Versatile Jerar Encarnación returns to Giants after March surgery on his broken left hand
SAN FRANCISCO — Bob Melvin has been waiting for the chance to write Jerar Encarnación's name into San Francisco's lineup. The versatile Encarnación came off the 60-day injured list Monday and was available for the opener of a four-game series with the San Diego Padres at Oracle Park, though not yet in the starting lineup. Melvin hopes that he could start Tuesday — whether that's at first base or in right field.

Red Sox's Jarren Duran Drawing Trade Interest From Padres
Red Sox's Jarren Duran Drawing Trade Interest From Padres originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Red Sox aren't out of the playoff hunt yet, but rumors are swirling around some of their players being available for trade. The latest rumor has one of the team's best players drawing interest from a National League West team in dire need of outfield help. Advertisement According to a report from Dennis Lin of The Athletic, the San Diego Padres have expressed interest in trading for Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran. This wouldn't be the first time that the Padres were interested in Duran, either. Ahead of the 2024 season, the Padres were reportedly interested in the Red Sox outfielder. Now, a year later, the Padres are interested in Duran once again. For the Red Sox, Duran could be viewed as expendable with number one overall prospect Roman Anthony waiting in the Minor Leagues. Trading Duran would open a spot for Anthony, and would make the roster moves necessary to bring Anthony up a lot easier. On the Padres' side of things, they need a left fielder badly. After Gavin Sheets suffered multiple injuries crashing into the left-field wall, the need in left field became even more apparent. Boston Red Sox left fielder Jarren Duran (16) bats against the Baltimore Orioles during the first inning at Fenway Fluharty-Imagn Images The Padres already were looking for left-field help before the Sheets injury, and now it's one of the most glaring holes on a contending team around baseball. Advertisement Duran would fit the Padres' need perfectly. With the Red Sox having the top prospect in baseball waiting for a spot to open up, the move would make sense for both parties. However, moving off Duran would be a huge decision for the Red Sox, and the Padres might not have the ammo to acquire him. Duran is under team control through 2028 and is on a cheap deal for just $3.85 million in 2025. His contract, control, and age at 28 years old, combined with his talent, make Duran a valuable asset. To acquire him, the Padres would need to offload multiple top prospects, something they may not be willing to do after already investing so many prospects in win-now deals over recent years. Whether the Padres make a strong offer or not, the Red Sox have been receiving interest in Duran. With Anthony sitting in the Minor Leagues, a trade of Duran does make room for Anthony on the Major League roster. Padres eyeing Red Sox All-Star Jarren Duran as potential trade target
The Padres have eyes on Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran. The 28-year-old is is on San Diego's 'list of trade targets' according to The Athletic, as the team looks to bolster its offense, which has struggled to produce consistently. Per the report, the underperforming Red Sox (29-32) 'might consider Duran expendable,' especially with outfielder Roman Anthony — top overall prospect — dominating in Triple-A (.303 average, .922 OPS) and appearing ready for promotion to the big leagues. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect Sheets had been one of the Padres' most productive hitters to start the year with a team-high 34 RBIs, plus a .267 average and 11 home runs. But the Padres will also have to consider saving trade capital to pick up starting pitching, with starters Yu Darvish and Michael King on the injured list. Advertisement Their front office, headed by president of baseball operations A.J. Preller, will have to choose a direction ahead of the July 31 trade deadline. Duran, a lefty hitter known for his speed on the bases, enjoyed a career year with Boston in 2024, winning All-Star Game MVP and hitting .285 with 75 RBIs and 21 homers. This season, he's hitting .264 with 34 RBIs through 60 games, maintaining his value as an above-average outfielder — even if his stats have taken a dip from last season's breakout campaign. Serra, De La Salle win baseball section titles, now pursue CIF NorCal crowns
Two of the Bay Area's most storied baseball programs — Serra and De La Salle-Concord — won section titles Saturday on the rebound. Now each hopes to catapult to their ultimate goal: Northern California titles. The one-week CIF Regional playoffs get underway Tuesday with Division 1 top-seed De La Salle and No. 3 Padres hosting games. Serra (26-6) won their first Central Coast Section championship since 2009 with a 3-2 Division 1 win over Valley Christian at Excite Ballpark Stadium, riding a three-run fourth-inning rally and getting fine outings from winning pitcher Riley Lim back by two innings of scoreless relief by Nate Hui. Evan Bradshaw drove home the go-ahead run with an infield single and also made a key diving catch in the outfield. Serra boasts such alums as Barry Bonds, Jim Fregosi and James Outman. It now hosts sixth-seed College Park-Pleasant Hill (17-11) in a first-round game Tuesday. All first- and second-round games start at 4 p.m. De La Salle (26-4) won its 15th North Coast Section title and seventh in eight years with an 11-2 win over College Park at St. Mary's College. Stanford-bound shortstop Tyler Spangler continued a mammoth junior season with three hits including a pair of triples. Cal Poly-bound Antonio Castro added two hits and three RBIs. It was De La Salle's 31st NCS playoff win in the last 32 games, the lone setback being a 1-0 loss to Granada-Livermore in last year's title game. That contest took 15 innings and two days to complete. Granada also ended De La Salle's string of four straight Northern California playoff titles as well last season. 