it had been leaked. PKR Youth chief Adam Adli confirmed yesterday that the wing had received a copy of Rafizi's letter to Anwar, in which he declined the invitation despite initially agreeing. A copy of the letter, which has been circulating on social media, showed that it was also copied to Wanita PKR chief Fadhlina Sidek. Fuziah told FMT she and Anwar were not the only ones to receive Rafizi's letter. Saifuddin said differences in opinion among members are normal, and claims that the party is being dragged towards downfall are 'extraordinary and baseless'. 'I believe the letter (to Anwar) was later shared through certain channels as a general announcement of his absence, and from there, it became public discussion. 'I feel it is unfair for this matter to be turned into campaign material for the party election,' he said.
