‘The Pitt' and ‘The Residence' Costume Designer on Making Noah Wyle Look ‘Worn Out' and Sherlock Inspiration for Uzo Aduba's Look
Having worked on 'E.R' and 'Presidio Med,' costume designer Lyn Paolo felt she didn't feel the need to do another medical drama. But when she read the scripts for 'The Pitt' by former 'E.R.' colleagues and producers John Wells and Noah Wyle, she couldn't turn it down. 'The scripts were brilliant, and they're all so passionate about the project and highlighting the people that take care of us.' More from Variety 'Paradise,' 'The Residence' and 'Zero Day' Production Designers on Recreating The White House for TV 'The Pitt' Star Supriya Ganesh on Wanting to See More of Samira's Personal Life in Season 2 and Using She/They Pronouns: 'Hey, I'm Queer. See Me' TV Bosses Behind 'The Pitt,' 'Doc' and More Examine the Rise of the Medical Drama: 'The Stakes Are Clear' The HBO Max series takes place within the course of one 15-hour shift at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. Paolo's challenge was to make her costumes look and feel real. Paolo describes Wyle's Dr. Michael Robbie's look as 'downtrodden and worn out.' His Beers of the Burgh hoodie was 'trashed. His pants weren't new either,' Paolo says. In comparison, the new people to the trauma center came in with a fresh and crisp look. 'We slowly aged everything all the way through the season,' she says, noting how there was a lot of meticulous detail. Shoes were an important part of 'The Pitt's' detail. Paolo notes how each principal had their brand and 10 pairs. The number was necessary for the season's shoot and to show how the shoes aged over the 15-hour shift. But Paolo didn't just give actors shoes to wear. 'We consciously spoke to each actor individually and said to them, 'Tell me about your feet. What are the problems? What are the good things? What are the bad things? What can you see yourself wearing for nine months and knowing that you're going to be on your feet 12 hours a day, every day.'' She adds that every single character has their own distinct shoe. But there was also meticulous detail on Netflix's 'The Residence.' 'It's a different kind of detail. Why are the Australians in navy blue tuxedos and the Americans in black tuxedos?' 'The Residence' follows Uzo Aduba as Cordelia Cupp, who is tasked with solving a murder at the White House, and everyone, including the staff and guests, are all suspects. Production designer Francois Audouy recreated the White House right down to the yellow and blue rooms, as well as state rooms, leaving little room for Paolo to play with. With most of her color choices eliminated, Paolo would buy fabric swatches and hold them up against color palettes on the wall. 'We didn't want Uzo disappearing against a wall,' she says. Paolo spent time putting together Cordelia's look, and getting it right was vital. She compares the process to a jigsaw puzzle. She knew she wanted something iconic. As a huge murder mystery fan, Paolo says she found inspiration in her love for Sherlock Holmes, 'I went back to the original Sherlock, Basil Rathbone from the 1930s, and just did all this research.' Eventually, she found a 1930s-style hunting jacket that matched Cordelia's quirky personality. In addition to that, Paolo also leaned on her love for Katherine Hepburn. 'I felt like a Hepburn pant, a man's brogue, and a tweed hunting jacket.' Of course, Aduba loved it, and that became Cordelia's signature look. As with 'The Pitt,' it was all about detail for 'The Residence.' Cordelia needed to stand out and was the center of that world. But each group also needed to have their own distinct feeling. 'For all of our background artists, we couldn't use prime colors because I didn't know who was going to be in which room. So, we ended up manufacturing a lot of gowns for the ladies in metallics.' Paolo's next challenge was dressing the men, especially since most were in tuxedos. 'There were tiny, subtle things like navy blue for the Australians, black for the Americans, and a mid gray for the staff.' She adds, 'It's all those visual tricks that we threw in there. Our creator, Paul (William Davies), didn't want anything flashy. He wanted Cordelia to stand out. And I think we got that. I think we achieved that with her look, and everyone else floated away.' Banchero shares the pressure of being the top pick in the NBA Draft: "I've got to come in and be that guy from day one"
Current Orlando Magic franchise player Paolo Banchero admitted that he never saw himself playing for his team before he was drafted first overall in 2022. In fact, the one-time All-Star didn't even think he'd be selected number one because it wasn't implied to him prior to the draft, like for most. So when the Duke University product heard his name called first, Paolo felt a mix of relief, but also added pressure. "I think it was pressure because I didn't visit the Magic during my pre-draft process. I visited the second and third pick that were OKC and Houston, but I didn't visit the Magic, so I've never been to Orlando. I didn't step in their building and they still chose me. So I was like some of that pressure because they're choosing me because they really do believe that I can come and