5 taken to hospital after fire breaks out at Whampoa Heights; more than 40 people evacuated, Singapore News
A fire broke out at 20 Jalan Tenteram just before noon on Thursday (May 29), the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said. A total of five people were sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Two people were sent to Singapore General Hospital, another two were conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, and one person was sent to KK Women's and Children's Hospital. In a Facebook post, the SCDF said it responded to the fire at about 11.40am and that the blaze involved items placed along the corridor outside a unit on the second and third floor. The fire affected the inside of both these units, while a few neighboring units sustained heat and soot damage, according to the the Facebook post. The SCDF added that the fire was extinguished with two water jets and about 40 people from the affected block were evacuated by the police and SCDF as a precautionary measure. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Firefighters and police were also spotted at the scene. This is the second time a fire has broken out in the Whampoa Heights neighbourhood. Ten people, including three children, were injured in a fire at 22 Jalan Tenteram in February 2021.

Czech president ends probe of soldiers over Afghanistan torture claim
The Czech Republic has dropped criminal investigations against four soldiers in connection with serious allegations of torture of an Afghan man during a mission in Afghanistan in a move ordered by President Petr Pavel. By closing the investigations, Pavel - himself a former NATO general - was making use of a constitutional provision, the presidential office said in Prague on Wednesday. The president had acted in response to the defendants' pleas for clemency, it added in a statement. The Czech Republic was involved in the NATO mission in Afghanistan from 2002 to 2021. The allegations date back to 2018, when an Afghan man shot and killed a Czech soldier at a military base and seriously injured two others. After his arrest, he was interrogated by four members of a Czech special unit and by US soldiers, according to the CTK news agency. Shortly afterwards, he was taken to a field hospital, where he died. The Czech public prosecutor's office filed charges against the four military personnel in April. It accused two of them of coercion and insubordination and two others of failure to render assistance and neglect of their duties as soldiers. A spokesman for the president justified the decision, citing among other things the "exceptional nature of the war situation," the "difficult international context" and the length of the investigation.

Zelensky says does 'not believe' Russian truce pledge
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Sunday that he did "not believe" Russia would adhere to a three-day truce to coincide with Moscow's Victory Day celebrations on May 9. Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a three-day truce during commemorations for the anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe, saying it would test Kyiv's readiness for a long-term ceasefire. "This is not the first challenge, nor are these the first promises made by Russia to cease fire," Zelensky said at a news conference with Czech President Petr Pavel. "We understand who we are dealing with, we do not believe them," said Zelensky, who arrived in Prague Sunday for a two-day visit accompanied by his wife. "Today and all these days they are talking about wanting some kind of partial ceasefire, but you should know, for example, that the number of assaults today is the highest in recent months," Zelensky said. Citing a military report, he said that Russia had carried out more than 200 attacks on Saturday. "So there is no faith (in them)," Zelensky said. In a statement issued later Sunday, Zelensky summarised his meeting with Pavel. Discussions were underway for a Ukrainian-Czech pilot training school for American F-16 jets, which could not be established in Ukraine "due to current security concerns", he added. Zelensky also said there would be a meeting Monday with "Czech defence companies", with details to be announced later. Pavel, a former NATO general, said that "Putin can end the war with a single decision, but he has not shown any willingness so far". The Czech Republic, a member of the European Union and NATO, has provided Ukraine with substantial humanitarian and military support since Russia's invasion began in February 2022. It has received more than half a million war refugees and supplied the Ukrainian army with equipment including tanks, armoured vehicles and helicopters.
