Officials told to focus on village sanitation management
Ongole: Prakasamdistrict collector A Thameem Ansariya has directed officials to prioritise sanitation work in villages and warned of strict action against officers who show negligence in hygiene management. On Tuesday morning, Collector Ansariya visited Purimetla, Kellampalli, and Pedda Ullagallu villages in Mundlamuru mandal to inspect sanitation management and the need-based primary survey under the P4 policy. She gathered detailed information from officials about the implementation of these programmes. During her visit to Purimetla village, the Collector emphasised that Deputy MPDOs and Panchayat secretaries must conduct daily field visits to ensure proper sanitation management. She ordered that door-to-door garbage collection should be actively maintained, and collected waste should be properly processed. She made it clear that action will be taken against officials who show negligence in sanitation management. With the onset of the rainy season, she stressed that Panchayat Raj department officials are responsible for ensuring safe drinking water supply to residents. The collector issued directives to ensure that water pipeline systems remain leak-free, to chlorinate overhead tanks following government guidelines regularly, and to provide quality drinking water through taps. She instructed MPDOs to coordinate with panchayat secretaries, ANMs, and medical health staff to prevent disease outbreaks during the monsoon season. She ordered systematic cleaning of overhead tanks, prevention of open defecation near pump sets and borewells, and necessary repairs to prevent sewage water from mixing with drinking water pipelines. The Collector interacted with villagers to assess sanitation management and the performance of government welfare programmes and services. She directed officials to work toward enhancing public satisfaction with government services. As part of the P4 programme, she reviewed the need-based primary survey conducted in the village. Speaking with identified beneficiary families, she explained that Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu introduced the P4 programme to eliminate economic inequalities and create a poverty-free society. At Kellamapalli village, the Collector honoured Nidamanuru Srinivasa Rao with a shawl for adopting 10 families under the P4 programme. She also inspected the waste-to-wealth centre and vermicompost pits at Pedda Ullagallu, gathering details about daily door-to-door garbage collection, staffing, and waste segregation processes. The inspection was accompanied by Ongole RDO Lakshmi Prasanna, District Panchayat CEO Chiranjeevi, DPO Venkat Naidu, Tehsildar Lakshminarayana, MPDO Sridevi, and other mandal officials.

Uttarakhand HC flags voter list duplication ahead of panchayat polls, seeks SEC report in a week
DEHRADUN: The Uttarakhand High Court has intensified its scrutiny of alleged discrepancies in voter lists for the upcoming Panchayat elections, slated to begin in two phases from July 24. Amid challenging weather conditions, the court on Tuesday heard a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) from Uttarkashi, specifically addressing these anomalies. Following the hearing, the High Court issued a clear directive to the State Election Commission, demanding a comprehensive report on the matter within one week. This swift intervention underscores the judiciary's urgency in ensuring the integrity of the electoral process ahead of the crucial local body polls. This is not the first instance of the High Court intervening in voter registration issues for the state's elections. Earlier, in a significant ruling based on a petition filed by Shakti Singh Barthwal, the court had already mandated stringent action. That order explicitly prohibited candidates from contesting elections if their names were found to be registered in two separate voter lists, emphasising the court's commitment to fair and transparent electoral practices. The current PIL, filed by Ram Singh of Barkot, Uttarkashi, further intensifies scrutiny on the accuracy of voter rolls. Singh's petition highlighted that while Barkot Nagar Palika has a population of 10,555, the initial voter list comprised 10,321 individuals. Subsequently, approximately 1,000 additional voters were included without proper identification of their original registration. An investigation by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) confirmed these concerns, identifying a staggering 2,695 voters whose names appeared on two separate voter lists.

GO 49 to create new tiger conservation reserve kept in abeyance over Adivasi concerns
The State government on Monday (July 21) declared that the proposal to create Kumurambheem Conservation Reserve — tiger corridor area connecting Kawal Tiger Reserve in Telangana and Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra — is being kept in abeyance. The State government's decision comes in the wake of concerns raised by tribals and public representatives across tribal areas and detailed discussions held with various stakeholders. The GO.49 dated May 30, 2025, issued by Environment, Forests, Science & Technology department, potentially displaces tribal residents in more than 330 villages from their traditional habitat and restricts their forest rights and livelihoods. It aims at converting 1.49 lakh hectares across multiple forest ranges in Kumurambheem-Asifabad district, including Asifabad, Kerameri, Rebbena, Tiryani, Kagaznagar, Sirpur, Karjelli, Bejjur, and Penchikalpet into the 'Kumurambheem Conservation Reserve' as an extension to Kawal Tiger Reserve. Adivasi organisations who led sustained protests had maintained that the order was violative of their rights as per Panchayats Extension to Scheduled Areas (PESA) Act, 1996, that aims at empowering tribal communities in the country's Scheduled Areas. The government, sensing widespread protests, called for a report from the District Collector to address the situation comprehensively. Later, the situation was also studied and reviewed by Minister for Forests Konda Surekha, Adilabad District In-charge Minister Jupally Krishna Rao and Minister for Panchayat Raj Dansari Anasuya. According to officials, the findings and recommendations were submitted to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy by the District Collector on July 11, and the decision to withhold the order until further notice followed on Monday. Ms. Surekha stated: 'Congress government is people's government. We will never take any decision that harms the rights or livelihoods of Adivasis and tribal communities. The concerns of the local people have been heard, and action has been taken accordingly. The welfare of every citizen, especially our tribal brothers and sisters, remains our top priority.'
