Nurul Izzah's 13-seat demand disregards local autonomy - STAR Sabah

Anuar KOTA KINABALU (May 26): Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR Sabah) has expressed strong objections to recent remarks made by PKR Deputy President Nurul Izzah Anwar, who announced her party's intention to contest at least 13 seats in the upcoming 17th Sabah State Election (PRN17). STAR Sabah views this move as a direct challenge to the political autonomy of Sabah said its information chief, Anuar Ghani. He said the demand for 13 seats by a Peninsular-based party implies a continued perception of Sabah as a political colony, rather than an equal partner in the Malaysian Federation. This undermines the spirit of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), which affirms Sabah's right to determine its own political direction. According to Anuar, Sabah is not a testing ground for outside political machinery. The party further criticizes Nurul Izzah's statement regarding the deployment of campaign teams from Selangor, Johor and Penang to Sabah, calling it intrusive and disrespectful to local sentiments. 'Sabah is not a political laboratory for Peninsular parties,' said Anuar. 'Sending in outside machinery shows a lack of sensitivity and reinforces the perception that national parties continue to undermine local leadership.' STAR Sabah also questioned the basis for PKR's seats claim, noting that the party previously won only two out of the 10 seats it contested in the last Sabah State election. 'To now demand 13 seats despite such a record reflects not only overreach but a lack of understanding of Sabah's evolving political landscape,' Anuar added. Some Sabahans say, 'Big ambition, Tamaha juga!' The party stressed that PRN17 is a state election, not a general election, and that priority must be given to Sabah-based parties who have long worked at the grassroots level, understood local issues, and maintained consistent engagement with the people. STAR Sabah reaffirms the principle of Borneonisation – enshrined in the 1962 Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) Report and the MA63 – as a guiding doctrine for Sabah's governance. 'The right to self-govern, especially in public administration, must logically extend to the political realm. Sabahans have the right to reject external political dominance and chart their own course' said Anuar. STAR Sabah challenged PKR to name the specific 13 seats they intend to contest. 'Are they targeting seats currently held by local parties? Sabahans deserve transparency. We must know whether these demands will come at the expense of local political strength' Anuar concluded. STAR Sabah urges all Sabahans to stand united and support local parties that are committed to protecting Sabah's rights, identity, and future within the Federation of Malaysia. The division and disunity at PKR national level politics is viewed with grave concern by the people of Sabah.

Star man: Parties should contest on own strength

Published on: Saturday, May 17, 2025 Published on: Sat, May 17, 2025 Text Size: Jordan said true democratic stability is achieved following elections, not before them. Kota Kinabalu: Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (StarSabah) Wiramuda Exco Chief Jordan Jude Ellron called for local political parties to contest on their own strength in the upcoming State election rather than forming pre-election coalitions. 'The people should be given full power to choose who is worthy to represent them,' Jordan said in a recent Facebook post. Advertisement 'Political cooperation should be formed after the election, not before,' he said. Jordan said political alliances should be based on the trust and mandate of the people, rather than what he described as 'secret agreements or short-term political interests.' BN wrong about ‘Sabah for Sabahans' slogan: Jeffrey

