Cavaliers Make Coaching Announcement on Tuesday
The Cleveland Cavaliers received some tremendous news ahead of Tuesday's Game 5 matchup against the Indiana Pacers. This comes in the form of Donovan Mitchell overcoming the ankle injury that forced him to exit their Game 4 loss on Sunday, allowing him to suit up for Tuesday's do-or-die clash. Mitchell might not be 100% at this point, but the fact that the Cavs get their best player back on the court for Game 5 is an undeniably significant development for them and their hopes to extend this second-round NBA playoffs series. Advertisement That wasn't the only bit of good news the Cavs received before the game. The team took to social media before tip-off to make a big announcement about head coach Kenny Atkinson. "Kenny Atkinson has won the 2024-25 Rudy Tomjanovich Award, which honors an NBA coach for his cooperation with the media and fans, as well as his excellence on the court!" the Cavs posted on X. "This season, Atkinson guided the Cavaliers to a 64-18 record, the best in the Eastern Conference, and was consistently thoughtful and engaging with the media." This is the first time Atkinson has won this award, which is given by the Professional Basketball Writers Association (PBWA). Atkinson succeeds Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, who bagged the title last season. Advertisement Atkinson has achieved this honor in his first year with the Cavs. He spent the last three seasons with the Warriors as an assistant on Kerr's coaching staff. However, they walked away from it with the top pick, which means they will have the right to take Duke phenom Cooper Flagg in next month's draft. It was a big piece of serendipity for a franchise that has been beleaguered ever since jettisoning generational superstar Luka Doncic in early February and suffering several injuries to key players afterward. Cavaliers Make Troubling Donovan Mitchell Announcement After Injury in Game 4
The Cleveland Cavaliers have had to battle through multiple injuries throughout their NBA playoff run. In their second-round series against the Indiana Pacers, key players such as Darius Garland, Evan Mobley and De'Andre Hunter have already missed multiple games. At this point, however, the Cavs appear to be facing their biggest injury dilemma yet, following an unfortunate turn of events in Game 4 on Sunday. Advertisement Donovan Mitchell was not able to finish the first half after suffering a concerning injury. He did not come out with the team following the halftime break, which added more concern to his status. Unfortunately, the Cavs have now announced that Mitchell will not be able to return to the contest after being diagnosed with a left ankle injury. Mitchell finished the game with 12 points on 3-of-11 shooting, one rebound, one steal and a block in 20 minutes of action. This is an undeniably tough blow for the Cavs, who could now be without their best player moving forward. Mitchell will surely undergo tests after this game, and the results of the same should determine his availability for Game 5 on Tuesday. As of writing, the Pacers are up 129-104 with a few minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Advertisement The silver lining for the Cavs here is that Game 5 shifts to Cleveland, which will give them a home-court advantage in the game.
