Poundland announces locations of 12 more store closures

Poundland has released a new list of stores that will be closing down before the end of September, making their total number a significant 52 - here's where they are Poundland has revealed the locations of another 12 shops earmarked for closure as part of its restructuring scheme, taking the total identified so far to 52. ‌ These form part of 68 stores scheduled to shut under a restructuring plan unveiled following Poundland's acquisition by investment firm Gordon Brothers from Pepco Group in June. Thirteen of these 68 have already closed, including 10 last Sunday, on August 10. ‌ Furthermore, Poundland has recently disclosed the locations of 15 stores closing on August 17, and 12 branches that will cease operations on August 24. ‌ The budget retailer has now pinpointed the following 12 set to shut after these. It comes as a man claimed 'I work at Tesco and there's one thing I hate doing for customers'. Of the latest group, 11 are confirmed to close on August 31, with the last to shut on September 14. This means Poundland has now revealed the locations of all but 16 of the 68 stores destined for closure. ‌ Poundland remains bound to leases on shut stores until its restructuring plan receives approval from the High Court and creditors - the hearing scheduled for August 26. The retailer has shared their anticipation for additional closures over time as their leases expire. Their expectation of their estate stands at a contraction from roughly 800 stores to 650-700. "When a store nearby closes, we understand how disappointing that is for customers, but nevertheless look forward to welcoming them to another Poundland store in the future," said Poundland retail director Darren MacDonald. He added that the affected staff had entered a formal consultation process which would explore any suitable alternative roles. The Grocer reported that the staff working at the latest confirmed stores were already briefed on their closure last week. ‌ Poundland's restructuring plan also features the drastic decision to remove frozen food from its stores, halting online trading and retiring its Perks loyalty app, which was only launched last year. The company's frozen and digital distribution centre in Darton, South Yorkshire, is set to close this year, with its national distribution centre at Springvale in Bilston, West Midlands, following suit in early 2026. Stores will be supplied from its remaining two distribution centres in Wigan and Harlow. ‌ Gordon Brothers has agreed to invest £80 million in the turnaround, having reportedly purchased Poundland for a mere £1. This follows a recent trading update from parent company Pepco Group revealed that between April 1 and the completion of the sale on June 12, Poundland's revenue fell by 10.3 percent to €347m. Like-for-like sales were down 7.1 percent during the same period - and simultaneously, the number of Poundland stores decreased by 19, from 818 to 799. Interestingly, three of the 68 stores had already shut their doors when Poundland announced its restructuring plan on 17 June. These were located in Swiss Cottage (closed April 20, 2024); Chiswick (closed May 28, 2025); and Southampton West Quay (closed June 9, 2025). DMV employers jump on pet benefits trend for fur baby parents

Washington companies are jumping on the "fur baby" trend and providing pet bennies to their employees. The big picture: As people continue to delay having children, more owners are considering their fuzzy offspring part of the fam. 94 million American households have a pet, per the American Pet Products Association, and they'll spend a projected $41.4 billion this year on vet care and pet products. State of play: Tysons-based Hilton offers pet insurance and, starting next month, employees will be able to access pet services through its concierge partnership with Wellthy, a spokesperson tells Axios. Think: help finding groomers, vets, boarding spots or doggie-friendly housing. Or, assistance setting up recurring food or prescription deliveries, or with understanding pet insurance claims. Companies with local footprints like Adobe, Blue Cross Blue Shield, John Hancock, Lyft and Workday partner with pet care group Airvet for free 24/7 virtual vet help and discounts on pet insurance, wellness plans, and backup care via resources like Rover, an Airvet spokesperson says. And at Google, workers can bring their furry pals (aka Dooglers) to the office and get discounts on pet insurance through the group Perks at Work, a spokesperson tells Axios. The intrigue: The number of D.C.-area clients Airvet works with jumped 267% between 2023 and 2024, per the spokesperson. What they're saying: Finding a company where pets are supported as part of an employee's family can be a deciding factor for some when choosing a gig, Airvet CEO Brandon Werber says. Many of Airvets' clients say their pet benefits are the highest used and fastest growing option they offer outside of regular health insurance, Werber tells Axios. While offering these types of benefits is a good way for companies to attract and retain the Gen Z and Millennial fur baby parents, says Werber, the appeal has been far more wide reaching than they expected. By the numbers: 32% of fur parents said having pet benefits would incentivize them to stay at their job, or to look for another that offers them, according to a 2021 survey led by Nationwide.