Published on: Wednesday, May 14, 2025 Published on: Wed, May 14, 2025 Text Size: Jeffrey (left) said Zahid's (right) statement ignores history, distorts the facts and dismisses the legitimate political will of Sabahans. Kota Kinabalu: Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star) President Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey G Kitingan defended the 'Sabah for Sabahans' sentiment after Barisan Nasional Chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi dismissed it as divisive. 'Let me be clear. 'Sabah for Sabahans' is here to stay. It is not a temporary political slogan. It is a long overdue restoration of truth. If anything is divisive, it is the persistent Federal arrogance that refuses to recognise Sabah's rightful place,' said the Deputy Chief Minister in a statement, Tuesday. Jeffrey who is Gabungan Rakyat Sabah Vice Chairman said this in reaction to the Deputy Prime Minister who labelled the slogan as divisive and counterproductive. 'Our cooperation with Putrajaya must be based on respect and equality, not subservience. We will work together when it benefits Sabah, but we will no longer tolerate interference, manipulation and exploitation,' said Jeffrey. 'Sabah is not a colony of Malaya. We never were and we never will be. Whether we move forward as a restored partner within the federation, or chart an entirely new course, will depend on how Sabah is treated in the days to come. 'That decision will be made not in Putrajaya but right here, by the people of Sabah,' he said. Jeffrey said Zahid's statement ignores history, distorts the facts and dismisses the legitimate political will of Sabahans. 'We do not need permission to speak for ourselves, nor do we require validation from any federal figure to assert what is rightfully ours. ''Sabah for Sabahans' is not an act of defiance. It is a rightful stand for political dignity, constitutional integrity and historical truth. Sabah was never meant to be a subordinate state. 'We formed the Malaysian federation as an equal partner, alongside Sarawak and Malaya, based on clear terms set out in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and the Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) Report. 'Let me speak frankly. For decades, Sabah has been treated as a resource colony while our voices were suppressed. The federal government has systematically dismantled the spirit of MA63, eroded our constitutional position and reaped wealth from our soil while ignoring our development needs,' he said. 'Since 1976, our oil and gas were placed under the control of Petronas with barely a say from Sabahans, our status as a Negara and equal partner was erased from both federal and state constitutions, Project IC imported illegals, re-engineered our demography and permanently changed our political future. 'Additionally, the Sabah Constitution was tampered with to accommodate the entry of Malayan parties, who rotated Chief Ministership like tokens until Umno's turn arrived, our forests and lands were alienated to entities far from Sabah, enriching others at our expense. 'Federal revenue policies continue to deprive Sabah of its rightful share, while our infrastructure remains decades behind and the promise of Borneonisation remains a broken one as West Malaysians dominate Federal posts in Sabah to this day. 'And now, after all these, we are told not to express our own aspirations? To sit quietly while Malayan parties negotiate among themselves over who gets to rule Sabah? 'We will not apologise for wanting control over our own future. 'Sabah has the right to decide its own direction. If Malaysia is to mean anything at all, it must be built on genuine partnership, not domination,' he said. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? ‘Sabah for Sabahans' here to stay, says Jeffrey

Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan – Photo by Chimon Upon KOTA KINABALU (May 13): Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) president Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey G Kitingan has taken Deputy Prime Minister and Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to task for labelling the 'Sabah for Sabahans' sentiment as divisive and counterproductive. To the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah vice chairman, what is truly divisive is federal arrogance, not 'Sabah for Sabahans'. 'I refer to the recent remarks by Deputy Prime Minister and Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi labelling the 'Sabah for Sabahans' sentiment as divisive and counterproductive. Such a statement ignores history, distorts the facts, and dismisses the legitimate political will of Sabahans. We do not need permission to speak for ourselves, nor do we require validation from any federal figure to assert what is rightfully ours,' said Jeffrey in a statement on Monday night. The Deputy Chief Minister pointed out that 'Sabah for Sabahans' is not an act of defiance; it is a rightful stand for political dignity, constitutional integrity, and historical truth. Sabah, Dr Jeffrey stressed, was never meant to be a subordinate state. 'And now, after all these, we are told not to express our own aspirations? To sit quietly while Malayan parties negotiate among themselves over who gets to rule Sabah? We will not apologise for wanting control over our own future,' the senior Sabahan politician stressed. According to him, Sabah has the right to decide its own direction, and if Malaysia is to mean anything at all, it must be built on genuine partnership, not domination. 'Let me be clear. 'Sabah for Sabahans' is here to stay. It is not a temporary political slogan. It is the long-overdue restoration of truth. Sabah STAR stays committed to GRS ahead of State election

Robert Tawik KOTA KINABALU (May 3): Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Sabah STAR) has confirmed its full support for the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition and will contest the upcoming 17th Sabah state election under the alliance. Deputy president Datuk Robert Tawik dismissed speculation that Sabah STAR and Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) might leave GRS to go solo after the launch of PBStar. He said GRS was built on the people's desire for unity among local parties to ensure political stability in Sabah. 'GRS represents maturity and unity. It was formed in the best interest of our state,' Robert said in a statement on Saturday. He praised the leadership of Sabah STAR president Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, saying their partnership has brought respect and stability to the coalition. Robert also noted their efforts in reclaiming Sabah's rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), calling it a major achievement. With six state assembly seats, Sabah STAR is confident of continued grassroots support and is committed to helping GRS win. 'We will work hard to maintain the people's trust. Only a stable government can deliver more development, jobs and support to all Sabahans,' he said, urging the public to stand firm with GRS.
