Broadway Box Office Has Finally Recovered, Overtaking Pre-Pandemic Returns for First Time
Last week, Broadway grosses for the season-to-date surpassed 2018-2019's record season-to-date box office for the first time. Total industry box office hit $1.8 billion for the season, propelled by hits such as Good Night, and Good Luck, starring George Clooney, which was last week's highest earner, with $3.8 million, followed by Othello, starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, with $3.2 million and Glengarry Glen Ross, starring Kieran Culkin, Bob Odenkirk and Bill Burr, with $2.4 million. More from The Hollywood Reporter Cynthia Erivo to Star in One-Woman Version of 'Dracula' in London Tom Francis Is Ready to Flex His Muscles for Hollywood Nicole Scherzinger on How Her "Pop Star Mentality" Prepared Her for 'Sunset Blvd.,' "Manifesting" a Film Adaptation and First Tony Nom Good Night, and Good Luck and Glengarry Glen Ross both announced that they had recouped their capitalizations, with Glengarry Glen Ross breaking the Palace Theatre box office record with a gross of $2.4 million. Some shows also appeared to get a boost from the Tony nominations, including Death Becomes Her, which saw its grosses shoot up close to $270,000 from the prior week to $1.3 million, Buena Vista Social Club, which saw a close to $90,000 gain to $1.2 million, Maybe Happy Ending, which shot up close to $100,000 to $1 million. All three tied for having the most Tony nominations. Among the plays, Purpose, which is Tony nominated and was also awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Drama, saw its grosses increase by about $100,000 to $522,691 last week, and the Tony-nominated play John Proctor is The Villain, starring Sadie Sink, also increased close to $100,000 to $596,511. The milestone of surpassing the 2018-2019 season is significant as that season is the highest on record for Broadway grosses and attendance and has been viewed as a benchmark to measure post-pandemic recovery. At this point in the 2018-2019 season, Broadway had brought in $1.79 million. However, Jason Laks, president of the Broadway League noted that the numbers are driven by a few productions – namely the recent celebrity-driven titles, with high ticket prices – and that otherwise the economics of Broadway are making it harder for productions to survive. Othello commanded the highest average ticket price on Broadway last week at $387. 'Broadway audiences are responding to the remarkable and diverse slate of productions this season. These grosses and attendance numbers are a testament to, and a reflection of, the efforts of every person working both on stage and off to turn the dream of each show into a reality,' Laks said in a statement. 'While we celebrate this milestone, we also need to be clear-eyed about where this industry stands today. Among other factors, these record grosses have been buoyed by the tremendous success of a few specific productions this season, without which we would still trail our pre-pandemic numbers. While we are, of course, thrilled by their successes, we also have to look at our industry as a whole,' the statement reads. 'Every show, no matter how acclaimed, is grappling with rising costs across every facet of production. Shows have an ever-shorter window to get on their feet, find an audience, and determine their future. This is a major challenge shows face as they seek out investors, without which a production will never make it to the stage,' Laks said. For actors sojourning on Broadway, TV stints are a hard act to follow
Consider the current revival of 'Glengarry Glen Ross,' David Mamet's 1984 drama about skeevy real-estate salesmen trying to stay afloat in a shark-infested environment. Slated to run at the Palace Theatre through June 28, the play stars Bob Odenkirk, Kieran Culkin, Michael McKean, and Bill Burr. 'Glengarry Glen Ross' is a juicy slice of early Mamet, and it's an excellent production, no question, as directed by Patrick Marber. Advertisement But does the play rank ahead of the best episodes of 'Breaking Bad' (where Odenkirk played sleazy lawyer Saul Goodman), or the spinoff ' No, no, and no. Jean Smart is starring in a solo show on Broadway titled 'Call Me Izzy,' described as 'a darkly comedic story about one woman in rural Louisiana who has a secret that is both her greatest gift and her only way out.' The play, written by Jamie Wax and directed by Sarna Lapine, with music by T Bone Burnett, just began preview performances and is not yet open to the press. Advertisement As with anything involving Smart, 'Call Me Izzy' is a must-see, but it's very hard to envision it being the role of Smart's career. That superlative currently describes