State minister rebukes Rafizi over ‘entry ban' remark

Sarawak minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah says Rafizi Ramli's 'jab' at the state was unfortunate given the relationship between the federal and state governments. PETALING JAYA : A Sarawak minister has criticised Rafizi Ramli for implying that he may be denied entry into the state once again if he loses the PKR deputy presidency race and steps down from the Cabinet. State minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said Rafizi's remarks were uncalled for. 'We have a good relationship with both Pakatan Harapan and PKR at the federal level and are together in the unity government,' the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) leader told FMT. 'Why take a jab at us?' Karim, the information chief of GPS lynchpin Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu, insisted that the Sarawak government, which has autonomy over immigration, has always exercised its right to deny entry into the state responsibly. He said only individuals with malicious intent—particularly those who seek to sow division through racial and religious discord—would be barred from entering Sarawak. 'If Rafizi is no longer a minister and behaves himself when in Sarawak, of course we will not bar him,' said Karim. Between 2013 and 2018, the Sarawak government barred Rafizi and other PH leaders from entering the state. The ban was later reviewed after PH formed the federal government in 2018. At a PKR election campaign event last Saturday, Rafizi suggested that he might be banned from entering Sarawak if he loses his party post and stands down as minister. AdChoices ADVERTISING The economy minister previously said he would relinquish his ministerial post and the party's deputy presidency if he were to lose to his challenger, Nurul Izzah Anwar, at the PKR polls, scheduled to be held today. On Sunday, home minister and PKR colleague Saifuddin Nasution Ismail took issue with Rafizi remarks, pointing out that Sarawak was a key partner of the federal government.

Speaking to reporters after the Pre-State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Meeting and PBB Sarawak Supreme Council Meeting 2025 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) last night, the Asajaya assemblyman said the role was not entirely unfamiliar to him. 'In terms of responsibilities, I believe they are quite similar to what I undertook previously when I served as a vice-president. 'The role of publicity chief is almost parallel to that of a vice-president, as both positions hold the authority to issue statements. 'Now, serving as publicity chief, I believe this role will see me working more closely with the secretary-general and the party president to ensure that any statements issued are aligned with the party's direction and not perceived as too personal,' he said. Abdul Karim previously did not retain his position as vice-president during PBB's triennial delegates convention held in February. Nevertheless, he expressed his gratitude to the party President and Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for his appointment to the post. His appointment fills the vacancy previously held by Datuk Idris Buang. 'This reflects the trust that may still remain for me to continue contributing to the party's Supreme Council,' he added. Abdul Karim retains his ministerial portfolios as Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister, as well as Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister. PBB appoints 5 youth reps to Supreme Council following constitutional amendments

They newly appointed are Anderson Lah, Sufian Mohat, Martin Ngindang Richard Mullok, Afiq Fikri Brahim, and Lyokarto Sikong. Abang Johari stated that these appointments provide opportunities for younger generations in the party's top leadership and align with efforts to groom future leaders for political and socioeconomic challenges. 'In our party, we constantly guide the young as future successors for leadership roles. We must train our leaders, especially now that we are facing many new challenges in both political and socioeconomic aspects,' he said at a press conference after chairing the Pre-DUN Meeting and the 2025 PBB Supreme Council Meeting held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching last night. Additionally, Abang Johari revealed that the party had recently sent a political secretary to Singapore to observe the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in elections. 'In Singapore, they do use AI, but their regulations emphasise the issue of deepfakes which can be used for slander. So, we are studying what the future might hold due to this advanced technology,' he added. Regarding the composition of the new Supreme Council, he said the combination of veteran and young leaders is a key approach to ensuring the party's continuity and relevance. 'What we have is a combination of veteran and new faces… PBB leadership must include experienced individuals, as well as those who are digitally savvy and those who are not. 'We bring everyone together in this transition towards the future, because PBB must remain relevant at all times,' he said. This Supreme Council Meeting is the first held following the recent PBB Convention, where several members were elected while others were newly appointed. abang johari lead PBB supreme council youth

