Rafizi warns GST could hit poor hardest, keeps return option open
ANY move to bring back the goods and services tax (GST) would burden poorer households who are not paying income tax and push up inflation, warns Pandan MP and former economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli. Speaking on the latest episode of the Yang Berhenti Menteri podcast, Rafizi said GST was a regressive tax that would force low-income families – previously exempt from income tax under the current sales and service tax regime – to 'pay tax for the first time'. 'But when GST is imposed, all daily essentials are taxed. That could mean RM1,000 to RM2,000 a year in new costs for families who have never paid any (income) tax before,' he said, adding that the 2015 GST rollout saw prices jump by 6% to 7%. 'In Malaysia, once prices go up, they rarely come back down,' he said, urging the government to keep inflation around 2% and implement wage reforms before considering the tax. Rafizi's latest remarks echo earlier warnings in 2023, when he acknowledged GST's efficiency in combating tax evasion but cautioned against using it as a 'shortcut' to raise revenue without fixing governance and spending efficiency. 'Once it is seen to raise income, it becomes addictive… you just keep raising it from initially 5%, then 7% and eventually it will be 20%,' he said at the PTD Alumni forum in February 2023. Still, Rafizi as a minister, has previously left the door open to a GST comeback, telling reporters in September 2023 that reviving the tax 'remains an option' as part of a wider strategy to strengthen fiscal sustainability. At the time, he said the government's focus was on introducing a capital gains tax in 2024, with any decision on new taxes to be announced during budget presentations. His comments then came after calls by MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong and several economists for GST's return, provided safeguards were in place. The current unity government has so far ruled out reintroducing GST in the near term. Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan last month described it as 'impractical' under current economic conditions, while Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the tax would only be considered once the economy improves and the minimum wage reaches RM4,000 or more. — Aug 9, 2025

BTS Releases ‘Permission To Dance On Stage – Live' Album After 3 Years Of Hiatus
Last Updated: The live album is named after their 2021 sold-out tour, titled "Permission to Dance." The moment ARMYs from all around the world have been waiting for is finally here! BTS has just released their Permission To Dance On Stage – Live album on July 18, their first project since completing their respective military services. This is also their first release in three years, marking their return as a full unit after a hiatus. The Live album, named after their sold-out tour Permission to Dance, is nearly an hour and 20 minutes long. It features 22 songs from the K-pop supergroup's 2021 tour, which was held across South Korea and the United States. The septet had originally launched their PTD tour as an online concert due to COVID-19 restrictions. And when the world opened up, they decided to expand the tour to stages. BTS performed 12 massive shows in Seoul, Los Angeles and Las Vegas, drawing in over 4 million fans through in-person shows, live cinema viewing and online streaming. Permission To Dance On Stage – Live album features some of the fan favourites, including DNA, Idol, Fake Love and Boy With Luv (feat. Halsey), along with Black Swan, Spring Day, Airplane pt. 2 and Silver Spoon. And of course, their English-language anthems Butter, Dynamite and Permission to Dance are also included in the track listing. The album comes with a digital code for the live recording of the group's Seoul performance. In early July, the seven members — RM, Jin, J-Hope, Suga, Jimin, V and Jungkook — gathered together for the first time since their hiatus in 2022. The septet hosted a Weverse livestream, where they informed the fans of their future endeavours after their military discharge. BTS revealed that they were heading to Los Angeles to work on their brand-new album, which is scheduled to be released somewhere between March and May 2026. They will be in the United States for a special songwriting camp, where they will work with international producers. Besides announcing a new album, they also shared that they will embark on their highly anticipated world tour, marking the first since their Permission to Dance tour. 'We'll be releasing a new BTS album in the spring of next year. Starting in July, all seven of us will begin working closely together on new music. Since it will be a group album, it will reflect each member's thoughts and ideas," the group said in a statement. Until the release of their new album in 2026, the members are busy finishing their previous solo commitments. First Published:

Surprising 'entry-level' FIFO job paying up to $80 per hour: 'Super easy to get'
A FIFO recruiter has revealed the surprising job that can pay up to $80 per hour. There are plenty of ways to pull in big paydays in the mines, but many require a trade or speciality before you head up there. If you don't have either of those but still want to make some decent money, you can work as a bus driver. Recruiter Alana Mohi told Yahoo Finance that it all depends on where you go. "Bus drivers can still quite easily go and earn $110,000... it's definitely doable to go out there and get a job," she said. FIFO worker earning $100,000 a year for in-demand mining job: 'One of the best entry-level jobs' Centrelink warning over $1,321 cash boost now available for thousands: 'Can add up' Work-from-home debate fires up as Aussie exposes 'ridiculous' reality of return to office "It's classified as an entry-level job, because you need a little bit of experience, obviously, but all you need is your HR driver's license and the PTD authorisation." The PTD is a passenger transport driver authorisation, which is an annual necessity if you want to drive passengers for "hire or reward". Mohi said the salary can range for bus drivers from company to company and can go over the $80 per hour mark if you're doing night shifts. According to Indeed, the average base rate for a bus driver in Australia is $36 per hour. There are dozens of jobs available at the moment across the country for this profession, and one advert gave a taste of what a regular day looks like. "You will play a key role in safely transporting passengers to and from the village, mine site, and airport, ensuring safety and reliability," it said. "You'll be working an 11-hour shift on a 2:1 roster (2 weeks on, 1 week off)." In addition to driving the bus, you'll also be required to: Conduct daily vehicle inspections to ensure safety and cleanliness, and Support the village team with secondary tasks when required Jess Riches moved from the UK to get a job in the mines and wound up driving buses. She said she loved the job but warned that the summertime heat was "no joke". To get her role, she got her White Card, which is a standard and mandatory authorisation allowing you to be on a construction site, as well as her first aid, and police check. The UK native urged people with no experience driving buses to do training at MIRO in Perth before applying. The W1N W1N Recruitment founder said that getting into the FIFO realm can be difficult if you don't know where to start or what route to take. But she added that bus driving can be a great entry point that allows you to move into other parts of a mine site. "I wouldn't go out there saying, 'Every bus driver's earning this' because some of them are on shorter swings, or they're doing mostly the utility side of it," Mohi told Yahoo Finance. "But even one of the bus driving jobs that I was in, I was operating like a skip truck and stuff like that, and was clearing well over $130,000 so that's not hard to do. "Bus driving is one of the best jobs for somebody wanting an entry-level job and they'll generally put you on the smaller busses before you go into the big 56-seaters or bigger than that. "But it's super easy to get one of those jobs." She said that one of the biggest advantages of the gig was being in an air-conditioned vehicle away from the bulk of the in to access your portfolio