change things around. We didn't meet, I didn't work out, but they just believed in me that much," said Banchero. Banchero is living up to the pressure In fairness to the 22-year-old forward, he's given the Magic organization reasons to be confident about picking him first. Their young team — albeit being kicked out in the first round of the playoffs for two straight years — has looked like the best version of itself since they traded away Aaron Gordon in 2021. Since drafting Paolo three years ago, Orlando has made the playoffs twice. Advertisement But the 2022-2023 Rookie of the Year awardee is obviously far from satisfied with what he's achieved so far in Orlando. The pressure to turn the franchise around continues to increase, and in a league where a handful of superstars ring chase, the 6'10'' forward wants to deliver a title to the team that believed in him over his peers in the 2022 NBA Draft. "Once I realized I was going to Orlando, I was like, you know what? I've got to come in and be that guy from day one and just give them my 100% focus from the start because they're taking this chance on me, and I've got to prove them right," added Banchero. Related: Michael Jordan told Phil Jackson that Scottie Pippen was the second-best player on the 1992 Dream Team: "He was a legitimate star" Can Banchero break the trend? Speaking of winning a title for Orlando, no one has done that for them in franchise history despite having picked first in the draft four times since they joined the league in 1989. The reason for that is that the likes of Shaquille O'Neal, Dwight Howard, and Chris Webber went on to greener pastures to chase a title in different teams instead of staying in Orlando. That's why a lot of Magic fans fear that Paolo will follow the same trend that they've grown sick of at this point. Advertisement Fortunately for them, the Seattle native doesn't want to leave and feels the need to deliver a title for Orlando, at least for now. Banchero has shown encouraging growth and signs that he can be that guy for them since day one, but whether Paolo can be the franchise superstar leading his team to the promised land is a whole different story and challenge. Lizzie McGuire Movie's Italian heartthrob Paolo is unrecognisable 23 years on
It's been nearly 25 years since our pre-teen hearts were sent racing being introduced to Italian superstar Paolo in The Lizzie McGuire Movie. In 2001 the teen comedy series starring Hilary Duff premiered on the Disney Channel. It followed schoolgirl Lizzie as she navigated the personal and social issues of her teenage years, accompanied by an animated version of herself that also expressed her inner thoughts and emotions. The series also starred Lalaine, Adam Lamberg, Jake Thomas, Hallie Todd, and Robert Carradine. It was a huge hit and was nominated for two Emmy Awards, also inspiring the 2003 film which followed Lizzie and her classmates as they travelled to Rome for a graduation trip. But after getting mistaken for an Italian pop star called Isabella, Lizzie embarked on an adventure (complete with a concert in the Colosseum), led by pop star Paolo. Despite his scheming ways eventually being revealed, the character and his Italian charm did capture the attention of teen girls. Paolo was actually played by actor Yani Gellman, who was born in Miami, Florida and lived in Australia, Spain and Texas before his family settled in Toronto, Canada. Yano, who has a degree in political science, made his acting debut in a 1998 episode of the TV series, Animorphs. He then went on to appear in the films Urban Legends: Final Cut and Jason X, playing characters who both eventually became victims of serial killers. But it was The Lizzie McGuire Movie that saw him become the crush of teen girls around the world. After that movie Yani played Rafe Torres in The Young and the Restless from 2008 until 2012, Garrett Reynolds in Pretty Little Liars, and Diego in 90210. His most notable roles in recent years have been on The Saint, Dynasty and Bosch. Yani, who has more than 20,000 Instagram followers, regularly shares updates with his fans. In recent months the 39-year-old, who is now rocking some stubble, has posted photos kayaking, playing ice hockey, and last month joked about Canada rejecting US President Donald Trump's assertion he wanted the country to become the '51st state'. In 2023, to mark the 20th anniversary of The Lizzie McGuire Movie, he wrote: 'This film has meant more to me than words can say… here's to the best community of fans and supporters anywhere – thank you for an amazing run. This truly is what dreams are made of.' In 2018 Yani told Too Fab he would jump at the chance to play Paolo again in a reboot to give him a 'chance at redemption'. 'I think that there's potentially even a bit of a story there about like what happens to these characters after this trip,' he said. More Trending 'I've always felt that Paolo had a heart bigger than what he kind of showed in those moments. 'The character would love a chance at redemption. So you know I would definitely be open to considering that if it came around.' Although a revival of the series was announced in 2019 and began production, it was officially cancelled the following year. Got a story?
