Binghamton sentenced to 11.5 years for weapons charges
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A Binghamton man will spend nearly 12 years in New York State Prison for weapons charges. Broome County District Attorney Paul Battisti announced that Dorian Raysor, 33, was sentenced to 11 ½ years in prison to be followed by 5 years of post-release supervision for Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree, and Tampering with Physical Evidence. The sentence is the result of an investigation conducted by the Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force. On the day of the incident, Task Force members were conducting surveillance in a hotspotarea of Binghamton when they observed Raysor adjusting an object in the front of his waistband. Upon making contact with him, Raysor fled the scene on foot. During the pursuit, he discarded a handgun and a holster. Officers later recovered a loaded FN .45 caliber handgun. 'This conviction is the result of strong, coordinated police work and a commitment to keeping illegally possessed firearms off our streets. Mr. Raysor's actions posed a serious threat to public safety, and this sentence reflects our office's dedication to holding violent offenders accountable. I thank the jury for their service and the SIU Task Force for their tireless work,' said Battisti. Broome County receives $750k to support domestic violence survivors
BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Broome County was recently awarded a grant to combat domestic violence and support survivors. Broome County District Attorney Paul Battisti announced on Wednesday that the county was awarded $757,767 in New York State funding. The money will support local law enforcement and non-profit organizations in their effort to reduce intimate partner violence, educate the community, hold abusers accountable, and save victims' lives. The funding was secured through the New York State Governor's 2025 budget and administered by the Department of Criminal Justice Services. This grant enables Broome County agencies and community partners to collaborate using the latest evidence-based practices when responding to domestic violence incidents that exhibit a heightened risk of serious harm or lethality. Binghamton man sentenced to six years in prison for possession of a firearm
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A Binghamton man appeared in Broome County Court for sentencing last week. District Attorney Paul Battisti announced that 23-year-old Dekwaun Hicks was sentenced to six years in New York State prison, followed by three years of post-release supervision for Attempted Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree. On June 26, 2024, members of the Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force and the Binghamton Police Department's Community Response Team conducted a vehicle stop in the area of Varick Street in the City of Binghamton after receiving information that Hicks was in possession of a firearm. Officers recovered a loaded Taurus 9mm handgun and additional ammunition as well as methamphetamine pills from the vehicle. According to the District Attorney, Hicks was originally expected to receive a three-year sentence, followed by two-years post release supervision. However, prior to sentencing and while out on bail, he was arrested and charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree, resulting in the enhanced sentence. 'This case sends a clear message: those who endanger our community by illegally possessing firearms will face serious consequences,' said Battisti. 'Public safety demands accountability, and our office will continue to act decisively against illegal gun possession and drug-related offenses.' BCSO announces DWI enforcement results for first quarter
BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The Broome County Sheriff's Office is cracking down on impaired driving as part of its STOP-DWI Program. Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar announced the results of the first quarter of targeted DWI response conducted by BCSO Road Patrol in 2025. The Sheriff's Office implemented the STOP-DWI Program in January. The initiative is a partnership with the Broome County District Attorney's Office to fund an additional patrol deputy specifically to target drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs. From January 1 to April 1, the DWI Enforcement Deputy charged 24 people with DWI misdemeanors. In addition, deputies conducted 275 vehicle stops, made 44 arrests, and issued 287 tickets. 'Individuals who operate motor vehicles while intoxicated and or impaired jeopardize the health, safety and welfare of motorists and pedestrians in our community. As a result, our office is committed to aggressively assist with detection, enforcement, and prosecution of these operators. By financially supporting a full-time Broome County Sheriff's Deputy to patrol countywide to maintain the safety and security of our community has proven to be successful. We will continue to collaborate with local law enforcement agencies to achieve our goal maintain the safety and security of all roadways.' said District Attorney, Paul Battisti. Endicott man to be sentenced to prison for possession charges
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – An Endicott man is expected to spend the next ten years in New York State prison. Broome County District Attorney Paul Battisti announced that on March 13, Phillip Alvarez III of Endicott appeared in court and pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree. The charges stem from a July 2, 2024, search warrant execution by the Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force at a residence located at 341 Main Street in the Village of Endicott. During the search, investigators seized money, ammunition, a loaded RG-IND .22 caliber revolver that was found on Alvarez's person, 148.83 grams of cocaine, a loaded Taurus 9mm handgun, and digital scales. As part of his guilty plea, Alvarez also forfeited $5,566 in drug proceeds. As part of a plea agreement, Alvarez will be sentenced to ten years in state prison followed by five years of post-release supervision for the drug charge. He will also receive a seven-year prison sentence followed by five years of post-release supervision for the weapons charge. The sentences will run concurrently. 'Illegal firearms and dangerous narcotics have no place in our community. The successfulprosecution of this case is a direct result of the hard work by the law enforcement agenciesand prosecutors involved in his case. Our office remains committed to ensuring that thosewho threaten public safety are held accountable,' said Battisti.
