Uh oh, Cupra has put the brakes on its US launch
USA Spanish firm originally planned a US launch in 2030, but that has now been postponed Skip 1 photos in the image carousel and continue reading Are you an American who was looking forward to driving a medium-to-hot Spanish car? Well, we have some bad news for you, because Cupra has announced it is postponing its planned US launch. 'Given the ongoing challenges within the automotive industry and in light of evolving market dynamics, Cupra has strategically decided to postpone its planned entry into the US market, originally scheduled for 2030,' it said. Advertisement - Page continues below We know Cupra had been speaking to Penske about its US market launch, and that it originally planned on building a larger SUV in one of VW's North American factories. That of course might have made the tariff situation slightly easier for one of its cars, but even though a US-EU trade deal was announced this week that brings the tariffs on EU-built cars entering the US down from 27.5 to 15 per cent, Cupra has still put the brakes on all of its American plans. And yet, it doesn't sound as though this is a complete cancellation of the expansion. You might like 'We're not stopping, just postponing our US launch and will continue to monitor market developments in the coming years to determine the best timing and approach, aligned with the brand's long-term vision,' said Sven Schuwirth, executive VP for sales, marketing and aftersales. 'In the meantime, Cupra will build on the strong momentum it has achieved in existing key territories and will soon expand into new high-potential markets to broaden its global footprint.' Advertisement - Page continues below As part of the business update, Cupra was also keen to point out it has just had its 'best first half ever' with 167,600 vehicles delivered between January and June 2025. That's apparently a 33.4 per cent increase over the same period last year. The Formentor crossover (pictured above) remains its best-seller, accounting for just under a third of those sales. Volkswagen Delays Launching Cupra Brand in America
The Volkswagen Group had set its sights on bringing Cupra to the United States by the end of the decade. However, the plan announced about a year ago is no longer in place, as the Spanish automaker has 'strategically decided to postpone' its entry into the U.S. until after 2030. Why? It cites 'ongoing challenges within the automotive industry and in light of evolving market dynamics.' The vague statement doesn't mention tariffs , but the volatile situation in the U.S. likely played a role in the VW Group's decision to delay launching the Cupra brand. Originally, the company had intended to bring an electric Formentor to America, along with a larger electric SUV. But not all vehicles were supposed to be EVs. Former SEAT and Cupra CEO Wayne Griffiths told us late last year that hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and pure gas cars were also part of the plan. The strategy included opening 20 so-called Cupra City Garages with the help of Penske across the country, targeting the East and West Coasts as well as Sun Belt states. Rather than replicating its European lineup, Cupra aimed for a U.S.-specific portfolio, including a locally built vehicle. The models were expected to be larger and feature a distinct design language tailored to American tastes. The medium-term goal was to sell 100,000 units annually. Cupra emphasizes that it's only delaying the launch, not canceling it: 'We're not stopping, just postponing our U.S. launch and will continue to monitor market developments in the coming years to determine the best timing and approach, aligned with the brand's long-term vision,' said Sven Schuwirth, Executive Vice-President for Sales, Marketing and Aftersales at SEAT . Meanwhile, Cupra had its best first half of the year to date, delivering 167,600 units, up 33.4 percent compared to the same period last year. Since being spun off from SEAT in 2018, the brand has sold more than 900,000 vehicles and expects to reach the one-million milestone in the coming months. Cupra is now outselling SEAT, which suffered a 21.4 percent decline to 135,000 units, or 32,600 fewer cars than the younger brand. Cupra's announcement follows a similar decision by Renault, which had planned to bring its Alpine sub-brand to the U.S. by 2027 . During a recent earnings call, Renault CFO and interim CEO Duncan Minto attributed the delay to ongoing uncertainty in the American market: 'Considering what's going on in the U.S. at the moment, I don't think it's the right time to spend money.' Is it going to be one of weekends? As much as I'd love for the championship fight to get tighter, Palou has exceled here. He didn't run away and hide a year ago, but he was clearly the best car from the jump. This year, Palou has won four of the five natural-terrain road-course races — and in the one he didn't (Mid-Ohio), his small silly mistake cost him the win. We haven't gotten a true Alex Palou beatdown of a weekend since the spring, and it feels like we're due. How will Team Penske fare this weekend? I certainly don't expect a win. I think there's an off-chance we get a podium from either Scott McLaughlin or Will Power. I still think we could get a Penske win before the season ends, but not here. Chip Ganassi Racing has won each of the last three trips to the track, and if I'm making predictions, there's no reason to expect that to change unless something odd happens. The Rookie of the Year race couldn't be tighter. Who has the edge between Louis Foster and Robert Shwartzman? Foster has had a better track record both in qualifying performance and consistency, so in a tie with four races to go, I'll give a slight edge to the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing rookie, although I think this very much could be alive until the finale — at an oval, where Prema has gotten the bulk of their strong results this year.