Best summer holiday money-saving deals, from kids meals to discount days out

Summer is well and truly underway, leaving many parents wondering how they'll keep the kids entertained on their already-stretched budgets. No matter how frugal you are, extra spending adds up quickly over the school holidays. From meals to activities, the break can put a serious dent in your wallet. But there's no need to panic. A number of UK businesses are offering discounts and deals to help families save money without cutting back on fun — and we've rounded up some of the best. So whether you're looking to plan a full weekend of adventure, or just trying to keep lunch costs down, this go-to guide has an array of options to ensure your summertime schedule doesn't break the bank. One of the simplest ways to save money this summer is to cut back on dining out. However, many places have promotions over the holidays, so you don't necessarily have to miss out. From July 21 to August 29 (excluding weekends), up to two children can eat free when one adult orders any main dish at Bill's. The offer runs all day, including the chain's breakfast, lunch and dinner menus, applying to all children under 10. You'll also be provided with story books, colouring in materials and stickers to keep the little ones entertained while you dine. Browse the Bill's menu and find your local branch here. With the purchase of an adults main meal, children up to 12 years old will receive a free three-course kids meal at Prezzo, every day from July 14 to September 5. All you need to do is sign up to receive a code via email, which you then show to the waiter at the end of your meal. Prezzo has 180 branches across the UK. Visit the website for more information. For a limited time, you can get a 30-day trial of the Kids Pass discount scheme for just £1, which gives you access to great discounts on activities, restaurants and events all across the UK. Take a look here for more information. Parents who sign up to Ask Italian's Perks rewards app can save this summer. All you need to do is claim a code, and you'll get your hands on two free kids meals with the purchase of an adult meal. Valid from Friday July 18 through to Sunday August 31, it makes for a budget-friendly holiday treat. For more information on the offer, or to find your nearest branch, check the Ask Italian website. Finding yourself in London or Edinburgh this summer? Head to Bread Street Kitchen, where children aged 10 and under eat free when accompanied by an adult ordering two courses from the a la carte menu. Kids can choose from mac and cheese, sausage and mash, meatball pasta and more, with no extra cost added to your bill. This deal is valid every day at its Liverpool, Stratford, Limehouse, Southwark, and St Paul's locations, or at the City, Heddon Street Kitchen, Battersea, Mayfair and Edinburgh branches on weekdays only. Visit the Bread Street Kitchen website for more information. If your little ones are pizza and pasta fans, you can get a free, three-course piccolo meal at Pizza Express this summer with every adult main. And given these dishes start at just £12.25, it's a major bargain. There are 339 Pizza Express restaurants across the UK. For more information on the offer or to find your local branch, take a look here. Travelling with the whole clan? During the school holidays, Heathrow Airport is running a Kids Eat Free promotion across a variety of its restaurants. With options in Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5 – including Leon, Shan Shui, Giraffe and Co-Pilots Bar & Kitchen – it's a handy way avoid blowing too much holiday cash before you've even stepped on the plane. The promotion is valid from July 18 to September 2, with one free children's meal for each purchased from the adult's menu priced at £14.95 or more. Visit the Heathrow website for more information. This popular London spot is offering children aged 8 and under a complimentary kids meal with the purchase of any main menu dish, alongside an activity sheet and crayons to keep young diners occupied. Available everyday from 12pm to 5pm, across Angus Steakhouse's five London locations: Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus, Mayfair, Paddington and Oxford Circus. You can find more information on the brand's website. Alongside restaurant deals, Metro money expert Rosie Murray-West has a few other tips to make eating out more economical. Buying a pack of ice creams from the supermarket rather than a van at the beach will save you more than you'd think, especially if you have more than one child. Or, if you need a caffeine hit while looking after the kids and happen to have a smart meter with Octopus Energy, you can get a code each week for a free tea or coffee at Caffe Nero or Greggs. Days out can add up fast, but summer adventures don't mean you have to spend a fortune. Take a look at our shortlist of the some of the best deals over the summer break.
