Truck with banned chewable tobacco intercepted, goods worth Rs 83L seized
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The crime branch of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city police intercepted a truck carrying banned chewable tobacco worth Rs 63 lakh near Karodi toll plaza in the early hours of Tuesday. The truck, allegedly originating from Madhya Pradesh, was suspected to be headed to Mumbai, sparking swift action under the Daulatabad police station's jurisdiction. Commissioner of police Pravin Pawar said directives were issued to thoroughly investigate the entire racket involved in the manufacturing and supply chain of banned gutka products. "Prima facie, it appears the accused were carrying separate sacks of paan masala and tobacco to avoid detection, mixing them to create gutka," Pawar said. Acting on a tip-off, a crime branch team led by sub-inspector Navnath Patvadkar intercepted a truck with a Dadra and Nagar Haveli registration near Karodi toll plaza. During the inspection, accompanied by food and drugs department officials, they seized 150 sacks of banned tobacco products, including paan masala worth Rs 56.25 lakh and flavoured tobacco worth Rs 6.75 lakh. The truck, valued at Rs 20 lakh, was also confiscated, bringing the total seizure to Rs 83 lakh. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Speed up your Mac and free up storage with Space Lens MacPaw Read More Undo The truck driver, identified as Banesingh Babulal Kataria (37) of Badgaon in Madhya Pradesh, was taken into custody. Preliminary investigations suggest that the consignment was manufactured in Madhya Pradesh and was en route to Mumbai for delivery. Following the seizure, an offence was registered at Daulatabad police station under relevant sections of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and BNS. Senior officers said investigation was under way to trace the source and end destination of the consignment, and efforts were on to bust the larger supply network operating across state borders.

‘Birthday boy' Fadnavis basks in praise from rivals Uddhav, Pawar; says ‘we are not enemies'
Asked about the remarks made by Thackeray and Pawar, his political opponents and former CMs, in the book about his zeal and passion towards work, Fadnavis, who belongs to their rival party BJP, said he was thankful to them for their effusive praise. Governor C P Radhakrishnan released the coffee table book titled 'Maharashtra Nayak' on Fadnavis at Raj Bhavan to mark the CM's 55th birthday. Mumbai, Jul 22 (PTI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday thanked NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar and Shiv Sena (UBT) head Uddhav Thackeray for effusively praising him in a coffee table book released on his birthday, saying they were his ideological opponents, not enemies. 'We are ideological opponents and not enemies,' the CM insisted while speaking to reporters in Nagpur, his hometown. 'Sharad Pawar is a large-hearted and senior leader. His comments are priceless for me,' he said. In the book, Pawar (84) has written that when he sees Fadnavis, it reminds him of the time when he himself became Maharashtra's Chief Minister for the first time in 1978. Pawar was just 38 when he became CM, making him the youngest politician to occupy the top post in the state. The Rajya Sabha member noted that Fadnavis was knowledgeable and has a strong grip on the state administration. In a lighter vein, the former Union minister likened his own body structure to Fadnavis, saying the 'similarity of being on the heavier side was never a deterrent to work hard. How doesn't he get tired, I wonder.' Thackeray, in his piece in the book, has described Fadnavis as a studious and loyal politician, who has succeeded in strengthening his party in Maharashtra, which was once a Congress stronghold. The Shiv Sena (UBT) leader, a former CM, has written that Fadnavis has a chance of getting a bigger role at the national level and wished him well for the future. Fadnavis, a three-time chief minister, assumed the top office for the first time in 2014 at the age of 44, making him the second-youngest CM in Maharashtra's history after Pawar. He is also the BJP's first chief minister of Maharashtra and his rise to the top position reflects the saffron outfit's growing support base in a state where the Congress once ruled the roost. IIT Kharagpur student chokes on medicine, dies
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Kolkata, Jul 22 (PTI) A second-year B Tech student of IIT Kharagpur died after choking on medicines, an official said on Tuesday. The institute spokesperson told PTI that Chandradeep Pawar from Madhya Pradesh gulped some medicines prescribed by his doctor after dinner on Monday night but complained of difficulty in breathing soon after. He was taken to the institute hospital inside the campus at around 11 pm and succumbed to death shortly afterwards. While the spokesperson said prima facie it appeared the pill choked inside his airway, the post-mortem details will confirm the exact reason behind the death. The spokesperson said by all accounts, the tragic death of Pawar appears to be accidental, but the institute stands committed to prevent recurrence of such incidents in every possible way. Pawar was a boarder in Nehru Hall of the campus. Pawar, who hailed from Madhya Pradesh, was a second-year student of electrical engineering. The institute has ordered an internal inquiry into his death. Last Friday, the body of Ritam Mondal, a fourth-year student of Mechanical Engineering, was found hanging in his hostel room. On January 12, third-year electrical engineering student Shaon Malik was found hanging in his hostel room. On April 20, final-year student of Ocean Engineering, Aniket Walker, was found dead in similar conditions. On May 4, third-year student Mohammad Asif Qamar was found hanging in his hostel room. Institute authorities said a 10-member fact-finding committee has already been formed to find the circumstances behind Mondal's death. 'As part of its continued efforts to support student well-being, the institute confirms the availability of dedicated mental health and counselling services around the clock. Furthermore, IIT Kharagpur is set to launch a new AI-driven mental wellness initiative, SETU, on July 25, to enhance proactive mental health support for students," a statement by the institute earlier said. Rummy-Playing Minister's Birthday Wish For Ajit Pawar Is 'Get Out Of Jail' Card?
