From America's Shopping Mall King, A $10 Million California Vineyard Estate

Nature provides wonders on California's Palos Verdes peninsula. Villa Oneira has been here since 1969, now fully refurbished and extended to five acres with a curtilage planted for privacy. Strand Hill Properties It almost never happens. A property comes to market textured with two of the great intertwining themes of the American story. The first narrative starts in the 1960s, with the son of a German immigrant standing on a patch of scrub near the ocean in south-west Los Angeles. This is the house that Ernst built. All undeveloped land translates as opportunity, and one man who was building a business out of that proposition in 1967 was Ernest (Ernst) W. Hahn, a developer who'd just opened his first shopping mall in Santa Barbara. It was a mall that would come to change the way Americans went shopping. At La Cumbre Plaza, Hahn merged retail space with opportunities for fun and community activity—skating rinks, bowling alleys, day-care. He spread that vision into 29 brand-new shopping centers, making him the biggest mall developer in the western United States. He sold the company for $270 million—in 1980. American story number 1: entrepreneurial endeavor geared with new ideas. The house that Ernst Hahn built for his family in 1968 on that patch of scrub was also forward-thinking. Forget traditional design, Hahn chose to ride the waves of mid-century modern style. The plot on Rolling Hills on the Palos Verdes peninsula was ideal for the architectural movement's articulated statement of indoor-outdoor living, with the bonus of sunsets over the Pacific, and the Hollywood sign behind. Natural wood and stone, plus floor-to-ceiling glass, were central to the language of mid-century modern design. The current owners' sympathetic renovation in 2017 maintains authenticity, while upgrading facilities throughout for current times. Strand Hill Properties The property is for sale today, listed at a smidge under $10 million by Lily Liang of Strand Hill Properties. It's grown with the times—but not at the expense of its original design. And herein American story number 2: regard for valued history combined with the will to improve. Since purchasing the home in 2000, the current owners have added features inside and out that maintain the mid-century modern charm while increasing livability for our present age. Primary here was their decision to purchase adjacent land that increased the holding to a substantial five acres. Meticulous landscaping includes a clipped, box-planted garden, vibrant orchards of citrus, and a deep olive grove. The latter provides a year-round supply of your own olive oil. But the standout that surprises, impresses and delivers in equal measure is a fully operational vineyard of 2,500 productive French Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines on the estate's south-west facing slopes. Establishing a vineyard in your own garden would be a Herculean task. Inheriting one in full swing is a miraculous gift, especially when it comes with a solid customer list for the finished product. Wine aficionados will respect the provenance of the 1,250 Chardonnay vines, planted in 2006 from French clones. The 1,250 Pinot Noir vines planted two years later are producing exceptional bottles too. With a yearly yield of 275 cases, the customer list for the Villa Oneira label includes local restaurants and hotels. Strand Hill Properties Placid views of the sweeping coastline make the lawn-front terrace perfect for entertaining alfresco. Strand Hill Properties So here in this corner of California, with the citrus scents of the Mediterranean wafting through the terraces and open windows, is an opportunity beyond rare. And the distinctly European feel is no accident either, because the owners are Greek. More on that later... Villa Oneira, meaning House of Dreams in Greek, exudes the scale of an estate larger than its five acres. The sloping levels of landscaping create expansive vistas, and walking up the curving gated driveway you come across hidden additions. A stable block here, a tennis court there, separate guest/staff accommodation. In 2017, a refurbishment across the 6,200-square-foot interior of this five-bed, five-bath home brought everything up to speed. Mid-century modern kitchens were born functional. Here Wolf, Sub-Zero and Miele mark the quality of improvements. If the pool, spa, wine cellar, outdoor kitchen and firepit are expected delights, how about (continuing the Greek connection) a chapel in the grounds, one modeled on a small church in Athens from 1600? As night falls, the pool ushers in a calm, relaxing end to the day at Villa Oneira. Strand Hill Properties The man who revolutionized American shopping laid the first stone of this spectacular property. But it's the current owners who have transformed it, over the past 25 years, into one of the most desirable homes in one of the most prestigious gated communities in Los Angeles. It's time for their story to begin a new chapter elsewhere—and for the next custodians of Villa Oneira to begin their own. Lily Liang holds the listing for Villa Oneira, priced at $9,968,000. Police identify 3 sets of human remains found along shoreline in Palos Verdes Estates

Police have identified three sets of human remains that were found along the shoreline in Palos Verdes Estates. The remains, all stemming from separate missing persons cases, have been under investigation since 2023. In January 2021, Mark Paulson was reported missing after he failed to return from a boating trip out of Redondo Beach. He was last heard from when he reported engine trouble with his boat and expressed concern about being blown out to sea. A search effort involving the U.S. Coast Guard, Harbor Patrol, and Los Angeles County lifeguards was conducted, but Paulson was not found. Two years later in January 2023, a human femur was located off the shoreline. Through DNA matching, Palos Verdes police confirmed the remains linked to Paulson. 'Based on the totality of the circumstances, there is no suspicion of foul play,' investigators said. 'He would have been 68 years old.' In November 2024, a human skull and a bone were located and have been identified as Raymond Simeroth, who would be 57 years old today. Simeroth was believed to be experiencing homelessness before his death; detectives said there was no suspicion of foul play. In December 2024, a fishing vessel with two people onboard was reported missing from San Pedro amid dangerous surf conditions. The two men didn't return after leaving on a small boat from Cabrillo Beach on Dec. 23. A search effort was initiated and on Dec. 25, their boat was found shipwrecked along the shore on the 1700 block of Paseo Del Mar. The next day, two partial sections of lower extremities were discovered on the shoreline. On June 18, 2025, police confirmed the remains belonged to Zhaoliang Tang, 62, one of the missing fishermen. Any remains associated with the second missing fisherman have not been found. Based on the evidence, detectives determined there was no reason to suspect foul play at this time. Police have notified the families of all three people following the confirmed DNA matches. 'The Palos Verdes Estates Police Department remains committed to thorough investigations that help bring answers and closure to families affected by tragedy,' said Chief Luke Hellinga. 'While the circumstances surrounding each case are heartbreaking, we hope that these identifications provide a measure of peace to the loved ones who have endured uncertainty and loss.' SoCalGas to begin restoration process for Rancho Palos Verdes neighborhood

