AFL club rocked by devastating family tragedy
The Gold Coast Suns have been rocked by the death of Jackson Graham, the older brother of their emerging star Will Graham. With the funeral on Thursday, senior coach Damien Hardwick has already moved his scheduled media conference this week to Wednesday. And on Saturday in the game against Carlton at Marvel Stadium, players wore black armbands to pay tribute to Jackson. Jackson, 22, died unexpectedly last Wednesday. He was two years older than Will and a much-loved member of Will's former football club, Palm Beach Currumbin. Jackson was also a gun junior surfer. He joined the World Surf League's junior tour in 2020 after winning Queensland's prestigious Mark Richards Shield championship for under-19s (alongside Joshua Boyle) in 2019. In that game he booted two goals and had seven tackles to help his team secure the 10-point win in Darwin. He had another setback recently when he injured his hamstring in the VFL. A gofundme page has been set up for Jackson and had raised more than $61,000 at the time of writing. High-profile Gold Coast stars such as Ben King, Touk Miller and Mac Andrew had made donations to the gofundme, as had Hardwick. 2025 Langer Trophy live stream: Palm Beach Currumbin SHS v Keebra Park SHS, Round 7
The annual Gold Coast derby takes on a whole new meaning as the wildest week in Langer Trophy history kicks off. Any of four schools finish second on the ladder, with a guaranteed finals bye week, or miss out on the finals entirely. It sounds absurd but a season of twists and turns has forged an almighty ladder logjam where only minor premier Keebra Park is safe from being bundled out of the finals the week before they begin. That is why Palm Beach Currumbin coach Tim Maccan has hailed the Langer Trophy as Australia's greatest school footy competition, and why his school will fight to break arch rival Keebra Park's unbeaten streak at Burleigh on Tuesday. The clash will be exclusively live streamed FREE on KommunityTV and A Reds win of any scale will lock in a finals bye or a semi-final against the Titans Cup winners, and Langer Trophy finals qualifiers, Marymount College, as reward for finishing second or third. A heavy loss could see Palm Beach tumble out of the tournament's top five and end its national championship defence by Wednesday. 'It's always a special occasion playing Keebra Park … but it does have a bit of extra special meaning this week,' Maccan said on the eve of the Gold Coast's biggest school sporting rivalry. 'It will be the biggest games of some of these kids' lives playing for the school, 100 per cent. 'This potentially could be their last game of senior footy for their school so it's definitely going to have some meaning, that's for sure. 'It's basically a grand final because if we don't play well and put ourselves in a position to win the game, we will fall down the ladder or possibly even out of the finals altogether. 'The boys are aware of that and know they have to play well.' Defeat would give the school a best-case scenario finish of fourth but the possibility exists (if PBC lose, Marsden beat Mabel Park, Ipswich beat Stretton and Wavell tie Redcliffe) that the national champions could be eliminated on points differential. Maccan is keeping it simple for his students: take the fight to Keebra in the biggest game the school has played since last year's national decider and the equation will take care of itself. 'It's really encouraging that the competition is so tight,' the coach said. 'It just goes to show the southeast Queensland competition is probably the best in Queensland and possibly in Australia. The quality of teams and the tightness of the competition, the evidence is there for the latter. 'It's definitely a game on the calendar the boys look forward to, and it does draw a big crowd from both schools, but with where we're sitting in third spot we need to put in a good performance to make sure we cement a position in the finals. 'It would be good to finish second (on the Langer ladder) but more importantly we just want to finish on a high note.' Titans-contracted backrower Kobe Hauraki will undergo a fitness test to make his Langer Trophy debut for the school against Keebra. Originally published as

AFL Rising Star Round 21: Gold Coast Suns key forward Ethan Read on Nick Riewoldt comparisons
Tagged with the unenviable title of 'Unicorn' before he had played a single senior game, Gold Coast key forward Ethan Read says it has nevertheless been hard work and hunger which has earned him a regular place in the Suns' best-23 this season. The 20-year-old Palm Beach Currumbin product capped a strong month of consistent form by booting 2.2 and clunking nine marks in the Suns' rout of Richmond at the weekend, earning him the AFL Rising Star nomination for Round 21. Read's cameo offered another glimpse into a not-too-distant future in which the 202cm spearhead, who also boasts the 10th-fastest 2km time trial (5m56s) in AFL combine history, harnesses his raw athleticism to become one of the game's most versatile threats. 'It feels good to obviously get a bit of recognition,' Read said on Monday of his Rising Star nomination. 'I've put in a mountain of work over the past 6-8 weeks so to get that recognition is always good.' The AFL world is often impatient when it comes to players harnessing their potential and Read says he still has plenty of growth left to come. But with a checklist of improvements in his back pocket and a coaching staff that sees greatness within him, the Suns Academy graduate has made giant strides since joining the club as the ninth overall pick in the 2023 draft. Since the start of last season Read has packed on more than 15kg to his two-metre frame while still retaining an elite running ability perhaps not seen from a key forward since St Kilda champion Nick Riewoldt. 'Coming into the AFL there is a different level of physicality and I've gone to work on that … trying to stand up against these more physical defenders, that is one of the main things I need to focus on and I think I'm getting better at that every week,' he said. 'I think as much as I can use my strengths to my advantage it will only pay off. He (Riewoldt) is obviously a very good player and was for so long. He is someone I try to model my game off. Just outworking my opponent, grinding them down slowly. 'I definitely think my goal kicking needs a bit of work … I've been a bit inaccurate in front of goal this year (15.16) and that is something I'm working on.' Before the Suns settled on Read as a key forward there was a genuine belief he could play just about any key position on the ground, such was his versatility. Although he was considered the top ruck prospect in the 2023 draft class, the Suns were already well-stocked in that area with Jarrod Witts and Ned Moyle. But with coach Damien Hardwick preferring to play just one out-and-out ruckman, the onus has often fallen to Read to spell Witts when the Suns' incumbent tap artist is taking a breather. The two gentle giants have formed a close bond over the past two years, helped by the fact they live around the corner from each other. Read said the two catch up after every game to reflect and just talk about life. 'It's a little ritual we have that I love,' he said. 'Since (Witts) stepped down from the captaincy I think he has loved seeing the younger boys develop and he has taken us under his wing. It's something I know he enjoys. 'He helps me with footy but (also) … how to be a good person. He's a good father figure for me. He's a very good person and I love hanging around him.'
