Rossi on Parma tears, Manchester United anecdotes and surprising Sir Alex
Giuseppe Rossi reveals why he 'cried every night' in the Parma academy, was 'surprised' by Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, and was behind an anecdote in Roy Kean's autobiography. The striker had been one of the great hopes for Italian football and had flashes of brilliance, but too often his career was ruined by a succession of injury problems. Born in New Jersey to Italian-American parents, he came to the Parma youth academy at the age of 12 and was then snapped up by Manchester United. Rossi unprepared for life at Parma academy FLORENCE – MARCH 22: Giuseppe Rossi during Pepito Day at Stadio Artemio Franchi on March 22, 2025 in Florence. Pepito Day is special event dedicated to Giuseppe Rossi, affectionately nicknamed 'Pepito'. This day will mark the farewell to football of the Italian-American striker, famous for his career at clubs such as Fiorentina, Villarreal and Manchester United, as well as for his appearances for the Italian national team. (Photo by) 'I didn't want to go, but I also didn't want to let my father down, so he and I moved to Salsamaggiore and my mother and sister Tina remained in Clifton, New Jersey,' Rossi told La Gazzetta dello Sport. 'It was a struggle, I was shy, introverted, struggled to make friends, and my teachers thought I was only there for football, so didn't help me at all. I'd cry every night until my mother came to visit. Being on the pitch was the only refuge.' When he joined Manchester United at the age of 17, Rossi got to work with the legendary coach Sir Alex Ferguson. 'He was a surprise, because he was an austere person, but also affectionate and attentive, a paternal figure who knew how to treat young players like gems. He would protect and motivate them to help them grow as both people and players, with precise values and rules. 'In training, it was like another sport to what I was accustomed to, this brutal pace and intensity. There were no friends in training, lots of shoves, kicks, aggression. I quickly realised what I had to do to earn respect in that squad. I was physically behind the rest, so I had to make do with technique and intelligence.' epa06403992 Genoa's forward Giuseppe Rossi greets supporters before the Italian Serie A soccer match Genoa Cfc vs Benevento Calcio at Luigi Ferraris Stadium in Genoa, Italy, 23 December 2017. EPA-EFE/SIMONE ARVEDA Rossi reveals he was behind an anecdote in the Roy Keane autobiography, even though at the time he had not been named. 'Keane wrote that one time in training he had told off a young Italian player for not passing him the ball and this young lad replied with a strong glare, a challenge. If that kid had said something, he would've got a slap, but he was silent and his gaze spoke volumes. So he walked over to shake his hand. 'Well, that kid was me. And I don't remember it at all! Evidently I was in a trance and my determination to create a career was absolute.' Rossi recently celebrated his career with Pepito Day at Fiorentina with many of his former teammates.

Italian Journalist Reveals: ‘Leoni Is An Inter Milan Target – With These Three Departures'
Journalist Fabrizio Biasin says that Parma's Giovanni Leoni is a target for Inter Milan, but only with sales. Biasin writes in TuttoMercatoWeb that the Nerazzurri are considering the 19-year-old as a long-term replacement for Francesco Acerbi, Stefan de Vrij, and Matteo Darmian. For the last several weeks, Inter have been heavily linked with Parma defender Giovanni Leoni. Reportedly, the 19-year-old is the player the Nerazzurri see as ideal for the long-term future of their defense. Furthermore, the fact that Leoni had worked with coach Cristian Chivu last season has further bumped him up Inter's list of targets. However, the price tag for Leoni would be quite high. Reportedly, Parma are holding out for as much as €40 million to sell the teenage defender. Biasin Confirms 'Giovanni Leoni Is A Target' For Inter – 'But Only With Sales' BOLOGNA, ITALY – OCTOBER 06: Giovanni Leoni of Parma calcio looks on during the Serie A match between Bologna and Parma at Stadio Renato Dall'Ara on October 06, 2024 in Bologna, Italy. (Photo by) Italian journalist Fabrizio Biasin writes 'As far as Leoni? He's still a target for Inter.' 'But before making an offer to Parma, the Nerazzurri want to free up space in their squad,' he adds. 'Which primarily means bringing in the cash necessary to make a fair offer for him.' Biasin then explains that 'Marotta and Ausilio want to give Chivu an extra defender to develop, in anticipation of the likely double- or triple-exit in the summer of 2026 (Acerbi, de Vrij, Darmian).' 'But these are all matters that they'll only consider once the Lookman soap opera is over. That's the top priority right now.'

