PVATM urges public holiday on July 31 to honour Malaysia's military heroes

SIBU (Aug 2): The Sarawak Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Association (PVATM) has called on the federal government to declare July 31 a national public holiday in conjunction with Warriors' Day, in honour of the sacrifices made by Malaysia's military heroes. PVATM president Jimbau Galau said such recognition would not only pay tribute to the contributions of former soldiers but also foster a deeper sense of patriotism among Malaysians, especially the younger generation. 'Turning July 31 into a public holiday allows the nation to collectively reflect on the sacrifices of our warriors, whose sweat and blood safeguarded the peace we enjoy today,' he said. He was speaking after leading a gravesite visit to the late Corporal Paul Nyopis Noyeab, a recipient of the Pingat Gagah Berani (P.G.B.) at Kampung Rumih, Bau, on July 31. The visit, organised by PVATM Bau Branch, was attended by over 100 members from across the state, as well as villagers from the area. Jimbau added that having a public holiday would provide opportunities for schools, organisations, and communities to host activities such as memorial visits, seminars, and parades, reinforcing historical awareness and the value of national unity. 'We want Warriors' Day to be more than just a symbolic occasion. It should be a day that truly resonates with the people,' he said, expressing hope that the proposal would be considered by the federal government as a meaningful gesture to strengthen national identity. The gravesite visit was part of PVATM's initiative to honour Sarawakian veterans who served valiantly during the Malayan Emergency and other conflicts. The late Corporal Paul remains a source of pride for the state, with his courage and service continuing to inspire current and future generations through commemorative programmes like this.

King, Queen attend 2025 Warriors' Day celebration

PUTRAJAYA: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim and Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, King and Queen of Malaysia, today attended a parade held in conjunction with the 2025 Warriors' Day celebration at Dataran Pahlawan Negara here. The celebration, coordinated by the police, carried the concept of a static parade featuring detachments from the police, armed forces, Veterans Association of Malaysian Armed Forces (PVATM) and the Ex-Policemen Association of Malaysia (PBPM). The ceremony began with the playing of the national anthem, Negaraku, accompanied by the firing of a 21-gun salute by Major Hafizan Mat Ghani of the 41st Battery of the Royal Artillery Regiment (Ceremonial). His Majesty then inspected the main guard of honour. A total of 18 officers and 685 personnel from the police and armed forces participated in the parade, led by Superintendent Mohamad Ridzuan Roslan of the police. Also present were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin and Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail and Chief of Defence Force General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar were also in attendance. The ceremony proceeded with the sounding of the 'Last Post', as the Jalur Gemilang was lowered. This was followed by the recital of the poem "Darah Yang Terpercik di Baju" by police detective Sergeant Ardiansyah Wayang and Staff Sergeant Siti Nur Aini Jasni of the armed forces. The poem recounts the tragic ambush by communist terrorists on an armed convoy transporting patients from Baling, Kedah, to Pengkalan Hulu, Perak, on July 20, 1979. The incident claimed the lives of three armed forces personnel, namely Corporal Ramli Abdul Rashid, Trooper Azmi Rahman, and Trooper Abu Hassan Syeikh Daud. The ceremony continued with a special pantomime performance, "Zabri, Pejuang Sang Saka Biru", by the police and directed by GOF Central Brigade commander SAC Hakemal Hawari, depicting the heroic journey of VAT69 Commando ASP Mohd Zabri Abdul Hamid. The story of Mohd Zabri's struggle, famously known as the Legend of Kerambit Kembar, was brought to life through a 15-minute performance involving 142 policemen, followed by the presentation of an AI-generated video, a creative production by the police team based on real-life events. The pantomime narrated the story of the late Mohd Zabri, who was killed in a deadly ambush by communist terrorists in 1975. He was fatally injured after stepping on a booby trap while on a mission to intercept terrorists attempting to escape across the border. The booby trap severely injured his right ankle, leading to heavy blood loss. In his final moments, Mohd Zabri managed to deliver a message to his comrades, to continue the struggle, to track down and eliminate the enemies of the nation, even in his absence. The ceremony proceeded with the sounding of the Paluan Fajar, during which the Jalur Gemilang was hoisted, symbolising renewed spirit and strength for the nation's heroes to continue defending the country's sovereignty and peace. Warriors' Day is commemorated on July 31 each year to honour the struggles and sacrifices of the nation's security forces in safeguarding the country's sovereignty and peace. –Bernama

KAPIT (July 9): The Bujang Berani monument, depicting a Dayak warrior wielding the 'parang' (machete) and the 'terabai' (traditional shield), serves to honour the native men who had bravely fought for the country's freedom and sovereignty. The imposing statue, which stands near the historical Fort Sylvia at Jalan Kubu Lama here and overlooks the Rajang River, is a part of the Bujang Berani Square, where the works had kicked off two years ago. Recently, Councillor Martin Bilun – the Kapit branch chairman of the Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Association (PVATM) – carried out inspection on the just-erected structure, together with vice-chairman Peter Inggai and member Michael Ngui. 'The official unveiling ceremony will be conducted soon, and we have invited (Works Minister and Kapit MP) Dato Sri Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi to officiate at the event,' said Martin when contacted by The Borneo Post here. He hailed the statue as 'a dream come true' not only for the association, but more so for the Dayak veterans. 'This 'tugu' (monument) was proposed more than a decade ago, with the objective of honouring the bravery and sacrifices of our Dayak servicemen, many of whom had defended our motherland long before the birth of Malaysia. 'They sacrificed the comfort of civilian life to safeguard the nation's security and sovereignty. 'They served as Iban Trackers, Sarawak Rangers, Malaysian Rangers, with some in the British Army,' said Martin. In this regard, he expressed gratitude to the government, especially to Nanta and Deputy Minister in Sarawak Premier's Department (Native Customs and Laws) and Bukit Goram assemblyman Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyatm for their contributions towards realising the establishment of the Bujang Berani monument. Land sought to build ex-army welfare centre

Published on: Tuesday, May 27, 2025 Published on: Tue, May 27, 2025 Text Size: The medal recipients. Kota Kinabalu: The Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Association (PVATM) Sabah Branch continues to strengthen its development and welfare agenda for its members through several key initiatives currently underway. PVATM Sabah President Ruhimin Jaafar said one of the most important focuses at present is securing land for the construction of the PVATM Sabah Welfare Centre, which he described as an urgent necessity for the organisation's future. 'Initial efforts have already been initiated and received positive feedback from the Sabah Lands and Surveys Department. However, these efforts need to be intensified to expedite the process. 'The search for a site for the development of the welfare centre is among the main agendas being pursued and requires full support from all parties. 'We ask everyone to pray that this matter proceeds smoothly and is facilitated,' he said during the 43rd PVATM Sabah State Annual Delegates Conference 2025 here Sunday. Ruhimin also announced that a total of 10 members had been selected as recipients of the Pingat Setia Sentiasa Berjuang (PSSB) for this year, compared to only five recipients in the previous year. Advertisement 'The increase in the number of recipients indicates positive progress in recognising the service and sacrifices of our veterans, and the association will continue to endeavour to increase this quota in the future. 'All plans are subject to the organisation's strength and financial capacity, as each award involves expenditure that must be managed carefully and prudently. 'However, I am confident that the PVATM President will consider this matter, as there are still many deserving veterans who have yet to receive recognition,' he said. Also present were PVATM Malaysia President Datuk Shahrudin Omar and the Malaysian Armed Forces Veteran Affairs Department Director Major Ismail Mera. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
