DR Estimated read time: 2' The Fado Festival, a traveling celebration of Portuguese culture through its most iconic musical genre, is set to return to Rabat on September 18 and 19 for its eighth Moroccan edition. Held annually across 18 major cities in Europe, Africa, Latin America, and Asia, this cultural tour marks its 15th global edition this year. In Rabat, the festival will pay tribute to Carlos Paredes (1925–2004), a towering figure in the world of the Portuguese guitar, renowned for his virtuosity and for elevating the instrument to a solo art form. The Mohammed V National Theatre will host two evenings of concerts, talks, and a film screening, offering audiences an in-depth look at the extraordinary legacy of this legendary musician. On Thursday, September 18, the program opens at 6:30 PM with a conference titled The Importance of Paredes in the Development of Modern Portuguese Guitar, led by acclaimed guitarist and educator Paulo Soares. Guerreiro, considered one of the foremost interpreters of the Portuguese guitar today, will join Soares in revisiting some of Paredes' most iconic compositions, celebrating the timeless influence of his work. On Friday, September 19, the festival continues with a 6:30 PM screening of Movimentos Perpétuos by Edgar Pêra, a documentary tribute to Carlos Paredes featuring archival footage and testimonies from fellow musicians reflecting on his deep imprint on Portuguese music. Spain captain sends ominous warning to Lionesses ahead of Euro 2025 final

Spain beat England in that 2023 World Cup final, while the two teams exchanged victories in the Nations League earlier this year, but they now meet in the Basel showdown Spain captain Irene Paredes isn't feeling the pressure ahead of Sunday's Euro 2025 final against England. Instead, the centre-back sees the game as an opportunity for her and her team-mates to write a new chapter by following their 2023 World Cup win with another major title. ‌ "We have a team that [has] played important games and tournaments,' Paredes said. 'We know how to manage that and those emotions that sometimes arise. ‌ 'We are a team who don't see this game as a pressure but as an opportunity to continue writing history, do something big and to show ourselves and let people enjoy.' ‌ Spain beat England in that 2023 World Cup final, while the two teams exchanged victories in the Nations League earlier this year. Montse Tome has been in the dugout for those last two matches, and Spain's manager shares skipper Paredes' feelings about the opportunity this team has in Basel. "I don't think about pressure,' Tome said. 'I think during the whole tournament we have been writing history - getting to the semis and the final for the first time [at the Euros], beating Germany for the first time. 'We have been accomplishing objectives and that's the reason we're here. Our first objective was to play six games and that's the case. ‌ 'England are defending the title, they are the current champions, we will compete and we will enjoy the game. Of course we want to win." England have made use of their full squad during their run to the final, with super-subs Chloe Kelly and Michelle Agyemang digging them out of trouble on more than one occasion. Spain have strength in depth as well, though, with the likes of Salma Paralluelo and Athenea del Castillo ready to make a difference when called upon - including in the semi-final against Germany, when Del Castillo got the assist for Aitana Bonmati's extra-time winner. ‌ "It's a final. We know it's a complicated game against a big national team and the current champion,' Tome added. 'We played twice against them this year, we know it will be hard. 'For the team, I have 23 players. If we feel we have to change something we can use all 23 players. This is something we have been doing since the beginning. They are all ready. 'If we need them, they are available." ‌ England might have needed penalties in their quarter-final against Sweden and extra-time against Italy in the semis, but Paredes believes Sarina Wiegman 's team are in the final on merit. "England are one of the best national teams in the world. They deserve to be in the final,' she said. "We played against them several times. They made us suffer, we did the same so it will be a balanced game. All the respect for them." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Spain's pioneers 'knocking down walls' with run to Euro 2025 final

Experienced Barcelona defender Paredes was referring to the development of the women's game since Spain's triumph at the World Cup in 2023, when they defeated England 1-0 in the title decider. Her team now have the opportunity to add a first ever European crown to the World Cup, and in doing so allow Spain to hold the both the women's and men's continental titles at the same time. "Firm steps have been taken but I think we need to keep opening doors and normalising the situation," Paredes said in Basel, where Sunday's final will be played. "A lot of walls were knocked down with our victory" in 2023, she added. "Now more and more people look up to us, but we still have some way to go." Spain's victory over England in the World Cup final was quickly overshadowed by different headlines, after a forced kiss by the country's football federation chief Luis Rubiales on player Jenni Hermoso as the team prepared to lift the trophy. Rubiales was eventually fined 10,800 euros ($11,670) for sexual assault in February this year. Montse Tome replaced Jorge Vilda as coach in the aftermath of that tournament, and she believes her team -- led by reigning Ballon d'Or Aitana Bonmati -- would be deserving European Championship winners. "As a team we have been fighting and working so hard in so many areas and we have managed to get everyone to just focus on the football, which is what matters," she said. "All the questions now are focused on football and that shows you the changes we have achieved." Tome insisted that neither she nor her team were feeling the pressure despite the high stakes at St Jakob-Park, with Spain already having made history on their run to the final. It is their first ever appearance in the final of a women's senior European Championship, achieved after a narrow last-four victory against Germany -- a team they had never previously beaten. "I am not thinking about pressure, just about all the history we have made during the tournament," she said, insisting that getting to the final was Spain's main goal in Switzerland. "At the beginning our aim was to play six games and we are going to do that, but England are the current European champions and we will just try to compete with them and enjoy it." It will be the third meeting of the teams in 2025, with Spain and England managing one win apiece during the recent UEFA Nations League campaign.

Euro 2025 final key battles as England seek revenge for Spain's World Cup win

England and Spain will do battle in a second consecutive major final at the European Women's Championship on Sunday. Spain got the better of Sarina Wiegman's side in the World Cup decider two years ago but England will be bidding to retain the trophy they won in 2022. Here, the PA news agency looks at the key contests on the pitch that could decide the match. Alessia Russo v Irene Paredes Spain have not conceded a goal in the knockout stages and have hugely experienced captain Paredes at the centre of their defence. They are undoubtedly a tough nut to crack but Germany showed in the semi-finals that a direct approach can cause them issues. Russo's only goal at the tournament so far came in the big group-stage win over Wales but her workrate and ability to lead the line make her a key player for England whether or not she is on the scoresheet. Paredes will not have fond memories of Russo's pressing in Arsenal's recent Champions League victory against Barcelona. Keira Walsh v Aitana Bonmati The midfield battle is likely to be key to deciding the outcome, and Spain have big hitters in Alexia Putellas and Bonmati, who has won the Ballon d'Or Feminin the last two years. Walsh knows the pair's strengths extremely well having spent two and a half years as team-mates of both at Barcelona. The technical ability of Spain's midfield means it would be a surprise if they do not dominate possession and Walsh may well have to sacrifice her own ball-playing ambitions to a degree to try to be a disruptor and help prevent England's defence coming under too much threat. Leah Williamson v Esther Gonzalez A big concern for Wiegman and England fans will be how shaky the defence has looked at times. While England have managed to dig themselves out of their self-made holes so far, similar generosity against Spain could see them heavily punished. England captain Williamson has a key role to play in marshalling the backline and in trying to blunt the danger of Spain striker Esther Gonzalez. The Gotham FC forward is the tournament's top goalscorer with four, although she has not yet found the net in the knockout stages.
