Apple Pencil may soon let you draw in the air, new patent suggests

Apple appears to be working on a next-generation Apple Pencil that could redefine how we interact with digital devices, not just by touching screens, but by writing or sketching in the air or on any surface. According to a newly published patent filing spotted by Patently Apple, Apple is developing a stylus that may function independently of a screen, potentially allowing users to write, draw, and gesture in mid-air. The patent outlines the use of advanced motion-sensing technologies that could turn the Apple Pencil into a freeform input device. The document describes the use of optical flow sensors or laser speckle flow sensors, similar to those found in optical mice, to track the movement of the Pencil across a wide range of surfaces. These sensors are capable of detecting small shifts in light and shadow as the device moves, allowing for accurate motion capture. To achieve this, the Pencil would measure spatial and temporal changes in image brightness. This data would then be translated into real-time input on a connected screen such as an iPad, Mac, or iPhone. What makes this development particularly noteworthy is its potential beyond simple sketching. According to the patent, the Pencil could support air gestures for handwriting, drawing, or even manipulating 3D objects. This opens up possibilities for spatial computing and AR applications, especially in combination with devices like the Vision Pro headset. The Apple Pencil could also act as a universal spatial controller, enabling users to navigate files, control audio playback, or perform other system-level actions with mid-air gestures. The illustrations in the patent show the stylus being used alongside various Apple products, including the iPad, MacBook Pro, iPhone, and the Vision Pro. This indicates a broader ambition to make the next Apple Pencil a central part of Apple's hardware ecosystem. As always with patents, there's no guarantee that the product will be commercialised. However, the technology described could significantly expand how users interact with Apple devices, especially in AR environments or creative workflows that benefit from untethered input. If Apple brings this idea to life, the Apple Pencil could soon become more than just a stylus, it could be a controller for the spatial era.

Cosmo Interview: JT and Alex Consani On Their MAC Lip Combos

In 2025, it's not enough to just throw on a lipstick or lip gloss and call it a day anymore. Now, the real signature is your lip combo—the lip liner, lipstick, and gloss pairing that makes you feel like the most confident. Maybe it enhances your natural lips, or it plumps up your lip shape. With that, everyone's go-to lip combo is pretty unique to themselves. As a brand that's known for its lip products, MAC gets it—which is why they've tapped their famous friends JT and Alex Consani to box their lip combos so everyone can wear 'em too. Both the "OKAY" rapper and supermodel have been hella busy this summer, so it makes sense that they'd need a lip look on standby they can grab whenever they need. And now it's easy to recreate the look on yourself too. Of course, JT's vibe is Y2K Barbie doll-coded: deep-brown Lip Pencil in Chestnut, cool-toned pink MACximal Silky Matte Lipstick in Lipstick Snob, and O.G. Lip Glass in Clear to make your lips ultra shiny. She'd wear her lip combo everywhere, like on a first date, she says, but she also wore it performing at NYC Pride. "I have always been a MAC girl," JT tells Cosmo. But if you wanted to grab one product instead of JT's whole kit, her non-negotiable will always be lip liner (specifically, the Chestnut shade from MAC). "Since I was young, I would explore shades that matched my skin tone just out of love and curiosity, and Chestnut Lip Liner always made the most sense for me," she says. JT says that her outfit is always dependent on where she's headed, especially when it comes to a night out. But her lip combo is always at the base of every look. "A nice glam routine makes me feel pretty and confident," she says. What can we say? She's a glam girl, through and through. But before performing, she's still gotta get in the zone. "My before-stage ritual is to pray, take a deep breath, and be silly with my team," she says. Alex prefers an "effortless" look that's "still pulled together," she tells Cosmo. "Warm nudes work for my skin tone and feel easy," she says, hence why her lip combo contains Lip Pencil in Whirl, MACximal Silky Matte Lipstick in Warm Teddy, and Squirt Plumping Gloss Stick in Clear. Although the Gen-Z model's vibe is usually casual and classic model off-duty, she's not into the matte look. "I usually go for a gloss—it just makes everything look fresher." Her makeup routine isn't strict, though, especially when it comes to nights out (have you seen her TikTok? She's known to let loose when she's not on every designer's runway). "Makeup at night is where I have fun. Skin, a little structure, some highlight, and something sharp like a liner or lip—it's more about the vibe," she says. Overall, beauty feels simple to her right now. "It's just a way to feel good and try things. I don't feel pressure around it anymore. Some days I want to look done, some days I don't—I don't overthink it." Which is why she doesn't really care for trends that tell you if there's a right or wrong way to look. "I'm not interested in rules or anything overly curated. It's boring." Although, that didn't stop her from doing all the things in the past. "I got a blowout and did a full face for a date that lasted under an hour," she says. (Dating is hell for supermodels, too—you heard it here first.) "It didn't matter, though—I looked good." Where are JT and Alex wearing their lip combos right now? Both are busy working. "This summer is about building community within my fans—my Juvies," says JT, who is currently working on creative direction for her next project. "I'm also very excited about performing in London," she adds. And Alex is currently in Paris at Couture Week. Don't worry, though, she still has time to have fun, and she finally settled the "song of the summer" debate for us. "'Ran out' by JT—it just hits." Apple patent reveals stylus that draws in air, no screen needed

