Land sought to build ex-army welfare centre

Published on: Tuesday, May 27, 2025 Published on: Tue, May 27, 2025 Text Size: The medal recipients. Kota Kinabalu: The Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Association (PVATM) Sabah Branch continues to strengthen its development and welfare agenda for its members through several key initiatives currently underway. PVATM Sabah President Ruhimin Jaafar said one of the most important focuses at present is securing land for the construction of the PVATM Sabah Welfare Centre, which he described as an urgent necessity for the organisation's future. 'Initial efforts have already been initiated and received positive feedback from the Sabah Lands and Surveys Department. However, these efforts need to be intensified to expedite the process. 'The search for a site for the development of the welfare centre is among the main agendas being pursued and requires full support from all parties. 'We ask everyone to pray that this matter proceeds smoothly and is facilitated,' he said during the 43rd PVATM Sabah State Annual Delegates Conference 2025 here Sunday. Ruhimin also announced that a total of 10 members had been selected as recipients of the Pingat Setia Sentiasa Berjuang (PSSB) for this year, compared to only five recipients in the previous year. Advertisement 'The increase in the number of recipients indicates positive progress in recognising the service and sacrifices of our veterans, and the association will continue to endeavour to increase this quota in the future. 'All plans are subject to the organisation's strength and financial capacity, as each award involves expenditure that must be managed carefully and prudently. 'However, I am confident that the PVATM President will consider this matter, as there are still many deserving veterans who have yet to receive recognition,' he said. Also present were PVATM Malaysia President Datuk Shahrudin Omar and the Malaysian Armed Forces Veteran Affairs Department Director Major Ismail Mera. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Malaysia hopes for UN intervention to ease Pakistan-India tensions, says Defence Minister

JOHOR BARU: Malaysia hopes that the United Nations (UN) would take an active role in controlling rising tensions between Pakistan and India, as it monitors development in the South Asian continent. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said a good solution must be reached by the two countries to avoid an outbreak of war. "Both countries are friendly countries to Malaysia so we do not want the two to go to if there is a war, it will certainly have bad consequences, especially for the people of both countries," he said. He told reporters after officiating the 56th Johor State Annual Representative Conference of the Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Association (PVATM), here on Thursday (May 1). Pakistan on Thursday reportedly claimed that India is planning to launch a military attack on the country soon, based on intelligence warnings. This follows the escalation of tensions between the two nuclear-armed countries after a bloody attack in Indian-administered Kashmir on April 22 left 26 tourists dead. India identified three attackers, including two Pakistani nationals, as terrorists who were waging an armed insurgency in the Muslim-majority region while Islamabad denied any involvement and called for an independent investigation. Meanwhile, Mohamed Khaled said the ministry planned to reorganise associations involving armed forces veterans to ensure the effectiveness of the associations involved. He said there are currently 122 associations related to armed forces veterans, with some inactive and of small membership sizes. "So we want to reorganise so that the associations that are created can truly meet the needs of members and views on veterans' matters can be brought forward in an integrated manner," he said. He said this would simultaneously increase the effectiveness and attention received for the views and "voices" of veterans compared to each association operating alone. At the same event, Mohamed Khaled also announced an allocation of RM40,000 for painting and upgrading works at the PVATM Office in Johor Bahru as well as RM44,000 to carry out activities at the PVATM branch level in Johor. - Bernama
