Paulo Fonseca's touchline ban to be upheld

A press release from Olympique Lyonnais suggests that Paulo Fonseca's nine-month touchline ban will be upheld by the authorities, despite an appeal. Fonseca was handed a nine-month ban for confronting referee Benoît Millot in the dying moments of Olympique Lyonnais' 2-1 victory over Stade Brestois in March. The suspension handed down by the LFP means that the Lyon manager is banned from the touchline until November 30. The Portuguese manager is even banned from entering the dressing room before, during and after the game, until September 15th. Advertisement Lyon were critical of the LFP's ban for Fonseca, appointed at the end of January and stated that they would appeal. OL had been set to make their appeal through the LFP. However, it was instead made through the Comité National Olympique du Sport Français (CNOSF) in order to find a mediation. However, during the appeal, which took place towards the end of the Ligue 1 campaign, Fonseca was not given the chance to defend himself, something he is frustrated about. As a result, he was not confident that the ban would be overturned. OL have now denounced the procedure, stating that the authorities 'refused to engage in discussion'. The communiqué, therefore, suggests that they have been made aware of the failure of the appeal. Fonseca, therefore, will start next season once again far from the touchline and from the dressing room. GFFN | Luke Entwistle

Sergio Conceicao leaves AC Milan after just 6 months, Allegri tipped to return to club

AC Milan have parted ways with manager Sergio Conceicao after just six months in charge. Advertisement The Portuguese coach took over from Paulo Fonseca in December and lifted the Italian Super Cup in just his second game with the club, beating rivals Inter in Saudi Arabia. But the chance of more silverware disappeared with defeat to Bologna in the Coppa Italia final and an eighth-place finish in Serie A left them without European football next season. A brief statement read: 'AC Milan and Sergio Conceicao will not continue their journey together next season. 'The club would like to thank Sergio and his staff for their commitment, professionalism and dedication shown during their time leading the first team over the past few months. The AC Milan family parts with the coach who won the 50th trophy in the club's history, wishing him the best for the future.' Advertisement Reports in Italy suggest Massimiliano Allegri could be in line to return to the San Siro, having previously led the Rossoneri between 2010 and 2014.

Milan part ways with Conceicao after disappointing season

May 29 (Reuters) - AC Milan have sacked coach Sergio Conceicao, the Serie A side announced on Thursday, following a disappointing season in which they finished ninth in the league and missed out on European competition for the first time since 2019. "The Club would like to thank Sergio and his staff for their commitment, professionalism and dedication shown during their time leading the team over the past few months," Milan said in a statement. Conceicao was appointed in December as a replacement for Paulo Fonseca and got off to an impressive start as he led Milan to victory in the Italian Super Cup in his second match in charge. However, results in the league did not improve under the Portuguese and they were also eliminated from the Champions League in a playoff loss to Dutch side Feyenoord in February. Milan's last hope of salvaging the season ended earlier in May with a bitter 1–0 loss to Bologna in the Coppa Italia final. Conceicao was not on the touchline for the season's final match against Monza at San Siro, having received a one-match ban after being sent off in the defeat by AS Roma last weekend — a result that ended Milan's last hope of securing a European spot.

Milan sack Sergio Conceicao after just five months in charge

Milan have sacked head coach Sergio Conceicao, just five months after he was appointed. The 50-year-old was appointed in December to replace Paulo Fonseca, who himself had only six months in charge of the team. Milan lost the Coppa Italia final to Bologna earlier this month and despite winning the Supercoppa Italiana earlier in the campaign, finished a disappointing seventh-place in Serie A and missed out on European qualification for 2025-26. We would like to thank Sérgio Conceição and his staff for their commitment, professionalism and dedication shown during their time leading the First Team over the past few months. — AC Milan (@acmilan) May 29, 2025 Meanwhile, Milan have been linked with former striker Igli Tare as the club's new sporting director — a role the Albanian previously held at Lazio. Former Porto head coach Conceicao had a bright start to life in Milan, guiding his side to a 3-2 victory over rivals Inter in the Supercoppa in January however, the following month, they were eliminated from the Champions League at the play-off stage by Feyenoord. Advertisement Milan parted ways with Scudetto-winning head coach Stefano Piolo in the summer of 2024 and then sacked Fonseca in December of that year. Milan last won the Serie A title in 2021-22, their first Scudetto in 11 seasons, prior to RedBird's takeover later in 2022 with this year's Supercoppa their only trophy in three seasons. Milan ultras staged a remarkable protest against the club's ownership ahead of their final Serie A match of the season against Monza. Protests were held ahead of the game outside the club's Casa Milan headquarters, where around 5,000 ultras gathered before marching to the club's San Siro stadium. There were nostalgic chants for the club's iconic former captain Paolo Maldini, who made a record 902 appearances for Milan and who was sacked from his directorial role by the current ownership, and for the late Italian prime minister and media tycoon Silvio Berlusconi, the club's most successful owner. Milan ultras lined-up ahead of Saturday's match to spell out the message 'Go Home' in the Curva Sud, with chants demanding RedBird Capital's Gerry Cardinale sell his stake in the club and leave. Former Arsenal star's house burgled while he was playing in his final game before retirement

Former Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette 's house was allegedly burgled while he was playing during his final game before retiring. The player in question was appearing in his 391st and final game for his current club before he hangs up his boots at the end of the current season. However, his final appearance was said to have been overshadowed by the purported incident, which was claimed to have occurred on Saturday night. French publication Le Progres reported that his home was broken into by two burglars, who were said to have accessed a safe. The Items alleged to have been stolen include jewellery, luxury leather goods and cash, in a robbery claimed to be valued at tens of thousands of pounds. The burglary was reported at 1.30am on Sunday morning, after two individuals were seen in security footage, leading to local police launching an investigation. Alexandre Lacazette, who spent five years with the Gunners, was appearing for Lyon in their match against Angers in Ligue 1. It comes after Lyon coach Paulo Fonseca confirmed earlier this week that Lacazette would be departing the club Lyon when his contract runs out this summer. The Lyon club legend was honoured by fans with an enormous tifo ahead of last night's game. Lacazette ensured it was a swansong to savour on a personal note as he netted both goals in his side's 2-0 win over Angers. The goals took Lacazette past 200 goals for Lyon, having come through the club's academy as a youngster. The alleged burglary is not the first to happen to Lyon players in recent years, with Georges Mikautadze being robbed at gunpoint last December. Meanwhile, former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren was the victim of an attempted robbery in October 2023.