Apple might be rethinking how we use the Apple Pencil, and the future looks like it could involve drawing in thin air. A newly granted patent suggests that Apple is working on a stylus that doesn't need a screen or even a surface to function. Yes, you read that right. According to a report by Patently Apple, this next-gen Apple Pencil could let you write or sketch in the air or on pretty much any surface — like a wooden table or even your wall — and still track your input with idea is to use optical sensors inside the stylus that can track movement, tilt, and position in 3D space. These sensors include things like optical flow detectors — similar to what's used in your computer mouse — and more advanced laser-based tracking. That means even if the Pencil isn't touching a screen, it could still record your strokes by scanning how the light around it shifts as you move it. The patent even says this could work from a short distance, such as 10 centimetres above a quote from the patent sums it up well: 'The optical sensor(s) can be configured to measure displacement of internal components of a stylus,' allowing it to work even when not in direct contact with a surface. There's more. One version of the Apple Pencil described in the patent uses a trackball at the tip — think old-school computer mice — but instead of mechanical tracking, Apple is suggesting using internal optical sensors to detect the ball's motion. This setup could help avoid common issues like scratching or dirt build-up while still offering accurate input tracking. According to Apple, this design also improves signal-to-noise ratios and works across more types of surfaces, regardless of their texture or just drawing or writing, Apple's patent hints at combining this motion-sensing tech with other sensors, like force detectors, inertial measurement units, and even machine vision. In simple terms, that means the Apple Pencil could eventually support air gestures, better handwriting recognition, or even 3D object creation. These additions would make the Pencil a useful tool not just for iPads, but also for Apple's spatial computing devices like the Vision course, this is just a patent for now, so there's no guarantee it'll launch soon — or at all. But it does show that Apple is still experimenting with what more a stylus can do.- Ends

The USB-C Apple Pencil is on sale for $60 right now

The USB-C Apple Pencil is on sale via Woot for just $60 . This is a discount of 24 percent and a record low price, as it typically costs $79. This serves as the company's "budget" stylus and was originally released at the tail-end of 2023 . Despite being the most reasonably priced Apple Pencil , there's still plenty to like here. It's the only Pencil that's compatible with nearly every iPad in Apple's lineup. This includes the iPad Air (M2), iPad Pro (M4), iPad (10th gen) and iPad mini (6th gen). It even works with the older 12.9-inch iPad Pro (3rd-6th gen), 11-inch iPad Pro (1st-4th gen) and iPad Air (4th and 5th gen). Of course, it also integrates nicely with the recently-released iPad mini (7th gen.) This is a record low price. $60 at Woot The model offers tilt sensitivity and will attach to the side of iPads with magnetic holders. This is a great option for casual users who just want a stylus for casual writing or for navigating around a device. This is especially true for owners of the iPad (10th gen.) That tablet doesn't work with either of Apple's higher-end stylus options. However, there are some downgrades when compared to the Pencil Pro and the second-gen Pencil. The USB-C Apple Pencil can't handle pressure sensitivity, which limits options for illustrators. It also won't charge while magnetically attached. It charges via a USB-C cable. The accessory is slightly-shorter than the higher-end models and that could be an issue for those with large hands. Otherwise, this is a fine stylus for Apple devices.