Serie A and Premier League Giants Courting Parma Talent
Parma have been able to keep hold of Giovanni Leoni so far, even though most of the top Italian sides have pursued him. The going is about to get rougher for the Ducali. A few English clubs have taken notice of the talent as well, Fabrizio Romano reports (via Calciomercato). Inter, Juventus, and Milan have all inquired at some point. The Nerazzurri did it with the most conviction. The Gialloblù repelled them by setting a €40M price tag. The powerhouses will try again but also need to sell some players in the same role first. Parma are bracing for offers from England, in particular from Liverpool, Newcastle United, and Tottenham. The bids could come closer to their request in this case. The Emilian club is poised for a massive profit, as they acquired him for €5M from Sampdoria last summer. The decision by the 18-year-old will be pivotal in determining his future. He'll ask to transfer only to a team that guarantees him a starting job. He aims to become a fixture for Italy as well. Our Take on Leoni While he's been brilliant last season, the sample size might be too small for other Serie A sides to make such a large splash, even though, if all goes well, he'll be a linchpin for 15 years. Plus, he can still be molded for any position or style of defense. It'd be best for him to spend another year where he is to further grow in a comfortable situation, but his valuation is already substantial enough to justify a sale. A smart outfit that's not in a hurry would acquire him now and send him back on loan.

Report – Inter Milan Cash In More From TV Rights Than Any Other Serie A Club
Serie A runners-up Inter Milan have reportedly emerged as the top earners from TV rights in Italy's top flight. According to Gazzetta dello Sport via FCInter1908, the Nerazzurri have outperformed other clubs in the division. Despite failing to defend their league title last season, Inter capitalized on a massive fan base to secure the highest share of television revenue. Indeed, they left all other Serie A giants in the dust. (Photo by) Napoli dethroned Inter in Serie A during Antonio Conte's first season at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. However, it didn't reflect on Partenopei's bank accounts. Indeed, Cristian Chivu's men have collected an eye-watering €81.6 million from TV rights. Interestingly, that's nearly €14 million more than reigning holders Napoli (€67.8 million), who sit second in the table. Record-time champions Juventus rank third with €67.7 million, narrowly ahead of AC Milan, who collected €67.3 million. Meanwhile, Roma complete the top five, having pocketed €61.2 million. On that basis, bright days are ahead of the Nerazzurri.

Report – Inter Milan Open To Selling France Star Amid Pursuit Of Parma Youngster
Inter Milan are reportedly ready to sell Benjamin Pavard in order to make room for Parma starlet Giovanni Leoni. According to Tuttosport via FCInterNews, the French star could fall victim to Inter's pursuit of the 18-year-old. On the contrary, the Serie A runners-up have put the former Bayern Munich defender up for sale. However, Pavard has made it clear he would only join a 'top' European club. Inter Milan to Sell Benjamin Pavard to Raise Funds for Giovanni Leoni MILAN, ITALY – APRIL 16: Benjamin Pavard of FC Internazionale applauds the fans as he warms up prior to the UEFA Champions League 2024/25 Quarter Final Second Leg match between FC Internazionale Milano and FC Bayern München at San Siro on April 16, 2025 in Milan, Italy. (Photo by) Pavard's exit would not only open space for Giovanni Leoni, but it would also bolster Inter's bank accounts. Indeed, the 29-year-old will only leave Giuseppe Meazza for a substantial offer, probably in the region of €20 million. However, that's only half of what Parma demand to let their sought-after youngster leave the club this summer. Tracked by Inter since the beginning of the summer, Leoni has also drawn interest from AC Milan and Juventus. Moreover, Liverpool and Manchester United may try to bring the Italian prodigy to the Premier League.