After roughly eight months, the first homes in Rancho Palos Verdes could have their natural gas service restored by July. The restoration process will begin on May 27 in the Seaview neighborhood, specifically homes on Dauntless Exultant and Admirable Drives, according to the utility company SoCalGas. The process is expected to finish in about four to five weeks. Once completed, SoCalGas crews will evaluate the homes along Palos Verdes Drive South and determine if they can restore services to residents there. The utility company added that engineers are developing designs and plans to restore service to Portuguese Bend Beach Club communities and Rolling Hills. "We are grateful to these communities for their patience during what we know has been a difficult time," said Maria Martinez, director of gas engineering. "Given the sustained decreases in land movement, we look forward to the safe restoration of natural gas service for those who are ready to reconnect." Over the last two years, land movement has severely damaged roads, homes and utilities in Rancho Palos Verdes, eventually leading the region's major natural gas and electricity providers to shut off their services to hundreds of residents. Since August, the Portuguese Bend slide has impacted about 650 homes. The ongoing natural disaster prompted FEMA and the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services to implement a $42 million voluntary buyout program, allowing residents to sell their homes at "fair market value." In October, geologists gave residents a small glimmer of hope after confirming that the slide had decelerated from an average of 13 inches a week to 8 inches, a roughly 38% decrease. Further studies conducted by researchers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory showed that the movement slowed to about 4 inches a week in the fall of 2024. SoCalGas stressed that if land movement increases in the future, the company may be forced to shut off services again. For more information about the restoration process, click here.

Police investigating possible child-luring attempt in Palos Verdes Estates

Police are investigating reports of a possible child-luring attempt in the Palos Verdes Estates area on Friday. They say that it happened at around 3:45 p.m. in the 2400 block of Via Pacheco, where a 10-year-old boy was walking home from Lunada Bay Elementary School, according to a release from Palos Verdes police. "He was approached by a female driver who offered him a ride twice and stated she would text his mother," the release said. The boy told police that she was the only person he could see inside of the car. He refused her requests, at which time a good Samaritan walking his dog through the area intervened. He asked the boy if he knew the woman. "The child told the good Samaritan that he did not," police said. "The unidentified good Samaritan told the child to go home as he talked to the driver." Police said that the boy made it home safely and reported the incident to his parents, who then contacted them. Arriving officers could not find the suspect or the good Samaritan. They continue to search for both as their investigation remains ongoing. The suspect is described as a woman between 30 and 50 years old with a medium build and brown hair. They believe she was driving a newer-model SUV similar to a Kia EV9. The good Samaritan is descbried as a man in his 70s who was wearing a baseball hat and black sunglasses. He was walking a dog similar to a white Labrador retriever. Police alerted the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District of the incident. "We take the safety of our children seriously and urge parents to remain vigilant, talk with their children about safety, and report any suspicious activity," police said in a statement. "We also ask that if you see something, say something. The PVEPD continues to investigate the incident. Let's work together to keep our community safe." Anyone who knows more is urged to contact detectives at (310) 378-4211.

Southern California police looking to identify alleged child lurer, good Samaritan who intervened

Police are searching for a woman who reportedly tried to lure a child into her car in Palos Verdes Estates, and they are also looking for a good Samaritan who stepped in to help the child. According to a news release issued by the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department, a 10-year-old boy was walking home from Luanda Bay Elementary School around 3:45 p.m. Friday when he was approached by a female driver who twice offered him a ride and said she would text his mother. The interaction took place in the 2400 block of Via Pacheco, approximately half a mile from the elementary school campus, and the boy told authorities that the woman who spoke to him was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Man kidnapped from West L.A. home, dumped at gas station 22 miles away 'The child refused [to enter the woman's vehicle], and a good Samaritan who was walking his dog nearby asked if [the boy] knew the driver…the child told the good Samaritan that he did not,' the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department release reads. 'The unidentified good Samaritan told the child to go home as he talked to the driver. The child was able to run home safely and report the incident to his parents.' Upon receiving the call, officers immediately rushed to the scene; however, they could not locate the female motorist nor the man who helped the boy. Detectives are seeking information on both of their identities and released the following descriptions: Female motorist: Black female, approximately 30 to 50 years old, medium build, brown hair Female vehicle: Light blue, newer model SUV similar to a Kia EV9 Good Samaritan: White male, approximately 70 years old, wearing a baseball cap and black sunglasses, walking a white lab Based on information provided and descriptions obtained, PVEPD contacted the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District – of which Luanda Bay Elementary is a part of – to assist in their investigation, and neighboring law enforcement jurisdictions have also been alerted to the incident. Notifications to parents will be made by the district, police added. Man, 46, sought by authorities and family after not being seen for over a week No further details surrounding the active investigation were immediately released.