'Our whole goal is to get back the dogpile (celebration),' Spangler said after a semifinal win over Foothill-Pleasanton last week. That was secured largely Saturday with six runs in the second inning, with three more tacked on in the sixth. Half of De La Salle's 10 hits went for extra bases and winning pitcher Roman Bartosh allowed four hits in six innings before Mason Cortez pitched one scoreless inning. Softball roundup: Hayden Hummel, Peyton Tsao, Gabby Rocha and Isabella Sandoval drove in two runs apiece as second-seed St. Francis ended top seed Willow Glen-San Jose's undefeated season with a 9-6 CCS Open Division title win that took eight innings. The Lancers (27-3), the third seed, host No. 6 Rocklin (22-6) in a first-round NorCal game Tuesday. … Sophomore Lola Jones struck out seven and allowed six hits and added an RBI single, leading Hillsdale-San Mateo (19-9-1) to a CCS Division 2 title with a 4-1 win over San Mateo. … Liberty-Brentwood (23-4) won its third NCS title and first since 1997 with a 4-0 win over Casa Grande-Petaluma as Kate Skinner fired a two-hitter with 13 strikeouts. … Nicole DiMarco had a triple, homer and five RBIs leading Cardinal Newman-Santa Rosa (22-6) to a 12-8 NCS Division 2 title win over Carondelet-Concord. Acalanes baseball ends drought: The Dons of Lafayette (17-10) won their seventh NCS baseball title, but first since 2016 with a 7-1 Division 2 win over Rancho Cotate-Rohnert Park as Brady Quinn and Austin McManamon combined on a four-hitter. James Stadt had three hits and three RBIs and Jimmy Cusumano had a double, single and three RBIs. Acalanes, the sixth seed, travels to Northern Section power Chico (28-1), for a first-round NorCal D2 game. California baseball wins first: The Grizzlies from San Ramon (16-11) won their first NCS championship, with a 6-1 Division 3 title win over Marin Catholic-Kentfield as Ryan Giffins and Ryken Redondo combined on a three-hitter. Grayden Wright and Nolan Jess each drove in a pair of runs for California High, which is the eighth seed in the NorCal Division 3 tournament. The Grizzlies travel to top-seed Roseville (21-11). Track follow: Three Metro athletes were inadvertently left off the CIF State Track and Field medal list Monday, including girls high jump co-champion Lelani Laruelle, a junior from Monta Vista-Cupertino, who cleared 5 feet, 7 inches. Padres Reportedly Interested in Making Major All-Star Trade After Gavin Sheets Injury
Padres Reportedly Interested in Making Major All-Star Trade After Gavin Sheets Injury originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Make no mistake: the San Diego Padres still have their eyes set on another NL West crown, even after an inconsistent May and losing star pitcher Michael King to a shoulder injury. Advertisement It sounds like the Padres are willing to do whatever it takes to overtake the Los Angeles Dodgers, even turning their attention back to a familiar trade target. According to Padres reporter Dennis Lin, the club is interested in acquiring Boston Red Sox All-Star outfielder Jarren Duran. Lin said the Padres previously "expressed interest" in Duran before the 2024 season. Duran entered Monday hitting .264 with four home runs, 34 RBI, and a .718 OPS for the fourth-place Red Sox. The 28-year-old remains a potent speed thread, tallying 13 stolen bases and a league-high six triples. "Whether the Padres possess enough trade capital to acquire Duran — and leave enough resources for other needs — is another question," Lin wrote. Boston Red Sox left fielder Jarren DuranKen Blaze-Imagn Images Duran has primarily played left field this season, which understandably appeals to a Padres club desperately needing corner outfield help. Designated hitter Gavin Sheets played left field on Sunday and suffered a head contusion, a sore hip, and a jammed wrist and thumb after running into the wall. Advertisement The Padres could also end the Jayson Heyward experiment when he returns from a left oblique strain. Heyward owns a .494 OPS and -0.6 bWAR in 85 plate appearances. Duran's numbers are considerably down from last year's career season, when he posted 8.7 bWAR and led the majors in doubles (48) and triples (14). However, he's also a 28-year-old outfielder with potentially three seasons of team control remaining. The Red Sox have an $8 million club option on Duran for 2026, and there is no indication they won't pick it up. He also has two years of arbitration remaining. Lin suggested the Padres might include top shortstop prospect Leo De Vries and catcher Ethan Salas in a potential Duran deal. However, he also wrote that 'the organization's farm system has been thinned out over the past few years by a slew of win-now trades.' Advertisement San Diego is 33-24 and currently hold the NL's second Wild Card spot, two games behind the slumping Philadelphia Phillies.