her ' In a remarkably gutsy move, Sarah Snook, who played Shiv Roy on 'Succession,' is making her Broadway debut in 'The Picture of Dorian Gray," a one-woman show in which she plays 26 characters. I haven't seen it yet, but hope to do so. But I doubt that any of those 26 characters can do or say anything that will leave me as shaken as Snook did in that ferocious balcony scene between Shiv and her husband, Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen). The seething contempt Snook brought across in just a glance at her loathed husband amounted to the kind of master class in acting that most performers can only dream about — and she didn't need a stage to do it. Concerts to see this week: Tribute to Slim Dunlap, Post Malone, Tennis
Farewell tours, stadium shows, and a memorial for a beloved Minnesota musician highlight the concert calendar this week. Here are the shows happening around the Twin Cities throughout the week of May 19. Monday, May 19, at First Avenue Local musicians, artists, and fans are giving Bob "Slim" Dunlap the tribute he deserves. Following his death in December at age 73, a memorial and tribute concert has been organized by members of his family. Dunlap was best known for his time playing guitar in The Replacements. He joined the group in 1987, replacing founding guitarist Bob Stinson. He's also fondly remembered for a pair of solo albums released in the '90s that didn't break through, but found an audience that has held them up for years as underappreciated gems. (That audience notably includes Bruce Springsteen.) The Celebration of Life will feature performances from Trailer Trash, The Cactus Blossoms (duo), an ensemble going by the Slimboree Singers, and other special guests, including Curtiss A, Dave Boquist, Gini Dodds, John Eller, The Daily Show co-creator Lizz Winstead, Brad Zellar, and members of the Slim Dunlap Band. Tuesday, May 20, at Palace Theatre The elder statesmen of industrial rock are shingin a light on their often overlooked early work. Al Jourgensen and co. will focus on a pair of albums, With Sympathy and Twitch, during this tour. Those first two albums were closer to synth pop than the dark industrial rock that Ministry would later become known for. They'll be joined by My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult and Die Krupps at the Palace Theatre. Tuesday, May 20, at U.S. Bank Stadium The "Circles" singer's "BIG ASS Stadium Tour" is rolling into U.S. Bank Stadium with Jelly Roll and Sierra Ferrell (who headlines Surly Festival Field later in the summer). Malone is promising a mix of music from across his career, including F-1 Trillion, his Grammy-winning shift into country music released last year. Wednesday, May 21, at First Avenue The husband and wife duo of Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore recently announced this would be their final tour as Tennis. Their show at First Avenue comes after the recent release of Face Down in the Garden, which will be their final studio album. "The highs and lows of touring are unnatural, disorienting," Moore said on the release of "12 Blown Tires," the first single from the indie-pop duo's swan song. "On the shoulder of I-40, I began writing the lyrics to '12 Blown Tires.' It is a constellation of memories from the road, and of our marriage, two endeavors that are completely, hopelessly entangled." Saturday, May 24, at Orpheum Theatre The Grammy-winning rapper and actor might seem like a surprising fit with the Orpheum Theatre. The Hennepin Arts calendar isn't typically stocked with hip-hop, but, at a minimum, it'll offer a unique way to experience the deep catalog of the "It's a Vibe" on Monday, May 19: Bob 'Slim Dunlap Tribute and Memorial at First Avenue Momma with Wishy at Fine Line Willie Wisely & Tommy Barbarella Organ Combo at The Dakota Joe Kelly with Robyn Jamner, The Daily Norm, and Ambient Toad at The White Squirrel Bar Concerts on Tuesday, May 20: Post Malone with Jelly Roll at U.S. Bank Stadium Ministry with My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult and Die Krupps at Palace Theatre Bartees Strange with Sloppy Jane at Fine Line Deb Talan at The Parkway Theater Matt Andersen at The Dakota New Band Night: Bridge Band, Eldest Daughter, Nobody From Nowhere, and Quietchild at Green Room Cheap Bouquet residency and single release with TimIsARocker and Lost Island Society at The White Squirrel Bar The New Havoline Supremes at The White Squirrel Bar (free)Concerts on Wednesday, May 21: Tennis with Billie Marten at First Avenue Alpha Consumer at Icehouse's Starlight Room Rachel Chinouriri at Fine Line Magic Castles, Flavor Crystals, and Michael Moore at Zhora Darling En El Momento w/ Medium Zach (Feat.