Mumbai: Caught playing cards in the Maharashtra Assembly while it was in session, Agriculture Minister Manikrao Kokate appeared to be currying favour with Nationalist Congress Party boss and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, with a grand 'happy birthday' message Tuesday morning. 'Happy birthday, dada (as Mr Pawar is referred to within his party)' was written across 11 acres of agricultural land within the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation area. The message was etched across a field in Mr Kokate's Sinnar constituency. And, of course, also featured a large photograph of the birthday boy, i.e., Mr Pawar. Reports said eight people, led by artists Mangesh Nipanikar and Kshipra Mankar, and two tractors worked 10 hours a day for six days to prepare the outlandish message. Will the message have the effect Mr Kokate wants? That is unclear. What is clear is that Ajit Pawar is under pressure to sack his minister, with the opposition having targeted his NCP and the ruling alliance led by the Bharatiya Janata Party. Mr Pawar is also under pressure, sources told NDTV, from within that ruling alliance. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis - already under fire for failing to stem violent conduct by goons with political backing in the Marathi language row - criticised Mr Kokate's conduct. Sources told NDTV other members of the BJP and the third member of the Mahayuti bloc, Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena, have also criticised the Agriculture Minister's actions, and believe a "strong public message" is necessary for the ruling alliance to retain credibility with the public. The NCP has yet to decide on Mr Kokate's fate. Meanwhile, the card-playing minister has, unsurprisingly, played down the row, declaring this a "small issue" and defended himself by claiming he wasn't actually playing for money. "... why did (this issue) get stretched out so much? You can't play online rummy if your phone and bank account are not linked... I will give my details and everyone can check," he said, declaring also he would take legal action against those who said he played cards in the House. VIDEO | Maharashtra Minister Caught Playing Rummy In Assembly. His Defence Earlier Mr Kokate claimed he wasn't actually playing the game and that it "got downloaded on my phone". He said he had been trying to "skip it" and accused the opposition of targeting him with an incomplete clip, "I tried twice (but) didn't know how... but next second, I skipped it." The video of Mr Kokata playing (or trying to skip) the game, depending on which protestation is accepted, has been severely criticised by the opposition, with NCP patriarch Sharad Pawar's grandnephew, Rohit Pawar, leading the charge. In a post on X Mr Pawar said: "Will these misguided ministers and the government ever hear the desperate plea of farmers demanding crop insurance, loan waivers, and price support?" — Rohit Pawar (@RRPSpeaks) July 22, 2025 That Rohit Pawar is fronting the opposition attack on this issue is significant, given Ajit Pawar led rebel NCP MLAs out of the then-Sharad Pawar-ruled party in 2023 and delivered them to the BJP's camp. That strengthened the saffron party's control of the Maharashtra government. Rohit Pawar doubled down on his criticism this morning, slamming Mr Kokate for a "blatantly false" statement that the House was not in session when he was caught playing cards. "On the contrary, a discussion was underway on the extremely important issue of providing milch animals to tribal brethren who are far from the mainstream of development..." Mr Pawar also questioned Mr Kokate's other claim - that he was trying to "skip the game". "... tell me, which advertisement for a card game takes 42 seconds to skip?" he asked as he repeated the opposition's demand for the Agriculture Minister to stand down.

Appropriate action may be taken against Kokate: NCP
Appropriate action may be taken against Kokate: NCP CHHATRAPATI SAMBHAJINAGAR/KOLHAPUR: NCP's Maharashtra unit chief Sunil Tatkare indicated 'appropriate' action against party functionary and agriculture minister Manikrao Kokate after a video posted by NCP(SP)'s Rohit Pawar showed Kokate playing Junglee Rummy game on his phone during an assembly session. 'What happened was inappropriate. A minister holding a sensitive and important portfolio such as agriculture, must work responsibly for the welfare of farmers, especially during times of agrarian crisis. The party will take a suitable decision regarding Kokate,' he told reporters in Dharashiv and Solapur districts. Tatkare, considered close to party chief and deputy CM Ajit Pawar , said he believed Pawar had already spoken to Kokate. 'At times, his (Kokate) remarks on crop insurance and loan waivers were improper. Even earlier, Ajit dada (Pawar) reprimanded him. The explanation Kokate provided regarding the video is also incorrect,' he said. It has fueled speculation about Kokate's removal from the cabinet.