GPS components must stay vigilant ahead of state election, says PBB veep

Dr Annuar speaks during the Pre-Gawai Programme. SIBU (May 17): Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) vice-president Datuk Dr Annuar Rapa'ee has cautioned all Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) component parties against becoming complacent, despite the coalition's current position of strength. He stressed the importance of staying vigilant and proactive, especially with the next state election expected as early as next year. 'Some may not realise it, but based on the current term, the state election is due next year and that's not far off. Thus, we must be fully prepared and remain on guard. 'Never assume we are too strong to fail. As the saying goes, 'Still waters run deep', the greatest threats may come not from the outside, but from within. We cannot afford to let our guard down,' he said at the 2025 Pre-Gawai Programme for N.53 Bawang Assan here on Friday. Also present wasTourism, Arts and Culture Minister Dato Sri Tiong King Sing as the event's guest of honour. Other attendees included Bawang Assan assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh; Ba Kelalan assemblyman Baru Bian; Meluan assemblyman Roland Duat Jubin; Krian assemblyman Friday Belik; Senator Pele Peter Tinggom; political secretaries to the Sarawak Premier Joshua Ting and Brian Fong; PDP Bawang Assan chairman Councillor Wong Hua; and the programme's organising chairman Tuai Rumah Bujang Ujeh. Dr Annuar expressed hope that no opposition party would contest the Bawang Assan seat, saying that GPS must remain united and focused on retaining the constituency. 'There is no other formula for success than through strong cooperation. The spirit of unity among GPS component parties must not only be maintained, it must be strengthened,' he said. He also assured that PBB would give its full backing to any candidate fielded by GPS in Bawang Assan. 'PBB is fully committed to the GPS cause. We will support any candidate, as long as they are from one of our component parties. Once the leadership has made its decision, we will rally behind that candidate to ensure victory,' said the Nangka assemblyman. Adding on, he reiterated GPS' resolve to pursue the full return of Sarawak's rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), with particular focus on education autonomy. 'As State Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, I will work to ensure that the education autonomy promised under Paragraph 17 of the Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) Report is restored to Sarawak. 'This is not a struggle we can fight alone. The people must stand united behind us so we can reclaim what rightfully belongs to Sarawak,' he said. On the upcoming Gawai celebration, he said the festival holds a special place in his calendar, and should be celebrated by all Sarawakians regardless of background in the same spirit as Hari Raya and Chinese New Year. 'Our harmony and unity in Sarawak, built across more than 27 ethnic groups, is a source of pride and a model for the nation. Political stability is our foundation. 'With this unity and harmony as our strength, I am confident and I promise that PBB, PDP and the other GPS component parties will continue working to reclaim Sarawak's rights from Putrajaya in the near future,' he said. dr annuar rapaee gps PBB state election

Wan Junaidi extends condolences to former Serian MP's family

Wan Junaidi called Dominic a highly-respected leader who had rendered outstanding service to his people, the state of Sarawak, and Malaysia as a whole. KUCHING (May 16): Governor of Sarawak Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi have extended their heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies to the family of the late Datuk Amar Dominic Andrew Dago Randan. The former Serian MP passed away yesterday at the age of 90. In a statement, Wan Junaidi called Dominic a highly-respected leader within the Bidayuh community, who had rendered outstanding service to his people, the state of Sarawak, and Malaysia as a whole. He expressed sorrow over the loss and offered prayers for Dominic's widow Datin Amar Mary Margaret Lenuh and the entire family. Wan Junaidi wished them strength and resilience during this difficult time. 'He was not only a close acquaintance, but also a long-time comrade during our tenure in Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB). 'He was recognised as an active politician, a patriot, and a tireless advocate for the development of the Bidayuh community, particularly noted for his involvement in the formation of Malaysia in 1963,' Wan Junaidi said. He called Dominic's passing a significant loss to Sarawak, his family, the Bidayuh community, and the state at large, adding that the profound impact of Dominic's contributions will not be forgotten. 'Losing a beloved family member is never easy. We hope the grief felt by the family of the late Dominic will ease with time,' he added. Dominic was the first Bidayuh elected to the Dewan Rakyat. Born on Aug 4, 1934, he was a member of the Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) and played a direct role in negotiating the terms of Sarawak and Sabah's forming the Federation of Malaysia, alongside representatives from Malaya and Singapore. From March 15, 1971 until December 1973, he served as chairman of the Sarawak State Public Service Commission. In recognition of his service, Dominic was conferred the title 'Datuk Amar' and received the Sarawak Independence Commemorative Award during the state's 50th anniversary of independence within Malaysia.
