New THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS Images Feature Galactus, Silver Surfer, and The Fantastic Four — GeekTyrant
Marvel has just dropped some new images for The Fantastic Four: First Steps thanks to Empire Magazine with a couple of striking new covers for its June issue, and they're loaded with character reveals. One cover spotlights Marvel's First Family with Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm—posing heroically with Silver Surfer soaring behind them. The second, a stylized piece from artist @_doaly, goes full cosmic, giving us a surreal new look at both the Silver Surfer and the looming presence of Galactus. I'm excited that Galactus is officially coming to the MCU, and that he's being played by the thunder-voiced Ralph Ineson. I'm excited to see how his story will play out over the course of the film As for Silver Surfer, she's portrayed by Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal, a femal version of the iconic Herald of Galactus that fans have mixed feeling about. Set in a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, The Fantastic Four: First Steps is being described as a bold stylistic shift for the MCU. 'Set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps introduces Marvel's First Family—Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm/Human Torch and Ben Grimm/The Thing—as they face their most daunting challenge yet.' Directed by Matt Shakman ( WandaVision ), the film stars Pedro Pascal as Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrachas The Thing. Paul Walter Hauser, John Malkovich, and Natasha Lyonne also appear in the film in undisclosed roles. Michael Giacchino is scoring the film, so expect the soundtrack to match the retro-future vibe. The film marks the start of Phase Six and hits theaters July 25, 2025.

Starring Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgard, Emily Watson and Jessie Buckley, it turns the mundane and dull, like a court hearing or reading of data, into vital, tense TV. How to watch 'Chernobyl' Now streaming on HBO Max If you like an aged post-apocalypse: 'Station Eleven' "Station Eleven" has no zombies or spores, but the dystopian limited series, based on the award-winning 2014 novel by Emily St. John Mandel, looks and feels a lot like "Us" in its depiction of a world decades after a deadly pandemic. In "Eleven," which aired on HBO in 2021-22, the culprit is more mundane and more terrifying than zombieism: A bird flu that takes out the vast majority of the population. Told in multiple timelines and with lyrical and literary flair, the series asks deep questions about humanity as it follows the few people not just able to survive, but thrive. Shakespeare is involved. How to watch 'Station Eleven' Now streaming on HBO Max If you just like great TV: 'Andor' OK, hear us out. You could watch "The Mandalorian," a gritty "Star Wars" series starring Pedro Pascal, the leading man of "Last of Us," even though it's middling as far as the Disney+ "Star Wars" TV shows go. Or you could watch a much better "Star Wars" series with an equally dashing leading man (Diego Luna) with character and plotting as complex and thoughtful as "Last of Us." Other than its color palette and Rotten Tomatoes score, there isn't a lot on the surface that ties Disney+'s "Andor" (2022-25) and "Last of Us." But look deeper and you see both are about how we choose what's worth fighting for, and what makes us willing to give up our lives. It's "Star Wars" for grownups in the way that "Last of Us" is zombies for grownups. How to watch 'Andor' Full series now streaming on Disney+ If you love the sci-fi elements: 'Silo' Amid its relationship dynamics, moral quandaries and religious allegories, "Last of Us" is also a really good piece of dystopian science fiction, and there is great pleasure in learning what makes its post-infection world tick. Apple TV+'s series "Silo," which premiered in 2023, is another sci-fi drama that thrives in world building and details, set in its own post-apocalypse where humanity is reduced to 10,000 or so people living in an underground silo. It's more of a puzzle-box mystery than "Last of Us," but it has the same kind of shocking deaths, head fakes and edge-of-your-seat-action. How to watch 'Silo' Seasons 1 and 2 now streaming on Apple TV+ If you love the horror elements: 'The Strain' Based on the book by producer and horror maestro Guillermo del Toro, "The Strain" aired on FX for four seasons of stomach-churning viral terror from 2014-17. Following doctors battling an outbreak of a disease that has quite a lot in common with vampirism, "Strain" never said no to a gross-out moment or jump scare. It featured vampires instead of zombies, but the epidemic at the center of the story certainly puts it in the same genre. How to watch 'The Strain' Full series streaming now on Hulu

Review: Star-filled ‘Eddington' — a satirical thriller in small town America
CANNES: The memory of the COVID-19 pandemic still lingers, the deaths and the economic destruction it caused still play on the mind. Ari Aster's 'Eddington,' which just played at the Cannes Film Festival in France, is a brutal look at what the virus did to humanity, the kind of misinformation we were fed and the losses, monetary and emotional, we all suffered. 'Eddington' is a fictional town in the US state of New Mexico and the movie opens as lockdown begins. In the Cannes title, the mayor of Eddington, Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal), and Sheriff Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix) are at loggerheads. Their bone of contention is the medical mask — Cross refuses to wear one thus setting a bad example, encouraging people to defy the rule. Cross also resents Garcia's support for the construction of a giant online server farm and decides to run against Garcia as an anti-lockdown candidate in the upcoming mayoral election. This forms the main plot, but interestingly it is the sub-plots that add pep and zing to the film. Cross's wife Louise (Emma Stone) suffers from hysteria and depression while Garcia's problematic teen son Eric (Matt Gomez Hidaka) is in love with Sarah (Amelia Hoeferie), who bills herself a warrior for social justice. Aster manages to grip us with all these diversions and distractions in what could have otherwise been a rather dull narrative. The satire on the sidelines is hilarious, and despite a serious plot that treats the town as a microcosm of America's problems — from police brutality to racism — the writer-director manages to keep the audience engaged until the finish line. The film could have done with tighter editing, though, and it isn't till the halfway mark that the plot begins to speed up with a segway into a farcical crime thriller.

The Last of Us HBO has just revealed its Emmy submission categories for The Last of Us, fresh off of its second season finale. The big news: Pedro Pascal will once again compete for Lead Actor in a Drama Series. The decision seems to be weighing his presence in the back half of the season, including a powerhouse performance in the penultimate episode, "The Price." Also confirmed was the obvious placement of Bella Ramsey in Lead Actress, truer than ever this season. Isabela Merced (who plays Dina), Young Mazino (Jesse), and Gabriel Luna (Tommy) will compete in their respective supporting categories. With the guest actor and guest actress categories, The Last of Us could potentially claim both prizes — just like the show did in 2023 with Nick Offerman and Storm Reid, adding to the show's tally of eight awards in all. This year's lineup of potential nominees is stacked, featuring Kaitlyn Dever (submitted for her pivotal, bloody episode "Through the Valley'), Catherine O'Hara (for season premiere 'Future Days), Jeffrey Wright (for his monologue-heavy "Day One"), Tony Dalton (as Joel's dad in "The Price"), and Joe Pantoliano (as the tragic Eugene, also in "The Price"). HBO submitted cocreators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann for writing separate episodes, with the former on "Through the Valley" and the latter on "The Price."
